Subject: Visions of 2009

Written By: Guest on 04/26/04 at 4:47 pm

I know it may be kinda early to predict this but how do you see the world and pop culture in late 2009 towards the end of this decade?  How do you see the music scene being like by then?  Do you expect the popular culture to have changed somewhat from how it has been in the early part of the 00's?  Do you think by 2009 the late 90's look will have totally faded since it seems to still be around now in 2004?  How do you think fashion and clothes will have become by the closing of this decade?  Does anyone expect the world and politics to get better or worse by then, especially when it comes to such affairs as the situation in Iraq and the War on Terror?  I know it's too soon to say but I was just curious to know people's opinions.

Your  Local culture and fashions will change--as they always do,  according to where you are living and who you are to wonder and worry about what *** is wearing this season or not wearing for that matter. I Hope ladies will still be on the rise in music & videos will stop playing to the common denominator of close-up shots on certain parts of women!  They can do it artistically and tastefully instead of blatantly exploitive (forgive my spelling).
As per the terrible unpleasant hostilities, the rebuilding and peace efforts, we must remember that South Africa is still in turmoil after 8 years an they were hoping for a smooth democratic transition long ago.  It takes years and years....like more than 10 for real strong democracy to take hold and appease all the fractious political groups in these places.  I don't know that you are in North America, but consider how long it took us to go from Colonial states to the first united 13 states under democratic government where equal rights were not yet available to everyone. The peace process in Iraq is so slow because they want to get all the groups involved so they feel they are represented, which will be completely difficult if some of these groups are not apt to be cooperative toward others of different groups if you understand what i mean??  So, the long haul is all there is to wait for. There is no fast fix now. it's not going to be easy, and it's not going to be instant peace either.  We and the rest of the world will have to be vigilant against those who still hate us. But I have heard from language professors at my university who travel in Central and South America who bring the message that these countries still consider themselves Americans so they feel sympathy and pain for North America's enduring the  9/11  disaster.  Knowing we have this support makes my heart smile and my eyes swell with a little tear. Forgive the sentiment, but I can't change how I feel.
;)The above is part my opinion and partly I listen to talk radio and this is what the political analyst types are saying.

I would say that 2009 will be way diffrent from 2000 as in all decades u see a dramatic change in style and society from the begining of the decade to the end of the decade.I think that in 2009 Freedom Tower in NYC would be complete ;D, the Iraq war probably just ended ,styles changed dramatically, and music might have began to change a few years before 2009. ;)

I keep wondering when they're gonna finally start mass-producing personal jet-packs for private use. Hey Dean Kamen, no one gives a rat's @ss about your stupid Segway scooter, get off your butt and build me a jet-pack!!!

You say that but I watched this documentary on the telly called 'Time Machine' and it mentions that America is living on a natural time-bomb which is the geyser in Yellowstone Park (called 'Old Faithful'?) and it goes off once every 90 minutes. Apparently, it is very close to a volcano that would errupt and wipe out half of America and change the world's climate permanently. The Volcano has gone off only a few times in history but is set to go off in the very near future (apparently).

Hold on to your hats, everyone.

Ah yes, I heard that one too. Kind of scary, but then again I could get hit by a stray bullet tomorrow in the midst of a drive by shooting, so it doesn't really bother me much. :)

Gosh, Jessica, is it really that probable?

That's what we Brits don't understand. I guess our sense of crime and violence (despite being pretty bad) is not as extreme as what happens in America (Drive by shootings in Britain are very rare - though I heard of one in Birmingham about a year or so ago where two people got shot in passing fire).

Well Bobby, they don't happen every day (thankfully), but there's been quite a number of drug-related shootings around London (and the other major cities) in recent years - and yes, a couple of 'unfortunates' have got involved in the crossfire...and let's face it, these guys aren't going to hang around to offer apologies and assistance...

I kid you not - there are some places in the smoke where I grew up where I wouldn't walk the streets now if you paid me...

It can  happen. During Christmas of last year, someone pulled a drive by shooting on the shopping mall over here and hit a woman pushing her baby in a stroller. People are stupid. ::)

Ah I see, Paul. I've heard horror stories about opening doors to people in Brixton late at night. I went over there to stay with a friend and there was a knock at the door one night at 10:00pm. My friend was clearly agitated and it took us quarter of an hour to muster the courage to open the door! When we finally opened it, it was just his daft mate who popped around for something to do.  ::)

Where abouts in London did you grow up, Paul? You may have answered this previously in other threads but I might have missed it along the way.

I was located in sunny Peckham, of all places...(and no, there's no yellow Reliant Robins cruising the streets!), which formed part of the 'unholy trinity' with the aforementioned Brixton to the South and New Cross to the East...

...in short, an altogether crummy hell-hole...I wouldn't wish it on anyone...

Modified to add...Peckham was where the tragic murder (still unsolved) of Damilola Taylor took place - in actual fact, I used to live on that very estate, The North Peckham...(cringe)

Ah man. I feel for you. Talking of 'Only fools and horses' (not for too long, I'm sure you've heard all these queries before). Is there such thing as 'Nelson Mandela house' or is that a reference to something else?

The murder of Damilola Taylor was truly awful. Probably made worse by the fact that he didn't die instantly but spent the last moments of his life bleeding on the stairs.

There isn't...but in the spirit of the 'PC' age, the council did re-christen one of its municipal buildings as 'Winnie Mandela House' (!)...this was swiftly re-christened again when details of her 'mis-doings' came to light, and she wasn't exactly the paragon of virtue she claimed to be...all at a cost to the local taxpayers, of course!

Oddly, the TV series was in full swing before this change - so who influenced who?

How about Wolver'ampton, Bobby? Ever go back there?

Street gangs will continue to run rampant....music will still suck for the most part...and violence will be even more prevalent in exposure to kids then ever...Oh and lastly, people will continue to believe it's cool to wear pants that make them look like they're carrying around a load in them :P

Ah, very interesting.  :)

I would go back to visit (though I haven't returned in four years) but I couldn't go up there to stay. My girlfriend has more family down here than I have up there so it's only fair to remain (besides I would have to drag her up there kicking and screaming if I wanted to go back and she's a tough girl - no thanks! ;D).

And now we're up to our long-distance dedication.  And this is about a situation we can all understand, whether we wound up with kids or pets or neither.  It's from an Internet poster called Vlad the Imfailer in a five year old thread on a board called inthe00s.com.  And here's what he writes:

"Dear Casey, this may seem to be a strange dedication requesst, but I'm quite sincere, and it'll mean a lot if you play it.  There were no recent deaths in the family, so it's OK if you come into this after an up-tempo record.  It's from a little band called Telex.  And they were most certainly a part of..."

Well, Vlad got a little ponderous, man, but he made a concerted effort to help me come out of an up-tempo number, so here's Telex- We Are All Getting Old, from 1980's Neurovision.
