Wal-Mart Invades Teotihuacan

"I support the store, it will save me time and money," said Camilo Olivas, a father of four who works for the federal electricity commission in Teotihuacan.

He drives 10 minutes every two weeks to shop at a Wal-Mart store in another town to find low prices.

WOW! TEN whole minutes! That's how long it takes me to get to the shopping center over here! Ooh la la! Ten minutes! *end sarcasm*

Lol! I don't know. Some people . . .  ;D

Though I have heard cases over here of people getting in their cars to get groceries from a shop in the next street.  ;D

Wal-Mart is a mere 5 minutes from where I live but I'd rather drive the 15 minute route to King Soopers and keep supporting the little guy ;)

It takes me 60 minutes to get to the nearest Wal-Mart that isn't total trash.  Oh wait, they all are.

Sorry, but I go to Target.  Much cleaner, calmer, quieter environment.  I do hit Wal-Mart if I wanna get something for really cheap, but sometimes the friendlier shopping experience at Target is worth the extra $$$$$.

That's true!

But I like Target and Wal-Mart. I only go to WM for things that Target doesn't offer like, a good, cheap, thick, Motel 6 kinda shower curtain, the type that don't cling to you when you turn on the water -- WM's got 'em, Target don't.

Have you ever heard about those old people who drive all around the country in their RVs and camp out in Wal-Mart parking lots?
Iiiiit's Trrrue! Just when you thought you'd seen everything in the topsy-turvey Paul Harvey--Reader's Digest large print edition world, you find Americans who look forward all year to hitting the open road and shop at Wal-Marts from Maine to San Diego! Wal-Mart doesn't object, they love it!
I'm jealous of those people.  Let's face it, they'll never have a disappointing vacation!

No Walmarts in Australia (yet!).  I know what you're talking about though.  Australia is becoming generic.  It doesn't matter where you go - it's the same stores with the same merchandise and they don't care what is destroyed as long as they get their sites for new shopping centres.  We have a great corner store about 2 minutes walk from our house that has a great deli and fresh meat, fruit and vegetables.  I try to buy most of my fresh food there and try to stay away from the big stores.

I typically shop at Walmart, but then I spent 4 years in a tiny town where the only place open 24/7 was Walmart and the nearest Target was about and hour away. Course, an Albertson opened during my last year there, so I split time between them since the Albertsons was closer and I was sans wheels at the time. Walmart covers much of my needs, but I'm still one to hit the other stores as they have a tendency to carry things Walmart doesn't...

We don't have a Target (pronouced "tar-jay"-you know, that French place  ;)) around here-at least not yet. They are talking about it. We do have K-Mart, Big Lots (that I have yet to go to even though one of my best friends works there) and we USED to have Ames before they all closed.  :\'(  Across the street from us is a store called Ben Franklin. It is not as big as these others but we can usually find things that we need. It is very convient (and no we don't drive across the street to get to it-we actually use our two feet, shocking as it may seem.)

Hehehehe. That's what we call it too.

I did shop at Wal-Fart a couple of weeks ago because they had the baby stuff I needed.  The rest of the time I don't do much shopping. ;D

According to my English professor, Dr. Vernon Hyles, the Walton family is the largest donor of funds to the GOP. This is all the more reason to hate the evil Wal-Mart in my opinion. Alas, where I live, there aren't any other places to shop, they were all put out of business.

He is quite right. According to followyourmoney.com, Walmart gave over $3 million dollars to the Republicans. They gave the Democrats a little over $700,000.

Have you heard about the "dead peasants policies".  Seems Wal Mart was insuring all of its
employees, without their knowledge.  The rationale was that if they died the wanted to recoup the
cost of training them.  No one knew about it until a womans husband died, and she got all kinds
of papers after his death and there was notification of a policy in his name paid to WalMart.  She
had a lawyer investigate,  a memo in the Wal Mart system referred to the policy as the "dead
peasants policy".  They have been told to stop.

That is terrible! I knew they treated their employees like scum and underpaid them, but this is f*cking ridiculous! >:(

Actually, I like American Department stores. Most people hate their town or city being Americanized. But when you think about it, shopping at Target, Wal-Mart, Best-Buy, Cirquit City (not in Canada yet), and eating at Taco Bell (and the others) really isn't that bad.

The only thing I don't like is when they buy out other small 'better' stores.  >:(

P.S. I don't like Wal-Mart, but I shop there occasionally.  :(

Is the Aussie government doing anything to keep them OUT?  Once they get in, they'll undercut everybody else's prices and drive your independent stores out of business.  Even regional chains get crushed by Mal-Wart.
The pay is terrible, they treat the workers miserably, and all the profits get sucked right out of the community and back to Bentonville, Arkansas!

Ha ha ha!  The Ben Franklin, what a campy place!  There's one of those near where my dad and stepmom live, in Wolfeboro, NH.  The reason the place survives in Wolfeboro is even Wal-Mart is a good 15 miles up the road.  I suppose it might be similar in your area of VT.
