At one time, "November Spawned A Monster" by Morrissey pretty much summed up everything (although my birthday is in December), but then I found love and got married. :) It still is one of my favourite songs, and it still does say a lot about my life. At the present time, the first song that comes to mind that would compare to my life is "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" by The Smiths because of its happy ending ("I've seen this happen in other people's lives, and now it's happening in mine"). I could probably name several songs that could compare to my life, though, and most of them would most likely be by The Smiths! :)

I was going to ask you what you thought of November Spawned a Monster.  It's one of Morrissey's best, both lyrically and musically.
There are sooo many Smiths song that ring true for me.  The gay thing never applied to me, although most of the issues Morrissey expresses secondary to the gay thing did!
There are fewer Morrissey solo songs that do or did apply as dearly, but some of them are:
Break Up the Family
I Don't Mind if You Forget Me
The Ordinary Boys
Dial-a-Cliche
Late Night Maudlin Street (somewhat, not entirely)
King Leer
I'm the End of the Family Line
Interesting Drug
Ouija Board, Ouija Board
Disappointed
Michael's Bones
Glamorous Glue
You're Going to Need Someone on Your Side
We'll Let You Know
Seasick, Yet Still Docked
I'd Love To
America is Not the World
I Have Forgiven Jesus
How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel
Hmmm...rather a lot, really.
I've also lived through every Joy Division song, at least twice!  Not so much any more, fortunately!

Not sure exactly, but around junior year of high school I adopted "Struggling Man" by Jimmy Cliff as my anthem for those many nights I'm up late doing homework
Struggling man has got to move
Struggling man no time to lose
I'm a struggling man
And I've got to move on
At about the same time and for the same situation, I took "Who Needs Sleep" by Barenaked Ladies
Who needs sleep
Well you're never gonna get it
Who needs sleep
Tell me what's that for
And my usual attempted outlook on life can be described by the Kate Bush sampling "Something Good" by Utah Saints... "I just know that something good is gonna happen"
Everything you never wanted to know about me :)

Just about any song by the Goo Goo Dolls. I really identify with their stuff. Any one of either "Naked", "Broadway" or "Slide" could be about me.
Also, with all the guilt and shame I feel about my life, I kind of think that "It's a Sin" by the Pet Shop Boys is about me whenever I hear it.

I was actually going to mention that Kate Bush song..."Cloudbusting", "Running Up That Hill", and "Hounds of Love" apply to my life alot. Of Velvet Underground/Lou Reed songs, "Candy Says", "Walk on the Wild Side", and "New Age" apply to me alot.
"Cloudbusting"
I still dream of Orgonon.
I wake up crying.
You're making rain,
And you're just in reach,
When you and sleep escape me.
You're like my yo-yo
That glowed in the dark.
What made it special
Made it dangerous,
So I bury it
And forget.
But every time it rains,
You're here in my head,
Like the sun coming out--
Ooh, I just know that something good is going to happen.
And I don't know when,
But just saying it could even make it happen.
On top of the world,
Looking over the edge,
You could see them coming.
You looked too small
In their big, black car,
To be a threat to the men in power.
I hid my yo-yo
In the garden.
I can't hide you
From the government.
Oh, God, Daddy--
I won't forget,
'Cause every time it rains,
You're here in my head,
Like the sun coming out--
Ooh, I just know that something good is going to happen.
And I don't know when,
But just saying it could even make it happen.
The sun's coming out.
Your son's coming out.
could, I'd be running up that hill.
If I only could, I'd be running up that hill."
It doesn't hurt me.
Do you want to feel how it feels?
Do you want to know that it doesn't hurt me?
Do you want to hear about the deal that I'm making?
You, it's you and me.
And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh...
You don't want to hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.
Unaware I'm tearing you asunder.
Ooh, there is thunder in our hearts.
Is there so much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?
You, it's you and me.
It's you and me won't be unhappy.
And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building,
Say, if I only could, oh...
"Running Up That Hill"
You,
It's you and me,
It's you and me won't be unhappy.
"C'mon, baby, c'mon darling,
Let me steal this moment from you now.
C'mon, angel, c'mon, c'mon, darling,
Let's exchange the experience, oh..."
And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.
And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.
And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.
If I only could
Be running up that hill
With no problems...
"If I only could, I'd be running up that hill.
If I only could, I'd be running up that hill."
"Hounds of Love"
"It's in the trees!
It's coming!"
When I was a child:
Running in the night,
Afraid of what might be
Hiding in the dark,
Hiding in the street,
And of what was following me...
Now hounds of love are hunting.
I've always been a coward,
And I don't know what's good for me.
Here I go!
It's coming for me through the trees.
Help me, someone!
Help me, please!
Take my shoes off,
And throw them in the lake,
And I'll be
Two steps on the water.
I found a fox
Caught by dogs.
He let me take him in my hands.
His little heart,
It beats so fast,
And I'm ashamed of running away
From nothing real--
I just can't deal with this,
But I'm still afraid to be there,
Among your hounds of love,
And feel your arms surround me.
I've always been a coward,
And never know what's good for me.
Oh, here I go!
Don't let me go!
Hold me down!
It's coming for me through the trees.
Help me, darling,
Help me, please!
Take my shoes off
And throw them in the lake,
And I'll be
Two steps on the water.
I don't know what's good for me.
I don't know what's good for me.
I need your love love love love love, yeah!
Your love!
Take your shoes off
And throw them in the lake!
Do you know what I really need?
Do you know what I really need?
I need love love love love love, yeah!

Back when I was just 17
I thought that I knew everything
I could make it in this scene
To be a rising star that only gleamed
When all the answers disagreed
With the questions held for me
I was legal now at 21
I knew the way the world should run
My God, just look what I had done
Simply drunk and having fun
Looked for friends but I found none
All alone at 21
The fire burns on
and all that drives me on
till all is gone except
the simple plans of mice and men
At 25 I was suprised
That I was even half alive
somehow I managed to survive
I found my bodys' doing time
In my back a hundred knives
All from my friends at 25
And now as Gabriel sounds my warning bell
I'd buy your life if you would sell
and you would too if less compelled
So live your life and live it well
Theres not much left of me to tell
I just got back up each time I fell
The fire burns on
and all that drives me on
till all is gone except
the simple plans of mice and men

Dave touches on numerous points here.
First of all, the excesses of his youth led him to alienate himself from his friends. It isn't hard to do this. We have all, at some point, gone overboard and alienated ourselves. I know there are people who were once very dear to me that I no longer have any sort of relationship with. Now, wether this alienation is though alcohol like Dave, or through other things is of no consequence. Yes it will happen, but this is no reason to be negative 100% of the time, things improve.
He goes on to say "live your life and live it well". Yes of course things will go wrong, there is nothing anybody can do about that, but at the same time, we only have a limited amount of time to do what we want to do.
I'm a very negative person a lot of the time, it's a great fault in me, however..
Life IS meaningless though.
Any meaning to it is in the human psyche..
.. just won't cut it. If you are willing to accept defeat that easily then I feel I should give you a stern talking to.
Of course it has meaning, don't be so blind.
When your Uncle injured his back, you were around to help out, thus, to him you are useful, therefor you have a meaning.
Likewise, I on many ocassions have thought of myself as useless, however, in others time's of need I have been there, thus, my life has a meaning.
Stop looking for the big answer and focus on the small answer's that make sense.

What if you're causing your self grief (like I often do)?
Then the chorus of "Just" by Radiohead is about you:

"The Balance", by The Moody Blues:
After he had journeyed
And his feet were sore
And he was tired
He came upon an orange grove
And he rested
And he lay in the cool
And while he rested, he took to himself an orange and tasted it
And it was good
And he felt the earth to his spine
And he asked
And he saw the tree above him
And the stars
And the veins in the leaf
And the light
And the balance
And he saw
Magnificent perfection
Whereon he thought of himself in balance
And he knew he was
Just open your eyes
And realize, the way it

Unwell by Matchbox 20
All day staring at the ceiling
Making friends with shadows on my wall
All night hearing voices telling me
That I should get some sleep
Because tomorrow might be good for something
Hold on
Feeling like I'm headed for a breakdown
And I don't know why
But I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
A different side of me
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired
I know right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be...me
I'm talking to myself in public
Dodging glances on the train
And I know, I know they've all been talking about me
I can hear them whisper
And it makes me think there must be something wrong with me
Out of all the hours thinking
Somehow I've lost my mind
But I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
A different side of me
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired
I know right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be
I've been talking in my sleep
Pretty soon they'll come to get me
Yeah, they're taking me away

Life IS meaningless though.
Went through a depressive phase in college. Been a decade or two since then - and to this day, the most insightful thing I've ever heard in my life was from a guy from the pre-Internet era. He was an author, and because he couldn't find a publisher, he sold his books on the street. He said "It's just pain. It won't kill you."
Since then (in the middle of a stupid relationship) - I've learned to walk away from stupid relationships. The Beatles' "Nowhere Man" has it made. Speaking of have it made, I've since come to have made a few honest bucks in a free market. I've gotten cynical enough to have walked away from one or two less-stupid relationships. Made a few bucks on government pork and on the war. Made a few bucks on my job.
Songs, then!
A Split Second: "Rigor Mortis":
"Turning away from the wasted hours / Turning away from the wasted years..."
A Split Second: "Bend My Body Armor":
"No more love and no more hate / No more feelings, never again!"
Leonard Cohen: "The Future":
"Give me back the Berlin Wall / Give me Stalin and St. Paul / I've seen the future brother / It is murder."
Abba: "The Visitors" (1978)
(Listen to the track yourself. Despite the fact that we won the Cold war, someone you know will end up going out like that. I'm just glad I've drunk enough good booze in my lifetime that I don't care if I'm one of 'em. And that the Visitors are as likely to *hire* me as they are to otherwise dispose of me, since I'm basically on Their side anyways ;)

In the past, the song that would have compared to my life is Pink's FAMILY PORTRAIT...being that I came from a pretty dysfunctional family where I had to take care of my mother for a year, and I was only eight years old at the time.
But now I'd have to say My Life by Billy Joel because I'm living my life the way I want to live it and I do indeed 'belong'.

I'd have to choose "At Seventeen" by Janis Ian. Always felt like the ugly duckling growing up - still even sometimes now.
