My vote is for The Lord of The Rings.

Actually, my favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy is the Back to the Future series. I also like the TV show Sliders.
I was into Harry Potter for a while, but I got tired of it after the third movie came out and lowered my expectations.
I also really liked Professor Snape until I realized that he had a million perverted fangirls who liked to write slash fiction about he and Harry, Ginny or Hermione in love.

I forgot to mention as to why I didn't like Lord of the Rings (The movie at least).
It's really drawn out, all three movies get boring after the first act and *grumble* Legolas Greenleaf.

Why the head-to-head? Just 'cause they've both got wizards in: it's a bit like comparing The Famous Five to The Hound of the Baskervilles just because they both mention a dog.
Harry Potter is great children's entertainment - lightweight with no real gravitas whatsoever and completely derivative; LOTR is imagination on a scale apart.

Harry Potter is fun to watch but kind of a bit light and fluffy at times, Lord of The Rings has great acting, special effects, and plus I like Gimli the dwarf!

I enjoyed both (even if the DVD makes you pay to see stuff they didn't show in the movie!)
However, I would rather live in Harry Potters world!
Did anyone ever ask, if he is a wizard, he'll never have to strive for money/riches he could just make them appear, so this film is more about his life rather than making people dream of wanting to be a wizard I guess?
Just like the old Bewitched question...Why did Darren have to work if his wife could have just created a castle to live in or money whenever they needed it??(I recall they used to answer that she was trying to live life as a mortal...but maybe her relatives could have created a pile of money in her account..or they could of created her account before she was born so she didn't know where it came from anyway!
I got all week to think of this stuff....zzzzzzzzz.

I agree, philbo. I chose the "both" option because I think they're both great in their own unique way. Both of these titles are not only very different but are also aimed at different audiences; Harry Potter generally being more of a children/family affair.

Eggzactly! I know HP is popular among adults as well as kids, but Tolkein's books were written for adults...and kids. As a kid I both read Tokein and had Tolkein read to me. Tokein wrote great epic adventures, the narrative of which could keep kids riveted. For older readership, there is the allegorical and metaphorical aspects of Tolkein. For instance, one may understand the ring as a metaphor for the nuclear arms race. Tolkein is also a lyric writer. The greatness of the narrative is not diminished for adults.
Both The Hobbit and LOTR have much to say about growing up, leaving the security of home, and confronting the world on its terms.
I think Peter Jackson did a spectacular job with the movies. He made as great a cinematic rendition as one could make of LOTR while keeping the story's integrity intact and making the movies commercially viable. However, cinema is a completely different medium from literature. A movie simply cannot do the same as a book, especially books as rich as Tolkein's. Not only are Hobbit/LOTR thick tomes unto themselves, you can also read volumes of background Tolkein wrote about Middle Earth. Tolkein made Middle Earth a more complete universe than the reader ever need know, that's why the whole thing functions so well.
Anyway, I'm not giving Rowlings thumbs down, but I don't think HP will have the same staying power as Tolkein.
:)

I definitely prefer Lord of the Rings. I can't stand Harry Potter. Also, the Lord of the Rings books are much better.

I agree ... LOTR DESTROYS HP!  Harry Potter's  cool too though of course :)  But Tolkien was the first modern fantasy book.  You read the Silmarillion?  Awesome book!  I like Feanor. ÂÂ
Not to be an a**, but Tolkien claimed to despise allegorically, so I doubt there's very little in any stories by him.
But there are definitely undertones about religion, growth, and responsibility.
I wanna be an Elf! :(

The Harry Potter books have some allegory in them too, I think. I saw an interview with J.K. Rowling where she said some of the villains in the Harry Potter books are supposed to symbolize Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government in Britain in the 1980s(I've never read any of the books or seen the movies, so I'm not sure about this).
