A U.S. citizen since 1941, but always a very English gentleman, Cooke hosted PBS's "Masterpiece Theater" from 1971 to 1993.
He also did an acclaimed series in 1972 called "America." My grandparents had the accompanying coffee table book. The photo of Cooke on the jacket is still the image I have of him.
I did not realize he was still out and about until a few years ago when I started listening to the BBC. I was taken aback to hear the familiar, plummy voice still reading "Alistair Cooke's Letter from America."
"Oh my god," I exclaimed, "he must be pushing 100!" He was a few years younger than I thought, nevertheless, in his 90s, he was still so lucid and clever in his observations about goings-on in American culture.
I just saw his picture on the front pages of the papers today. I was going to post the news myself, but Indy-gent beat me to it.
So long Alistair, and thanks for the memories. :'(
On a note of levity, I've corrected people confusing one English Alistair for another.
"Alistair Cooke? Didn't he write the Satanic bible and call himself 'the evilist man in the world'?"
"Alistair Crowley? Oh yeah, he's the host of 'Masterpiece Theatre..."
LOL, "Alistair Crowley's Letter from America," that's more like it these days!
:D

Yes, I remember that skit on "Sesame Street". Cookie Monster did "Monsterpiece Theater", then it cut to Sir Cooke saying "I am the real Alistair Cookie."

This is where I know Alistair Cooke from. Apparently the series was only intended to be 13 weeks long. It lasted more than 50 years.
He announced his retirement about a month ago because of increasing ill-health.
