Subject: Canada...where's the sense of humor?
Written By: 80sRocked on 02/17/04 at 02:08 p.m.
Last week Conan O'Brien took his show to Toronto (at the request of the Candaian govt), and now are calling the show "racist", "vile", "hate-mongering"...etc. ::)
They are also demanding that the $1million they paid NBC to have him come up there be returned. This is insane.
If anyone seen the show, or has seen it in the past, there is the dog called "Triumph the Insult Comic Dog". He has been part of the show for years. Basically he insults people...hence the name. Well the folks of Quebec were "offended" apparently. What baffles me is that if the Canadian govt paid to have the show go there, obviously they had seen the show before and knew what they were getting, and now they are whining about it. ::)

I wonder if people will get themselves into a tizzy over the season finale of South Park which seemed to suggest some not so nice things about Canadians (or at least Canadians from certain provinces).
Conan O'Brien is a late night comedy show..COMEDY!!! Now if George Bush said some of the things that Conan or the South Park folks (or Don Cherry for that matter..hehehe) said then it probably wouldn't be appropriate.
We aren't innocent of this type of comedy...(ie) Rick Mercer does a pretty good job of making Americans look very ignorant.
Would there be this much stink about the whole situation if Conan had picked on the Maritimes or Western provinces?

You have no idea how much s*** I had to put up with at work last week, since i'm the only anglophone there.
The government are a bunch of hypocrits. We have a show starring Rick Mercer that plays on the CBC (a publicly funded network) called "This hour Has 22 Minutes". He has a segment called Talking To Americans where he goes to the States and basically shows how much Americans don't know about Canada. He's not as crude as Triumph but he does get normal people and politicians to say things like "Congratulations on switching to the 24 hour clock".
Like I said he's not as rude and obnoxious as Triumph but he is still making fun of people.
Another thing you might not be aware of is the rivalry that we Montrealers have with Torontonians.

That event happened after some anti-French comments have been made on CBC NHL broadcasts.
I guess canadians, especially french speaking ones, are a little bit tired and i can understand them.
There, a site of a watchdog group about french bashing with many articles about this event (which, i agree, is not so important, but the accumulation...):

Talk about the "pot calling the kettle black". ::)
So Gonad O'Brien made fun of the Quebecois. Big deal. They are the same ones who discriminate against non-Francophones every day of the week. >:(
They need to get a life. And if they don't like it, they don't have to watch The Gonad O'Brien Show anyway. :P

Quoting:

End Quote
We'd still be ignored even if we did cry foul. >:( ;)

Well, Conan did say sorry to Quebec with the aid of a French translator. ;D

I would tell them "Go watch 'Canadian Bacon' or 'SCTV' and get a life" :P
Personally, I think part of the problems Canadians have is their almost schitzo language issue. I know I have friends in BC. They do NOT speak French, but because of a minority on the other side of the country, they have to do everything in French. She complained to me how much this costs them, and it is rediculous.
Imagine what would happen here in the US if they mandated businesses to make everything in English and SPanish?

We should be asking, "Why has humor gotten worse with time?" I do not find Conan or his insult puppet shtick amusing at all. (I don't condemn those who like him.) In fact, most of the scatological American humor is getting to be old hat. There is no originally left in anything Americans do. Quebec should have free speech like Americans. Having said that, I don't approve Separatists' secession attempts because the rest of Canada would suffer. If they don't like anyone, God should just let the Province literally break off and move to Russia.
