Subject: Bad time to be playing Indiana Jones

Written By: LyricBoy on 05/13/04 at 7:04 am

I've been following this whole story about this Berg guy who got beheaded in Iraq.  Now mind you, the murder was APPALLING and I certainly hope that the scum who did this getrs their just desserts.  And I really feel sorry for his family.

That said...

It seems to me that this guy was a foolhartdy adventure-seeker.  He was neither a military man nor was he a contractor for the US Government.  In fact, he had no job whatsoever in Iraq.  This was his SECOND TRIP to Iraq to try and score some work fixing cellular towers.  At one point, his family admits, he was offered a flight out by the US Government but he refused, because "the trip to the airport would be too dangerous."

Now we have people complaining that the US Military should have "protected him more".  But he was uninvited and he chose FOR HIMSELF to hawk his wares in a war zone.  The US Military has enough on its hands than to have to deal with thrill-seekers.

2004 is a REALLY bad year to be playing Indiana Jones in Iraq, I say.

Honestly, I cannot understand why he would put himself in harm's way.  Being a thrillerseeker is one thing but being naive...is another....

Thrillseeker, maybe at first, but I think he realized the situation he was in a little too late, and suffered for it.
His family said he was trying to make his way out of the country little by little at night.
Its too bad he didn't make it, no one deserves to die that way.

I suppose.  My heart goes out to his family and friends.  I know one thing.  I want the US government to find the bastards who did this.  If it were left up to me... I would become their worst nightmare.

*starts up chainsaw* :-X

And the World's Bleeding Hearts screamed and yelled when we took some dirty pictures of Iraqi prisoners but I think the lack of protest concerning that gruesome and heartless murder of an innocent man says a lot about the political position of most right wingers from the so called Hollywood elite on up. >:(

The Iraqi prison abuse and the beheading of Mr. Berg is apples and oranges, no legit comparison.  The former is about U.S. military policy, the latter is a terrible thing that befell a U.S. citizen captured by our sworn enemies.  Rationally, a Bush supporter would say, "Yeah, that's what terrorists do, and that's why we're at war with them."  We don't expect humane behavior from terrorists, we do expect humane behavior from our military prison guards.  At least some of us do.  A lot of controversy was stirred by right-wingers who wouldn't condemn the abuse, who wrote it off as "fraternity pranks," who declared such maltreatment was justified.  The evidence and allegations the military chain of command into question.  The prison abuse scandal was by nature a much bigger story.  This doesn't diminish the gruesome nature of Nick Berg's murder, but I don't know what we'd accomplish with gratuitous outrage.
