Everyone knows that we all could easily refer to any decade before this one, such as the '90s, the '80s, and so on. It's hard to think of a sufficient name for this decade, however. Some simply say the 2000's, but that's not making this decade unique, because that could mean the years 2000-2999. We all know how to SPELL the name of this decade, the '00s, but how can we say it?? The Aughts, the Zeroes, the Naughts?... What else? Cause in 10 years or so what are the radio dee jays gonna say? "We have the best music of the '90s, __'s, and Today!", plus for those who grew up in the 2000-2009 decade, when referring to it in the future we'll need a good name. Also accompanying it with another word like "Roaring 20s" for the 1920s, would help. We have no help on how to name this decade because in the year 1000, people could barely speak let alone have a name for the 1000-1009 decade, and in "Futurama", I haven't heard anything about 3000-3009.

I call it the 2K'S thanx to the Y2k scare. Y2K means "why 2000?" so the 2K's would be 2000-2009. This phrase is featured on a movie called "Head of State".

Maybe from 1999 it is.  There are also a few exceptions such as The Beastie Boys and the grunge comeback, but mostly I think we are in a totally new decade.  The '70s for example is our closest resemblance to the 2000's.  (The '70s were just a rip off from the 60s.)

I'm really nice to it, so it lets me call it Fred.  ;)

Seriously, it will be looked back on, historically, as "the turn of the millenium," "the first decade of the 21st century" and "the first decade of the millenium" just as the 00s of the 20th century are referenced with terms such as "turn of the century" or "the first decade of the 20th century."     

If you must have a nickname for it, I like:

Personally I believe this decade will simply be called the 00's or two-thousands. Now I know that two-thousands technically can refer to the whole century, but I think most people will use it to refer to this first decade of the century. For the 1900s, a lot of people refer to that decade as the nineteen hundreds, so it makes sense that two-thousands will refer to the 00s.

I call it the decade to forget.... lets really look at it. do we want to remember all this "bad" music.... I should say re-made music shouldn't I. Most of it in my opinion is just so rediculously stoopid... yes with TWO O's!!!!  Just my opinion though so please don't pounce on me.

Although we'll probably just refer to it as the 00's, our descendant's will probably refer to it as the turn of the Century or Millennium. That's really the only term I have heard refered to the first decade of the last century.

Other terms though could be either the "Millennial" or X decade- as in 10th decade or century

...I call it "The Turns," for turn of the century. The Turns are followed by the teens and twenties.

Our world ( North America) isn't safe anymore after 911,it's in our back yard,  so I'd call it "The insecurity decade", or alternatively, "Security check" decade.

I usually say "two thousands" if speaking about the decade (ie in the nineties and two thousands...), sure that technically refers to the whole millennium but most people understand if you just say "two thousands" you are referring to the 2000-2009 decade. Oh ohs is also an alternative that sounds stupid but that is what I call this board since we also say "oh one, oh two, etc." for the years of this decade. In the long run the 00s and probably the 10s as well will just be called "early 21st century" or something along those lines.

Given the rise of the Douchebag Phenomenon in the popular media this decade, we could call it the Douchebag Decade, or The Massengil Era.

"The Decade of Excess"

The name should be Oh Snap! or the Oh Snaps!
Oh Snap is the perfect saying because it could be used in almost any situation, big or small, good or bad. You can say it when your impressed or shocked.
Many things have happened in the decade that you could say OH SNAP! about. For example, Obama becoming president. America was surprised when he won because we have never had an African American president. So the Oh Snaps would be a suitable name for the decade.
Another good name could be the Say Whats! It would also fit in many situations.

This past decade could properly be called the TwentiOs.

I'm with Maggie. Her spelling of it doesn't work, but I like the Twenty-0's. I've been using that in conversation for a few years now, unless the subject is something with as much gravitas as 9/11. It would probably catch on nice and quick if we used it like, "Hey, what was that action movie from Twenty-0-Five?" Sound good?

I call them the aughts.  I think this should be the universally accepted name for the decade rather than something cutsie like the zippies or the naughties or the double-ohs.  The aughts just works.

Without getting into a decadeology discussion that sort of strikes a nerve with me when people say the 00's is similar to the 90's.

So then you should have quoted me as well right.

I said at the beginning there were similarities, I didn't get into decadeology because I wasn't really comparing, and I didn't agree completely with that person.

They play Sirius Pulse at the store I work at and they're officially using the tagline "two thousands and today" on that station. I think it sounds cool!  8)

I thought this is what most people do call it. Decades don't really have specific names, the 90s were called the 90s, the 80s the 80s, because it's short for 1980s and 1990s. I can see that saying the 00s would sound somewhat weird but it just seems like calling it the Two-thousands is the most common choice.

All the 20TH century's decades were something-ties.  We had the twenties, thirties, sixties etc.  The word 'aught' means a quantity of no importance or zero.  I refer to the first decade of the 21st century as the "aughties".  Maybe the next decade should be called the teenies.

We're in "the tens" now, the last decade could be called the noughties, aughts, aughties, or the zeroes.

The Roman Empire was founded literally over 2000 years ago. You think they did that with cave paintings???? Spoken language is estimated to be between 50,000 and 200,000 years old, I think by the year 1000 someone could have figured out what to call the decade 1000-1009. The reason we probably haven't heard of it is because it sucked. Last decade -> Naughties. This decade -> Onsies. Done.
