MusicMatch actually gave me fits...I could never get it to work the way I wanted it to...and burning an audio CD(for my personal portable CD player)took an eternity....Windows Media Player does the job much faster. Besides I like the choice of skins(the look of the player)and the visual effects which move in time with the music.

The coolest things about Windows Media Player 10
faster CD burning
playlists are easy to create and edit
auto error correction for CD burning
plays DVD movies with CLOSED CAPTIONING on-screen....my roommate is hard of hearing,my PC is also my DVD player,so if he wants to watch with me,I use the closed captioning.
Excellent sound quality for music playback AND DVD movies
and cool visualizations to watch when listening to music.

With me, it depends on what type of media I am playing.
Videos: WMP (unless it is an MOV, then Quicktime)
DVD: PowerDVD (2 computers use this, the other 2 use the ATI VIdeo Player)
CD Listening: Media Player
CD Ripping: Music Match (I like ther CDDB feature, and the 200+ kpbs sample rates)
Sound Playing (MID, WAV, MP3): WinAmp (Classic Mode)
Because I qork part-time as a DJ, I like WinAmp because of it's clean, easy to use interface. I love the features (count-down timer, Stop at end of current song, Fade Out from current song), which makes it very easy to use, and sounds professional.

I use "Media Player Classic" - I think it was released after MS MP7 came out, totally over the top and bloated, so this is a cut-down MP6-alike but copes with 99% of codecs as part of the main download; also came with a few useful media analysis and fixing programs.

I went for 'other'. I use Creative Mediasource Player mainly (the software I got with my MP3 player). Secondly, I use Windows Media Player 10.

None of 'em should - very occasionally a new codec comes out, but if your media player's playing the media OK, why update?

Wow at this thread. ;D
Back then, I used Windows Media Player. I did use Winamp for a bit. Then I moved onto iTunes in the late 2000s.
For videos, I used Windows Media Player. In the late 2000s and early 2010s I started using GOM player or VLC media player.
Come the 2010s, I more or less use my smartphone for music exclusively. In the early 2010s I used doubleTwist. In 2014, Google Play Music was the first streaming service to launch in Canada and that's what I used. In 2016 I switched over to Spotify for their cheaper student rates. They have a great Desktop client too and that's what I use as my music player.
For videos, I still use VLC. But I stream most my videos these days, through Netflix or YouTube or what have you.
A lot has changed in the past 10 years. :D

Yea VLC is probably the best as far as ready codecs go but I still had to get 2 Quicktime files and put them in my system directory in order to hear files encoded with QDM2 (A quicktime format)

I stopped listening on Winamp and occasionally will use Windows Media Player for listening to music.
