Subject: Kids, Car Noise And Society Today...Better or Worse?
Written By: RockandRollFan on 06/04/04 at 8:37 pm
Most kids today (Not mine) walk around with what looks like a "Load" in thier pants....Car stereo's make me first think of an approaching thunder-storm....society today SUCKS compared to the 70's when I was fortunate enough to be a kid that didn't have to worry about pissing some moron off by them mistaking my wave to a friend as "Flashing" a gang sign. I may not be long for this earth because everytime I see one of those automobiles with the teeny-tiny tires that stick out I start to laugh....especially the ones driving the SUV's and Trucks...they look like little Tonka Toys ;D ::) As for respect....I KNOW that a parent or parents must EARN a childs respect through the way they choose to raise them...with values...the basics, ect. It's just my opinion that that is not happening anymore for the most part. Oh, and PLEASE somebody teach thier children how to "Talk" :D

Hip-hop culture has been a total negative. It's disgusting. Young people today, male or female, any race, are a bunch of thuggish airheads. Young people smart enough to post on "inthe00s" are, of course, the exception!
Thumping stereo woofers have nothing to do with music, and everything to do with "look at me, I'm a baaaad mutha hubbard!" If you liked music...well, if you liked music, you wou would be listening somthing other than RAP...if you liked MUSIC, you wouldn't drown out everything with those woofers.

That's why my wife and I retired to a quiet, one stop light Amish agri rural area in the mid-west where folks still smile and say goodmorning, worship God, are selfsufficient and, if need be, will use their legally owned guns and fight to the death to protect their families, homes and land. God Bless America!

Most everyone my age thinks it's "cool" to drive fast.. yep.. it's also cool getting into car accidents too. Am I seriously the only 15-year old who realizes that there are consequences to things? My class is full of a bunch of people who are careless, drink, and do stupid things. I hate to sound better than anyone else, but I feel sometimes like I am the only person with common sense.
I'm sorry the youth of today is disgusting RNR.. I'm trying to straighten them out the best I can. :D

You probably actually had parents who cared. Most of the kids these days...man, when I was a teacher, I wanted to slap the parents for making me babysit their little hooligans :P

I don't know, I can only guess, but you might have more self-confidence than your peers. The ones drinking and driving and acting all "cool" think they've got something to prove. They don't realize older people just see them as immature.
I was just being sarcastic. I live in a college town and get fed up with the mobs of stupidity that take over the place on the weekends. Nice and quiet now, they're all gone for the summer.

The Amish are true conservatives. They don't go out and buy every gadget and every new thing the corporations push. The ask whether it will help or hinder their way of life. That's why you might see a funny sight like an Amish farmer talking on a cell phone while he drives his team of horses.
The Amish, being human like the rest of us, have another side to them. You can be sure of that. We might not hear or see their social pathologies, but they are there. I'm not knocking the Amish, I'm just careful about idealism.

See, this is what drives me nuts. As if driving fast and listening to loud music became fashionable only in the last five years. This is NOT a generational issue. No, when the Baby Boomers were teenagers, they never drove GTOs, Z-28's, Road Runners, or Mustang CobraJet 429's, and they never cranked up Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin really loud, and they never smoked pot or drank Falstaff. No, this whole phenomenon of teenage irresponsibilty only started recently. D*mn kids anyway!

I used to have a customized 1969 Mustang (Yes it's the only FORD I ever had good luck with) And I rocked out to Zeppelin and all that but...back in the day the city had a noise ordinance which they still do but never enforce anymore. We all used to cruise the main drag on Friday and Saturday nights...then we'd go home. Later when I had my own family (80's) it started to get worse (Noise)...with the idiots at these car stereo places getting kids to come blow thier dough on a really LOUD sytem. I never drove around neighborhoods at all hours of the day or night rattling windows with such a loud BOOM that you'd think the Atom bomb had just blown up in your front yard. My only solace comes from the fact that I had a couple of neighbors who were like this for the past 10 years or so and now that they are well into thier 20's they have trouble hearing ;D

I think every generation has complained about "Kids"...it's just that too me, THIS one for the past 15 years or so, is the Worst by far! Isn't it strange how that time frame is when rap "Music" started to gain popularity in some circles ::)

The kids of today are much worse than any in history, but it's also the parents fault for letting this generation walk all over them. Also the crappy tv and "music" adds to the mix.

There's no place to vote for other, which would be my vote, as in "Give the kids a freakin' break." Every generation is the "worst in history." You know why kids today like rap so much? Because Baby Boomers can't stand it. And Baby Boomers listened to groups and artists like Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and Janis Joplin (and earlier, the Beatles and Elvis Presley), which drove their parents, the WWII generation, completely up the wall. And the WWII generation loved Frank Sinatra, whom THEIR parents (the WWI generation) thought was a degenerate freak. And of course the WWI generation was into Al Jolson and Rudy Vallee, and THEIR parents thought the world was going to hell in a handbasket because their kids were necking in the back of those new-fangled automobiles. Since the WWI generation was the first generation to grow up with recorded music, what THEIR parents listened to is probably lost to antiquity (Sousa marches is my best guess, and who knows how many of THEM snuck off into the woods and made out to the sounds of "Stars And Stripes Forever"). My point is that kids listening to music because in part, it drives their parents nuts, is part of a continuous, unending cycle that for all I know probably goes back before the beginning of American history, through ancestral Europe, and even through ancient Rome and Greece, all the way back to the caveman days where some cavekid invented a new way to bang on the bongos which drove his cavemom and cavedad out of their minds.

There's something to that, yes, but since the 1960s, pop culture has become demonstrably more crass and pornographic. I'm sorry, comparing the Charleston to "Freak Dancing" is like comparing a housecat to a Bengal tiger!

I seem to remember there were always partying kids who'd crank it up as loud as it could go, until the cops made 'em knock it off.
The whole Hip-Hop attitude says, "I'm deafening you with my woofers because of what your ancestors did to my ancestors, even if they didn't." Ear-splitting decibels are now a political statement.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic, but I've encountered the attitude, like they're entitled to hate me personally for something. I've had also had certain people on campus say things to that affect right to my face. I'm a liberal, but I'm not PC. The PC thing to do is condescend to them, and say they're right.

I think it's harder for the cops to make a case if they're moving, if they're parked and people complain, then the cops can interfere.
I remember one time there was some guy waiting for his girlfriend, he had his system just blasting! I went out and motioned for him to turn it down, but he just gave me the finger, and turned it UP! That's the kind of attitude I'm talking about.

I don't know, MaxwellSmart. A friend of mine had a loud muffler (NOT by choice) back in the late 70's, he got a ticket and had it fixed. They also used to have a cop here who was a "Noise Control" cop...I guess the budget wasn't enough to afford them that luxery....so I guess I'll have to just deal with the crap :P

Yeah, but that's driving a car with defective equipment, cops love to hassle you abou that stuff! Now, if you drove through certain communities with those sub-woofers thumping, such as Greenwich,CT., or Piedmont, CA, you'd certainly get pulled over and escorted to city limits!

Yeah I can't stand somebody's subwoofer blasting music. Its like can't you hear the music without installing an aftermarket sound system? As long as you can hear the music I don't think you need an aftermarket sound system. If I want to turn up my radio in my car I do it but I don't have an aftermarket sound system and I have my windows closed. I mean further to talk about somebody blasting music in their car I mean as long as they are moving past me on a highway I really don't care. I remember one time I was sitting at a light a few years ago and this guy in his Toyota 4 Runner was blasting music(I had to cover my ears, it was just that loud.) If they are doing it on private property or around a neighborhood then there is a problem. As for the baggy pants I wear them but I'm 24 years old so I should probably get rid of them and buy some pants that fit me.
As for the generational gap there is always that gap. I remember my mom saying you generation is the worst like 6-7 years ago. Every time is like that(the new generation of young people is always being precived as worse than generations of people before them.) To talk more about the generational gap I feel like I'm an old fogie because of this reality TV and bling-bling rap music. When I was going to high school it was dance music and alternative rock that dominated the music scence and good television.

I have no problem with aftermarket soundsystems, most manufacturer's models are C-R-A-P! It's quite another thing to shake the concrete when you drive by!

i really don't care...people driving with loud stereos don't bother me...i mean, you only hear it for about ten seconds when they're driving down the road. the only time some one actually bothers me on the road is when they're tailgating me or pull out in front of me without stopping/signalling.
i might be the only sixteen year old who has a concept of "speed limit"...and i can honestly say that i was going 40mph EXACTLY when that cop was following me. ;D

You tell them AL-B. The noise level is loud, but it sounded the same way to my parents who
couldn't understand why I liked Hendrix and I cranked it! You don't like that it is louder, but is
also what you don't want to here and that is what makes it grate. If it was that loud and some-
thing you liked it wouldn't seem so bad. Things are not better, or worse, just different. There
have always been good, and pains in the a$$, The biggest change I have seen is when I was
a kid if I did something and someone went to my parents and told them, they wanted to know
what the story was, and I would get in trouble. Now, if you go to a parent and tell them that
there kid is doing something they shouldn't they don't jump on the kid, they jump on the person
and tell them to mind their own business. Ninety nine percent of the time the problem isn't the kid,
it's the adults around them.

I'm not going to get into a long winded post. I don't care what kids do nowadays. Their music doesn't bother me since I listen to it as well. Their clothes don't bother me since I used to dress in what you would call "gangsta" attire. And most of the kids I know DO respect their elders or else they get the cr*p kicked out of them by their mothers, including the "thugs". ::)
So let's see here: so-called disrespectful kids who listen to music and wear clothes that their elders hate. Sounds like every generation to me.

I went to my kid's high school the other day (I'm not that old) anyway, we were standing in the lunch line, and she said, "Dad, look at that guy's bling." He was wearing a thick (probably fake) silver chain necklace with a big brown plastic clock as a pendant. Probably ripped it off the school wall somewhere. My kid and I thought it was funny ;D

Nope....not kidding. There's so much more violence and less morality everywhere today. There have been a lot more kids murdered by kids around here than I EVER remember >:( It's also really fun to TRY and sleep in my own home and have a car stereo "Thunderstorm" constantly "Roll" up and down the street....FIVE blocks away :P And lest we forget that you'd better NOT wave to your friend for fear of being shot for "Flashing" gang signs ::)

I thought the clock thing went out of style in 1988! Maybe it's hip-hop retro...
I remember when kids were ripping off Mercedes-Benz hood ornaments. All the rich guys had to store the little emblems in their glove compartments.
BTW, I hate the term "bling," or "bling bling." It's not just because of my age. I never used the dumb slang hip in the '80s either.

Speaking as a fifteen-year old here.
I think you guys are stereo-typing teenagers today a wee bit. Well, maybe more than a wee bit, but yeah. Hey, I don't really like contemporary music today as much as the next person (only modern bands would have to be Foo Fighters/RHCP), so I do know what you're talking about when you vent about how bad music is today- but you know, a lot of teens are laughing with you. There are some of us who understand how stupid our generation is being too- I don't care, do whatever you want, live and let live, but not all of us are bling blinging trash talkers/emo "I live in the suburbs but LIFE IS NOT FAIR" people/heavy metal/rockers that try so hard to non-conform but are being huge conformists at the same time.
You know, some of us think :D. I think you guys are kind of under-estimating a lot of teens- I mean, yeah, I'd say about 85% of them are dumb- but hey, they're young. But yeah, there's still a percentage of teenagers out there that have a better grasp on life than a lot of adults, and I think it's a shame that they aren't heard- I see it in my AP Euro History class, our teacher's great, she lets us have great political/philosiphocal/cultural discussions all of the time. I mean, we're still fifteen and have a very small amount of life experience, but you know, just don't think that every teenager you meet isn't going to have a voice worth hearing just because they might listen to crappy music at loud volumes X).
Now, I'm gonna rant about my generation a little too. It's amazing how apathetic and completely ignorant a lot of kids are about their country and the world. I see so many people going off "Oh, Bush SUCKS!", but they probably have no idea why- they're just saying that because they've seen him ridiculed on TV. Hey, I don't like Bush, but I have a reason why. Do YOU? It f*cking pisses me off- think for yourself!
And, this has nothing to do with anything, but WTF I live in South Florida and I just heard that there's a new tropical storm in the Caribbean. I'm moving to Finland to become a moose, this SUCKS.
In summary, I'm not saying that you guys ARE underestimating anyone, just that it's easy to... so make sure you don't? :D

I hear ya, but again, these issues to don't go away with age. If people could think for themselves, we wouldn't have either of the two major Presidential candidates we've got now, I'll tell you that much!
BTW, Yesterday was our state primary day. I went to the polls, I was the only one at my precinct polling place, other than the poll volunteers and a guy doing yard work outside. On the other hand, there was only one seat contested on my town ballot, for Town Councillor. The prediction for the entire state was a less than 10% turnout of voters!

My 15 year old just told me last night that the 16 year old guy who sits next to her in class keeps asking her out. He has a car and is on the football team, writes great creative writing, etc. This is her first experience with someone showing her attention. My kids are only with me a couple weekends per month (divorce visitation BS, and my ex is not very liberal in letting the kids be with me unless it's my time). Anyway, my kid is probably wanting a Father figure more in her life and is reaching out for whoever shows her attention. I told her I would take them wherever they wanted to go, she said NO. I said no going in his car, too dangerous, you're too young, etc. Race card issue as well, anyone have advice, Don Carlos, where are you?

From a female point of view, hold fast and don't let her snow you. My dad did and that's the only reason
I didn't get into trouble. If I had gone out on a car date at 15 I would have got into trouble. If she is reaching
out for more attention, try and give her more. See if you can call her during the week, just to say hi how's it
going. Since you offered to drive her on her dates I am assuming you live close enough to show up at
parent teacher nights, or, if she has after school activities try to show up. There are alot of things your ex
cannot control. None of this is easy, and she will, I repeat will at some point tell you she hates you. Don't
you believe it. I said it to mine, and most of my friends said it at one time or another. It wasn't true, just another
button to push to see if it worked. Don't let it. Plus, if you want help on raising a young woman, it is better to ask
someone who has been there, there are alot of us around. ;)

Well, you would be happy to hear my music if you think that kids today only listen to rap. ;) Because I blast my woofers with my taste of music. 8)

Sorry. I must be lucky where I live. Nearly all of the kids that wander around here I know them and their parents. Most of them are friends with my kids. They're all fantastic kids - although far from perfect - they will grow up and be decent human beings. When I think back I was a revolting teenager - it's a wonder my parents didn't disown me. But I did grow up and I think I'm an okay adult.

I remember going round my parents house for a barbecue just after graduating with my Bachelors degree. My mum's neighbour said how pleased and proud she was for me and my parents that I'd done it. She then went on to say how much worry I'd caused my parents when I was a teenager, the sleepless nights my mum had, etc. and "who'd have thought, looking at you then, you would turn out like this". So I guess many 'crappy' teenagers turn out alright in the end.

Its a crude generalisation to say that all tennagers are like this, when I was in school I was one of the 'uncool' kids but I had friends who were considered by a lot of the thuggish kids to be the same but they were probably the greatest friends I could have because they understood.
but its not the teen generation at all it is a number of teenagers who feel that to be cool they have to do things and this is all due to TV & MUSIC etc, and the pressure on young people to make the grade.
I don't pretend to be cool.
I never would want to be that way, but saying things like all teens are ruining the way the world used to be is unfair.I know plenty of people who have tried so hard not to succumb to peer pressure and to do the right thing no matter what people think of them.
I'm not 'trendy' and I get predudiced because of that it used to be racism, sexuality and now it has become so basic that its not who you are, where you're from or who you decide to date but its what you wear, where you buy your clothes, where you eat, where you live...
modern predudice is all thids boils down to, and to be honest several generations lie saying 'i was never like this in my day' and so on but is it really true? The predudice is now against teen generations, and within them.

Well, that's a whole other issue. The whole trend glorifying porn stars is a terrible message to all women, and a terrible message to men about women. The extension of the porn star/prostitute fashions that sexualize children is downright horrifying. However, we can't blame it all on J-Ho and Jenna Jameson. You're absolutely right, gemini61. It's just that society offers SO much more CRAP nowadays..it's parents but it's also society and the people in it that kids look up to. My idol growing up was the late Steve Prefontaine and other athletes who played for the fun of the game. Today kids watch overpaid celebrities and athletes who only have self gain in mind. They spew out horrible language and are not people that I would want my kids to look up to.

But it can be hard to find reasonably priced clothes that aren't 'fashionable' but don't make your child look frumpy. Who drives the market, parents or the manufacturers? I'm not sure any more.
