Subject: Not often I do this- Virus Warning
So far I've been hit with nearly 100 incoming emails today by the MyDoom virus... uninfected so far, thanks to an ingrained habit *NEVER* to click an attachment unless I know what it is in advance...
This one ain't a hoax, guys...
http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=mydoom
Distinguishing Characteristics
A MyDoom e-mail spoofs its sender so that it appears to come from one of your friends, contacts, or a credible institutions such as a bank or phone company. The Subject is randomized. So far we've seen the variations below:
hi
hello
HELLO
error
Mail Delivery System
Mail Transaction Failed
Server Report
status
test
Test
Server Request
MyDoom is so new that the anti-virus vendors have not compiled their list of variations at the time of this writing. There may be other Subjects we haven't listed. MyDoom's body is also random. So far we know of these three variations:
The message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encoding and has been sent as a binary attachment.
The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a binary attachment.
Mail transaction failed. Partial message is available.
We believe those credible bodies partly contribute to MyDoom's suceess. They certainly sound like legitimate errors and lead one to believe that the attached file could be the message that your e-mail client can't display. Don't fall for it!

Thanx philbo! ;)
I got one of those today ("test") and deleted it. :(

Hubby got one of these at work, too. Luckily, he opened the email using his Blackberry & didn't open the attachment so his laptop wasn't infected. He's just hoping it doesn't do anything to his BB.
Thanks for the warning.

Darn, I don't know if I got an email for the virus because I hit my delete button so fast, don't know what emails I get anymore ???
Subject: Re: Not often I do this- Virus Warning
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones...not one yet...and I have 3 e-mail addresses...
Guess I should warn my family though. Qhosts, Klez, and BugBear have all been on my computer at some time, and I think one of them might be responsible. And father just realized that those "Congratulations! You are the winner!" pop-ups are just spam... ::) :-/

CRAP! I keep getting messages with "hi" and "hello" in it.What the heck is that all about? >:( ???

I had 6 of these emails in my inbox so far today.
They all came as the "Mail Delivery System" subject line, claiming a message I had sent had failed.
Its amazing to me how fast these viruses spread globally when it can all be avoided by simply NEVER opening attachements unless you are 110% who it is coming from.

To summarize: users have a habit of clicking first and thinking after it's too late... must admit, I was wondering the same thing, though: this has been the first virus in months to hit a Mcafee "high risk" warning, which, for what is almost a liveware virus, is ridiculous.
I guess it's psychology again - just like the Anna Kournikova "pix" virus caused lots of people to click without thinking, the text on these messages has been carefully thought out to catch the unwary.

I had several of these e-mails in my in box yesterday. The very first one alerted me to the possibility of a virus because it was alledgedly from a colleague, who had sadly passed away shortly before Christmas.
I was talking to a guy from our computer department today and he said that there are still 600+ people on campus with infected machines who have not taken any action to clear the virus from their computer. They will be getting a visit from their local IT rep soon.

About a dozen today... so slightly less than yesterday: whatever you do, DON'T click the attachment that comes with it...
Subject: Re: Not often I do this- Virus Warning
I am getting quite a few "Test" ones this week. My Norton checker is picking them all up nicely.
Also got an email from Yahoo Groups stating it would be blocking all emails with the subject titles Phil has listed above. So thats one company actually doing something about it. Many others are not so proactive.
Its a pain tho cos I almost always title my emails "Hi" - so I need to think of something more original !!

What about: "Novirus-Hi" ;-)
...having said that, sounds like a school from a cheap horror flick..
Subject: Re: Not often I do this- Virus Warning
As much crap as I get in my inbox daily, I would think that I would have gotten one of these. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I have a question, though, (bear with me I'm a little ignorant when it comes to computers) If my AV software gets one of these, how do I know? Does it automatically delete it so I never see it or will I get some sort of pop-up window? Just wondering.
Subject: Re: Not often I do this- Virus Warning
That depends on what AV software you are running. I use Norton AV 2004, and it can be configured to either delete on detection (and to notify you with a pop-up or just do it silently without interruption), quarantine it (great for collectors) ;), repair and if it cannot repair it, quarantine it or delete it... again, it can notify you or just do it silently automatically.
Keep your definitions up to date and your risk is very small, indeed.

....And always update Norton Anti Virus! ;D

Question on a possible infected e-mail (that I didn't open, FYI, just have a question)...
I got a "Returned mail: Error" e-mail from "Mailer-daemon@prodigy.net". I didn't open the e-mail, and it didn't have an attachent, but I was really confused because I've never sent an e-mail to a Prodigy user, nor am I one myself. ???

Delete that sucker! :o
If in doubt, throw it out (into the e-mail trash can).
