Subject: The Downfall of Cable  Networks

Written By: woops on 01/25/04 at 00:59 a.m.

Many people, including myself, know that MTV quickly went downhill in the 1990's, but now there's many other networks that aren't what they used to be.

1.Disney Channel
Then...A family type network that aired classic Disney movies, cartoons, tv shows, and a fair amount of kids' programming and original programming.

Now...a Nickelodeon clone. Aiming for the pre teen market.

2. VH1
Then...a music network for older people (No Offense) or people sick of the hip MTV culture. Shown music videos and music based shows like "Big '80's", "Sex Appeal", "Pop Up Video", "Rock Show", "Women's First", etc.
'80's videos now can be seen on VH1 Classic. In their entirity.

Now...a blend of current MTV and E! Television

3. Cartoon Network
Then...shown a variety of classic Hanna Barbera & Warner Brothers cartoons and fairly shown their original programming in the late '90's. Like around 1997.

Now...Mostly shows their original programming. Hardly shows classic Hanna Barbera cartoons, now on Boomerang. Black & White Warner Brothers, Betty Boop, and Popeye taken off.
Classic Warner Brothers shown on 3:00 AM  Sunday. Hardly shown on any other day. Only shows "Tom & Jerry" and Scooby Doo cartoons. "Adult Swim" is the only improvement from the network.

4. MTV 2
Then...plays all music videos from different eras, genres, and artists. Basically what MTV used to be.  From the '80's and '90's.

Now...an expanded version of the 3:00 AM video block shown on regular MTV. Overplaying current hip hop, pop punk, and numetal. The only three good factors is that they don't play teen pop and air classic hip hop & R&B videos from the '80's to mid '90's. And aired uncensored/banned videos on their "Controversial Videos" special.

Any thoughts about this or other networks that declined in the last few years.

Regarding MTV:

I avoid it at all cost nowadays.  It's become 99.9% garbage.  I long for the days when Music Television actually means good music videos.  Remember when MTV used to show...videos?  Now it focuses on the hip-hop genre.  Blah. :P

Regarding Cartoon Network:

Typically I watch it nightly for "Family Guy" reruns. (I know, but its so funny :)).  And of course you can never go wrong with calssic Looney Toons reruns. :)

You know what I think is really missing from cable TV that would really appeal to a mass market?

The Britney Channel.  :D

All Britney... all the time... no interruptions...

;D

I remember at one time it was a premium channel like HBO and Showtime that you had to pay extra to get.  They had lots of fun stuff to watch. Now its a basic service.  But, remember Disney now has a real network to call its own, ABC.

Thats right, MTV is no longer (for a while actually) programming what it originally intended......MUSIC.  How I long for the days back in the 80s where whenever you turned it on guaranteed there would be a video playing.  Now you are lucky if you catch one.  Think about it, now there is a whole generation out there that probably hasnt seen a music video in its entirety.  I almost feel bad for them.
