Who are some lesser-known or even obscure bands or artists that you like? Mine include:

Wilco
Luna
...and a now defunct surf-instrumental band from Portland, OR called "Satan's Pilgrims."

I can't understand why the Hip haven't caught on south of the border. Blue Rodeo are a great band also. I guess they will always be our canadian secret.

You know, sometimes it's better that way.  I hate when a band I love becomes overexposed!  Oh, and thanks for the pronunciation.!

Beru Revue,a Philly area band from the 80's. Also The A's(Another Philly band)actually should have made it big. The A's had a couple of great songs with "Woman's Got the Power","After Last Night",and "The Dance"! Also not a lot of people in America know about Scritti Politti, although their "Perfect Way" video got MTV airplay. That song was cool to groove to,I'm surprised Scritti Politti didn't become popular here!

These English metal bands are not well known here, but I think I should mention them:
Raven
Venom(Yes,me,the P.O.D. fan actually LIKED that dark brooding music during the early to mid 80's
Grim Reaper("See You In Hell")
And these stateside bands ROCKED me at one time:
Exodus("Bonded by Blood" and "the Last Act of Defiance"stand out!)
The Amboy Dukes' "Journey to the Center of The Mind" was a cool underground song in the 60's,bet some people don't remember that song! Their lead guitar player was one Theodore NUGENT! Aka.....THE NUGE!!

I remember Beru Revue and the A's, along with Hazard and the Hooters, all from Philly.  I'm surprised that none of them except for the Hooters caught on nationally.  Beru Revue was planning a reunion gig, but the bass player John Sachs is battling colon cancer.  Actually all of these bands were supposed to do a Philly Band Show in Philly last year, but so many of them were acting like jerks, the whole thing was scrapped.

Pennsygirl,

I remember Robert Hazard and The Heroes. They played them to death on the local radio station I grew up listening too. A friend of mine has the album in excellent shape. I also have stuff by The Hooters and they came to our area several times.

Some lesser known bands I'm into are Too Much Joy who opened for the Go GOs in '92 at a local college and have been hooked since and Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet best known for doing the theme song for The Kids in The Hall from HBO.

I've heard of all of these, but of course I would, because I've worked for a university radio station for over ten years!
GBV just called it quits after 20 years.

I loved Hazard and the Heroes, as did all my friends, and yes, WMMR did play them to death.  I had his album too, I had to fight some other girl in the mall for the last copy!  ;D Hazard still performs in the Philly area and is releasing a CD that he recorded last year with T Bone Wolk.

Actually Pennsygirl, the station I listened to was WSQV which is now long gone and was located in the central part of the state. I could pick up WMMR by hooking our TV cable to the back of the stereo.  8)

Sorry.  I figured for sure it was WMMR since they played the local bands all the time and sponsored their shows.

Here are some reviews of yet another band that I enjoy....East Mountain South ;)

http://www.eastmountainsouth.com/images/biopict.gif

Kat Maslich -vocals, guitar    Peter Adams -piano, harmonium, wurlitzer, shruti box, banjo, vocals, guitar

· Radio & Records 8/1/03: “As you listen to “You Dance,” “Too Soon,” “Ghost,” “Alban and Amandy” and their thoughtful rendition of Stephen Foster’s “Hard Times,” it’s easy to see that eastmountainsouth will play a very important role in contemporary music.”
· Variety 7/23/03: Maslich and Adams moved through this Gotham perf at an easy gait, trading off lead vocals and instrumental duties. Her wispy presence -- reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan - was offset nicely by his earthbound tenor, and they worked best of all (as on a cover of the Appalachian traditional "Hard Times") when harmonizing. Most of the set was drawn from the band's DreamWorks debut, a tapestry of self-penned, adapted and public domain material. The first group provided the performance's most compelling moments, particularly Maslich's hymn-like "Mark's Song” and Adams' unabashedly romantic "So Are You to Me."

· The Tennessean 7/21/03: “eastmountainsouth have developed a vital and original sound…the magic lies chiefly in the duo’s mingled voices: his a suede-rough low tenor and hers, a settling and lovely sound akin to Patty Griffin…a striking debut that mingles the ancient and the modern in a way that never fails to be lush and gorgeous.”

· Billboard: starred review: “Is it folk? Country? Ambient? One thing is certain: it is gorgeous. The group’s debut displays a formal and melodic beauty uncommon on opening bows.”

· HITS: “The astonishing thing about the pair’s DreamWorks debut is its seamless blend of old and new. Adams and Mitchell Froom juxtapose banjos and bouzoukis with loops and beats, and the result is a ravishing, timeless album…This is one for the “year’s best” lists.”

· RollingStone.com: “Their stunning vocal unity – rivaling that of the Indigo Girls – coasts gracefully over intelligent, sparkling songs…”

· Blender: *** “Maslich sings with an alluring, smoldering intimacy, and the spare but thoughtful music that Adams and producer Mitchell Froom surround her with gives many of the tracks a visual, dreamlike feel.”

· In Music We Trust: A- “ deliver a stunning debut. eastmountainsouth showcases an organic approach, full of earthy tones and simple though substantial compositions…”

· Performing Songwriter: B+ “eastmountainsouth has such a flow to the songs that it would be a perfect movie score.”

I've been listening to a few bands from the LA area lately...Headparade and Phantom Planet.  Although I don't know if anyone outside of the LA area would've heard of them?

I used to listen to a band called the Stompers back in the late 80's when I lived in Boston.  Actually I had no choice since they lived in the apartment right above me   ;)  They were cool too.
