Subject: College Basketball Bracket Time

Written By: Indy Gent on 03/14/04 at 02:03 p.m.

With Duke losing to Maryland in the ACC final and Kentucky winning over Florida, who in? Who's out? I've given up on any of the Indiana contingent (other than Valpo, and they had to beat IUPUI to get in), since neither Purdue nor Notre Dame are going to get invited for anything other than NIT. But St. Joe's, Stanford and maybe Kentucky or Oklahoma State could get #1 seeds. Perhaps the biggest disappointments are Louisville and Kansas. But what are your choices to make it in, and whose going to win it all?

For anyone who is interested, I set up a bracket system for us to have fun with.  No money, just bragging rights :)

http://ricecube.mayhem.sportsline.com

You need a CBS Sportsline ID to play, and if you're interested in getting into the bracket (there's no way for me to make it public) please PM me your e-mail address and I swear I won't spam you, this is so I can invite you in.

You can also try to access it using the URL I provided, and use the password "ricecubebracket" to get in :)

Hope you guys and gals join in, the more the merrier :D

I'm going with my team UConn. They won it all in 1999. I think they will do it again. The most interesting 1st round game I have seen in the NCAa Tournament in years I think is 8th seeded Seton Hall meets 9th seeded Arizona. That is going to be a classic. 1991 when these teams met in the Sweet 16 it was a pretty close game. I expect some of the same 13 years later.

Go Crusaders (Valpo)

Who am I kidding? :( I'll pick Duke or Kentucky to win it all again.

I haven't quite decided on the finals (I'm debating in my head), but I think the Final 4 will end up being Gonzaga, Pitt, UConn, and North Carolina.

Someone at my school set one of these up today, so I pooled in my two dollars. :D  I doubt I'll win anything in the end, but my final four are OK State, Georgia Tech, UConn, and Texas.  We'll see. :P

I picked UNC to be the "sleeper" but what the heck do I know ;)  I don't think Duke's gonna get far.

PS.  Whoever is interested, you have until Wednesday to make your picks for the NCAA Bracket challenge so if you wanna get into the bracket please PM me :)

Well, for you Bob Knight fans, Texas Tech defeated Charlotte 78-76. And there goes the best chance for a #16 to knock off a #1 seed when St. Joe's knocked off Liberty 82-63. And Stanford also won. Maybe, if Duke or Kentucky are caught napping, they, too could get beat. But I doubt it. :(

Final Four:

Okie St.
Cincinnati
Kentucky
Stanford

I think UConn is the most overrated team I've seen all year.  They've shown me nothing except that they can win soundly against weaker opponents.  They don't do so well against aggressive teams like GT and UNC.  I think they will have their hands full when they meet some of the tougher competition.

Where the heck did Nevada come from? First they beat Michigan State and they beat Gonzaga today. Also Stanford they always choke in early rounds in the NCAA tournament. Losing to Alabama I didn't see that coming. One last thing, Pacific beating Providence on Friday? That is brutal.

Even though my bracket is pretty much destroyed now, I take solace in knowing that since 90% of the games have been incredibly close, it really could have gone either way.

This is why y'all should enter bracket pools, not even the experts can predict victory because these tournaments are so unpredictable, and that's what makes things exciting ;)

Kentucky losing to UAB? Now I will set my brackets on fire. I won't really do that but my brackets deserve to be thrown away.

Subject: Re: College Basketball Bracket Time

Now with Kentucky gone, Duke has to be the prohibitive favorite. At least in theory. :-/
Illinois will be tough though.
The best match-up, however, will be Pitt and Oklahoma St. Can Eddie Sutton finally go all the way? Or will Pitt's experience carry them on?

I'm still going with Duke though until somebodt knocks them out.

After Kentucky, Arizona and both North Carolina & N.C.State went down my interest in the tournament has dwindled to the horrible thought of Duke taking yet another one....I long for 1990 and UNLV ripping them a new one by a still record margin of 30....103-73....those were the days, my friend :D

Subject: Re: College Basketball Bracket Time

I don't like Duke either. But a more horrible thought, at least for Roy Williams, is that Kansas will take it all after he took off for NC and Bill Self inherited his old team.
I also want UConn to lose to Vandy. Any team who fails so fast after being preseason #1 doesn't deserve anything IMHO. The last thing I need is a Duke-UConn rematch of 1999. ::)

Yeah I remember that UNLV team that had players like Greg Anthony, Anderson Hunt, Larry Johnson, and Stacey Augmon. Jerry "Tark The Shark" Tarkanian was coaching that team. That was a great team. I remember that game they lost to Duke in the 1991 NCAA Final Four a little bit. They went 34-1 that year what their only loss being to Duke in the Final Four in Indianapolis. Believe me I don't like Duke. I wish UNLV won that game. You know St. Joesphs reminds of that 1991 UNLV team alot if you think about it. UNLV played in that small conference called The Big West just like the St. Joe's now plays in a small conference. I can't wait for that ST Joes-Wake game tommorow with Wake's Chris Paul going up against ST. Joes's Jameer Nelson. Should be a good match-up. UConn is my fave team though.

Subject: Re: College Basketball Bracket Time

Written By: Tv on 03/25/04 at 11:15 p.m.

Well St. Joes beat Wake and it looks like the Billy Packer-Phil Martelli fued is a thing of the past.

Alabama killed Syracuse. Alabama looks like a real athletic team. Uconn routed Vandy.

St. Joe's will play Oklahoma State, and Uconn plays Alabama on Saturday. St. Joes and Oklahoma State should play a real close game. Uconn-Alabama: I'm not sure about. Uconn just will have too much talent for Alabama to contend with I think.

Subject: Re: College Basketball Bracket Time

Written By: Indy Gent on 03/26/04 at 10:42 a.m.

Maybe, but Martelli still hasn't proven Packer wrong yet. He might Saturday, but Okie St. should beat these pretenders.
However, that's what I've said for half of St. Joe's opponents this season, and look what they've done. :-/

Martelli did shake hands with Packer after the Wake-St. Joe's game. They shook hands Wednesday too. CBS just pulled a shock value stunt: They had Packer doing the St-Joe's-Wake game because of the Martelli fued and Packer went to college at Wake Forest.

I think St. Joe's is a good team no matter who they are playing. They are what 30-1 now? Nobody ever questioned UNLV in the early 90's so why question how good St. Joe's is? I don't understand it.

And how about Larry Bird and Indiana State in 1979? It had to take "Magic" to finally beat these guys.
And yes, people did question UNLV because the press hounded Tarkanian on his recruiting techniques and dwelled on his "towel eating".

Thats true you got me on that UNLV recruiting thing. I think after the 1991-1992 Season UNLV got in trouble with their program and sanctions were put down by the NCAA. Jerry's towel eating was funny though.

Anyway How about this Xavier team? Their something else. When I saw Duke play I thought J.J. Redick was Christian Laitner reincarnated from about 10-11 years ago That kind of scares me.

Georgia Tech vs Kansas I think if Georgia Tech doesn't have B.J. Elder available for Sunday's game they will be shorthanded vs Kansas. Will Bynum will have to pick-up the slack if B.J. Elder doesn't play like he did against Nevada for Georgia Tech on Sunday.

As far as Kansas is concerned this coach Bill Self he wins where ever he goes: Tulsa, Illinois, and now Kansas.
