Subject: 2000s are cool...
...if u like to live in a time where nothing is really big no more, no impact (pop culture standpoint)
12 years ago u had to buy the album of Nirvana, pearl jam, etc.
Now there is no band that sticks out, if u buy an incubus CD, ppl would be like, who the hell is that?
Back then it was cool to play nintendo, because it was new.
Now ure a nerd if you play videogames. Too many systems. Everybody knew about Mario, tetris...there are no games that are huge, except GTA, witch is a violent, sexual game.
Back then you ask a person if they watched
Seinfeld, or Fresh Prince of Bel-air yesterday...They be like oh yeah it was funny.
Now if you ask them if they watched "My wife and kids" they'll be like WTF. There are no shows that are making a big impact that are not reality.
In Sports, NBA had magic, larry, and JOrdan that revolutionized the game, and ppl were into that. Michael jordan was huge, and everyone knew about him. And ppl played ball and bball was a very popular sport
Now, nobody talks about Kobe, or sing "I wanna be like Kobe" (not because of the trial) The popularity is still there, but there is no huge thing that sticks out, and fans are dead. Playing bball is not even considered cool, if u go to the park and ball all day, ure considered of having no life.
SNL was huge, now there are too many shows. SNL isnt a must watch, huge popular show no more.
Every Hip HOp dude, loved 2pac, and the east. v.s. west thing was a big thing.
Who the hell gives a crap about 50 cent, some ppl like em, some dont...there is nothing really exciting in music no more.
To sum it all up:
Videogames- Nintendo, genesis came out,,,ppl went nuts and sonic, mario, was famous...now its like "Prince of Persia?" how corny
TV- Certain Sitcoms were popular and everyone knew about them. There is nothing on TV, except reality shows, that are really making a huge impact.
Sports-Joe Montana, Elway, were being talked about...Jordan was huged...bball was played with passion...Now there is nothing really that stunning, because the feats have been accomplished. NFL is still great.
Fashion- flat tops were popular, high top sneakers, etc.
Now u can wear whareve u want.
00s are cool but nothing is really huge. everything has been done.

^People said the exact same thing about the 1990's, that it was unoriginal, boring, gloomy and uninspiring compared to the 80's.
I think you are just gettting older, and therefore the 2000's don't compare to your more youthful and colorful memories of the 90's.
Subject: Re: 2000s are cool...
i know, a lot of us don't thin the 2000's are looking too good, but we don't have to make a new post every week dogging this decade, which isn't even half done yet.

That's right.
I happen to think the 2000s aren't really so bad. Every decade has it's goodpoints and not so good points. I even have no doubt in my mind that maybe in the 2010s, most of us will want to go back to the 2000s. It's just the way it is.

I like this decade mainly because I'm at a nice age. In the 2010's, when I start losing my baby fat and try to buy every Oil of Olay product I can get my hands on, then I'll probably wanna go back here. ;) lol
But your right about the music. Most new rock sucks. I gotta have my Pearl Jam, my Nirvana, my Metallica, etc... However I am guilty of listening to 50 Cent. :-[

I like the 00s so far. With the exception of all those reality tv shows, and the wars other than that everything is coooool and laaaaiiid back, just like the 90s.
Subject: Re: 2000s are cool...
Why do you guys keep saying that I think the 00s are bad!!!
I am not saying theyre bad...I'm saying that nothing is big no more, lets say 10-15 years ago:
Nirvana, Pearl Jam dominated music.
MJ ruled basketball
SNL, Sienfeld, Beverly hills90210, fresh prince etc....ruled TV
etc.
Now nothing is making such a great impact now because everything has reached its limit.
There isn't that one sports icon that sticks out, or that tv show, or band, hip hop group
Look in the 50s it was elvis, hoola hoops, malts
60s: Beatlmania, drugs, sex, hendrix, hippie, tiedie shits
70s:Led Zeppelin, platform shoes, big hair, disco
80s: duran duran, magic johnson, beginning of rap, cosby, etc.
90s: Michael Jordan, Pearl Jam, Sienfeld, Dumb and dumber, 2pac.etc.
All those things were huge in their time.
Now in the 00s there arnt things in todays pop culture that is the trademark for this decade.
Subject: Re: 2000s are cool...
I sure think this decade sucks, I have to see these '00s people at school all the time...they're pretty lame, all of them with their cell phones and awful music and everything...most of the kids don't even know how to read, I swear! You wouldn't believe how many people have told me they haven't read a book before! Television is becoming our culture.
Subject: Re: 2000s are cool...
It's me again ;D
What about all these digital things that we use today, like cell phones that take pictures which was not part of our culture ten years ago. Today we have vehicles that talk back to us, you know those little things that we hardly take to notice, but that are technological imapcts for our culture, because we didn't have them like say in 1976 or 1993. You know what I mean.
We don't see the changes becauee we're use to having huge impacts.
Subject: Re: 2000s are cool...
Gimme my Outkast and White Stripes. Give me The Apprentice. Give me Lord of the Rings. You can go live in the past.

Nevermind that Michael Jordan was originally an 80's star, back to your other points...
The 2000's have LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Yao Ming, Tom Brady, Steve McNair. There are dominate sports stars out there, you just have to look for them. Is there a guy like Michael Jordan, who in the 80's and 90's changed everything? Well not really. Though LeBron James is truly stunning, the guy is a freak of nature.
Movies: Lord of the Rings, the two Matrix movies, the two Star Wars prequels, The Passion of the Christ, Finding Nemo, etc, etc...
TV: Alias, Practice, 24, Roswell, Smallville,
Music: Outkast, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Beyonce, (granted a couple of these started in the very late 90s, but Britney is really more 00s then 90s).
A lot of people that were older then 10 in 1989 really HATED the 90s and thought nothing new or original was going on. A lot of folks despised grunge music and gangsta rap. So none of this is new.
Subject: Re: 2000s are cool...
Whats good about the 00's:
Music: Norah Jones, Evanesence, Alicia Keys, and Kanye West.
Music I don't care for: The teen-pop, rap-metal, and the Ho-Hum Rap.
TV shows I like: CSI Miami, Without A Trace, I actually like the Apprentice(usually I hate reality shows.) I like Crossing Jordan too.
TV shows i can't stand: all these Reality shows.
Sports: well Football has been cool the past few years. As the post up above said we have Steve McNair and Tom Brady. I don't like Tom Brady because I am a New York Jet Fan.
In basketball we have Pau Gasol, Jason Kidd, Jermaine O' Neal, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Garnett, and Tim Duncan.
In NASCAR Racing we have Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth, Jiimmie Johnson, and Ryan Newman.
Going back to TV there is really no trademark TV show though.
I look at the 00's and its just missing something. Can't point it out. I think the Cell Phone thing will clam down and eventually the reality TV shows will go away. The talk show craze of the 90's went away didn't? It took 3-4 years but it went away. There is good things and bad things about every decade. The difference between the 00's and 80's/90's everything is just so targeted to teens that the people over age 20 feel left out in the cold. I'm 24 and I feel left out in the cold.
Subject: Re: 2000s are cool...
I think the 2000's are the same pop culture animal as the 90's. The way the 70's were pretty much the same animal as the 60's. Sure there were differences between the 70's and 60's, but they were not that noticeable.
The 00's are the same way to the 90's. I think sometime around 2008/2009 and 2010, we will FINALLY see pop culture change and shift into something else. But this present late 90's style will most likely be popular for another 4-5 years.
Subject: Re: 2000s are cool...
A lot of people are gonna look back at the 2000s, and think it's the worst decade ever:
Music sucks
Lack of originality in movies
Not as many good movies as there used to be
Wars
A lot of people hate George W. Bush.
This could be the worst decade ever. At least as of now.

Dude, lack of originality in movies!...Like I said...everything has been done.
Lotta ppl hated George Bush's father 2.
Some ppl didnt like the music in the 90s.
Subject: Re: 2000s are cool...
I actually think the late 90s are finally dying down. In 1999, we never saw people wearing sideways baseball caps(at least without being ridiculed). Clothing is even skimpier.
Nu Metal, while being more of a novelty in the 90s, became a huge sensation since 2000 with bands like Linkin Park(which I like).
Rap is bigger than ever(but just waaay too big IMO).
Extreme sports were actually cool in the 70s, 80s and 90s, then they eventually became over-commercialized, just like everything else.
I also think most people who hated Bill Clinton are wishing he was still in charge now.
Even Britney Spears of 1999 seemed more like Debbie Gibson compared to what she's like today. Just like boy bands like N*SYNC seemed more like New Kids On the Block compared to today.
I sorta view it as the other way around with games: video games back then were still viewed as a nerd's toy, whereas games are considered the coolest for college and high school students today. I used to play SNES when it was new, and noone else seemed to care, but now everyone I talk to's raving about getting an X-Box or some other new system. Now everyone's expecting PS3, XBox2 or the next Nintendo system to come out in 2005 or 06. In 1991, SNES was new, and then in 1996 N64 was new; since I was 11-16 then, it wasn't that big a change. But now that I'm an adult, 5 years seems way too fast.
I think nostalgia's the biggest trend in this decade so far. I Love the 80s, I Love the 70s, 101 reasons the 90s ruled, etc... There are differences between then & now if you look hard enough.

I'm glad you wrote this, because for the past 5 years or so I thought I was imagining it. I'm 26 and I feel left out in the cold too. It seems like since 1999, everything in our pop culture is SO targeted to teenagers. And I was only 21 in 1999, and at the time a mere 3 years removed from high school, but I remember feeling like an old guy already.
In the 80's and the 90's up till 1998, the teenage pop culture had it's own place, it didn't spill over and force itself onto the mainstream over 21 masses like it does now. Teen stuff wasn't so in your face like it is now. Say back in the mid 90's, you didn't see Alicia Silverstone, Claire Daines, or the cast of 90210 just EVERYWHERE you looked. These days, teen stuff is everywhere whether you like it or not. TV right now is just junk, call me old but it's junk. And I consider "reality TV" to be more teenage programing. Reality TV's primary audience is bored teenagers that could actually find it entertaining and get into the private lifes of complete strangers.

INo, Paul you are not imagining things. I feel like I'm 40 in terms of following pop culture. I wouldn't call you old because the reality show stuff is junk. When I was in the record store the last time it went to go look at compolation CD's of the 90's. I don't even think I looked at today's music CD's. I'm with you on the 1998 thing too. I just couldn't believe how the teen-pop was all over the place in 1999. Graduating in June of 1998 6 months later and I felt old as heck. I was 19 in 1999.

OMG!...Being a 17-year-old, living in the '00s. The '90s were quite the age of boredom to me. I think the even utter the words '00s & boring in the same sentence is somewhat naive and favored. Have you listened to some of the music today. It has just as much musicality as that of the '90s, '80s, or '70s. I was looking at a previous thread, where they were comparing '90s rap & hip-hop to that of the '00s. It's extremely different, much less "bling-blingy" and more mature and full of message. There are some rappers(Chingy, Lil Jon, etc.) that are still stuck in the '90s. Yet believe me they aren't that popular. Television has its hits, just like the '90s. Will & Grace, Frasier, Friends, My Wife & Kids, CSI(CSI:Miami), and of course The O.C. and One Tree Hill, Just to name a few. I go to school often and talk about TV, music, you name it. I do think a lot of you are just beyond your years.
OH! And by the way! Fashion is so not similar to the 1990s. If you even look at what teenagers and even what adults are wearing. It has very noticable differences. The return of the flare, pastel and "off-key" colors, that were extremely popular in the '50s and early '60s. No one wore pastel in the '90s! Cords, stonewashing, and darker jeans. As well as sneakers(popular pre-'90s), especially the chucks, which have already made a major comeback. I actually have a pair of two-tone(baby blue, tan or light-brown, and dark brown) Nikes that are very cute and could be considered "retro." Besides the whole "ghetto-fabulous" apparel, colors are extremely vibrant, mixed, and coordinated. Not since the '50s have colors been so outly displayed I.M.O.

Gen. Y does have more money and teenagers than any of its predecessors. While not comparing other decades, I don't see how teenagers are taking over. With the exception of MTV, many television channels have programming for a more mature audience. I don't see how shows like Will & Grace or Survivor even are aimed at a teenage audience. I, for one, don't never will watch Survivor, nor do I watch any other reality show(even American Idol), with the exception of The Apprentice. Your life, or rather your decade is what you make it. And obviously you haven't seen the array of television choices out there, even on terrestrial television.

i don't think you can really argue now is a less "bling blingy" time than the 90s, i mean up until puffy not that many popular rappers were just doing whole songs about their "mercedes and girls and yachts", and it wasn't even that bad until the end of 1999 when B.G. came out with "bling bling"...since then the "club party rap" has been on the rise and its even changed lots of r&b into wannabe rap(see Usher song/video "Yeah" for latest example)

Ok so 90210 was big in the early 90s. Well there is a show called the OC that is making quite an impact on all ages right now. One of the few that isn't reality. It even beat out American Idol the last few Wednesdays. CSI is pretty good too.

What you might be saying is that the 2000s lacks a culture identity of it's own.
I think it's only looking back that we realise what a decade was all about. Did people of the 70s really think 'wow this is a vital period of time, man' while they were wearing big hair (also available in the 80s), platform shoes and listening to Led Zeppelin records?
Did the film 'Dumb and Dumber' really make the 90s such an important decade?
