Subject: Today's Rap/Hip Hop

Written By: prodigy on 01/21/04 at 05:39 p.m.

Hey guys, who here agrees with me that today's hip hop/ rap is just horrible, even the videos.  Every song is about the same thing, and the rhyming isn't that creative as compared to as back in the day (late 80s-early90s). Back then you had Mcs talking growing up, playing ball, how a good rhymer there were, and didn't talk about their possessions.

Now it's all corrupted...Less creativity....They don't even dance no more...It seems they had more fun back then,,they're beats were funky they smiled...now they are wearing 13 garments and just giving a cold stare at the camera as shining chains are dangling from their necks, and 10 girls are grabbing his crotch...I mean c'mon...What
s the use of getting all fancy...it was better,,,,simpler.

Humpty Dumpty-Digital Undergound
Jump-Kris Kros
Cant touch this-MChammer
Ice, Ice, baby- Vanilla Ice

All great songs, with creativity, simple, less explecit.

Now it's like "SHAKE IT" BLEEP BLEEP (not cussing but using sexual words)

Agree. Today's hip hop/rap is horrible and the videos are just as bad as the songs.

Though MTV2 airs an hour dedicated to early hip hop & R&B videos (Mid 1980's to mid 1990's) called "Old School Hip Hop" that play great songs/videos from LL Cool J, Run DMC, Salt N' Pepa, EPMD, Public Enemy, Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock, Biz Markie, etc sometimes.

Young MC's "Bust A Move" is 100 x's better than any junk from Nelly or 50 Cent.  8)

Your post made me laugh muchly. First off, I don't in a million years consider Vanilla Ice rap! He was (much like Eminem, who I can sort of tolerate), a white boy novelty. Nothing more. Second of all, the Digital Underground song was NOT called "Humpty Dumpty". Anyone who truly appreciates old school rap and hip-hop knows it's called the "Humpty DANCE". That said, Kris Kross was just another boy band/duo/group and MC Hammer was famous for maybe three or four songs.

And the song you bleeped out is called "Shake Ya Tailfeather"....not really sexual considering Ike and Tina Turner sang it back in the 60's when everything was more censored. ::)

Music Changes with new generations of people, you can't stop it. There will always be people who like/don't like it.

Yeah, that's what hiphop needs, all right.  More dancing.

Creativity my @ss!!  MC Hammer just stole the memorable riff from RICK JAMES "SUPERFREAK"  and Vanilla Ice stole the riffQUEEN/DAVID BOWIE "UNDER PRESSURE."   I hated how they slaughtered those cool old songs and slapped their name on it.

These are blatent examples of sampling and thats what Ive always despised about rap/hip hop.  Most but not all of these 'artists' dont have the talent to come up with their own beats so they use someone elses (often without permission).  Hell Puff Daddy or whatever the hell he calls himself now has formed his entire career over cannibalizing someone elses songs.  Thats why I feel rap/hip hop is an inferior artform.

I like Vanilla Ice, dude could dance (eminem can't), also MC Hammer, dude could dance, also de la Soul, Malcom McClaren (The World Famous- excelente), Kid n Play, 2 live crew, rap was great back 10 years or so.

There are plenty of MCs out there who are just as good if not better than any of the old school MCs. Whoever thinks that Biz Markie is a better lyricist than Jay Z should have their head checked.

Don't mean to offend anyone, and apologize up front if so.
But I feel this needs to be said..
I've seen quite a few topics and threads on how the 90's are better in everyway than the 00's.
Thats well and good, and everyone are entitled to their opinon, thats what this messageboard is here for..
But I have to wonder, as I've seen in other posts, if one dosen't like todays rap or hip/hop, TV, sports, clothing, etc., then what is it that you do like of the 2000's? Why are you here, now?
You have to listen to todays music, and watch current TV/sports and other forms of media that is out today, to be able to have an opinion and dislike them...
So, it seems to me that if I disliked everything about the current era, then my current life would be pretty poor, don't know why to get up in the morning. I could understand this mindset if someone were a 80 yr old hemit or curmudgeon and closed off from the world and society, and I can understand liking one era more than the other..
But, surely, the current era isn't that bad..I know there are terrible things happening today, thats life, sad to say. Each era has its trials and tribulations, and it always seems worse than before.

If the current time/era is that bad, then I strongly suggest to go out, & get out there and find a meduim of interest, a form of media/music that is new or unexplored by you and that is likable and entertaining. Life is what you make it.
It sounds so negitive (and tiring) to hear "the (fill in the blank) was better in the 90's & everything sucks now", as I know there are good examples (as some have already stated) that this is not true.
IMHO I happen to like the 70's just a little better than the 80's, the 80's a little bit more than the 90's & so on. But I wouldn't ever dare say that all music from one era is better or worse than another.
Theres such a thing as context and perspective that needs to be used before you judge.
There is plenty of creativity in todays music and videos (that dosen't mean you have to like it or that its good to you) you just have to really open you eyes to everthing thats out there and take off the rose-colored glasses of the past.

I'll admit that Missy Elliott's music videos are creative and unique. :)  Though I don't care for her music.

00s aint that bad, as I say it is...

If u look at everthing positively...it all makes sense.

WE have great shows like 70s show, King of Queens, etc.

50 cent, eminem, Jay-Z, all have great beats and creative lyrics.

There are also other hip hopsters that actually rap and diss the new school.

Our fashion aint that bad,,, actualy its pretty nice, fades jeans...cool.cool..

All in all, its how u look at it....The grass is greener on the other side...the 90s ppl probably looked at the 80s...th e80s ppl probably looked at the 70s...

ITS ALL IN OUR HEADS...but seriously some of todays pop gotta change.

I like Nas. I think he's a good rapper. He doesn't talk about what the other rappers talk about(women, money.)

I just have a problem with people like Nelly, and Ja-Rule. Its pop and its not real rap. People say its a new generation of music. Ahhh The rap video's are terrible.

I like Noreaga but they don't get that much airplay. I also like Mobb Depp but thats another group that don't get airplay. What about Twab Kweli? He's good too. The problem is we are not hearing pure hip-hop. People have to know what real hip-hop is and they just don't know.

Mc Hammer and Vanilla Ice are not real rap. Thats just pop. That was good and happening when I was 11 years old in 1990 but it was time to move on.

I still feel the old school was better cause you didn't have much cursing in the lyrics. :D

The artists or groups you mentioned were all light, fluffy pop rappers from the late 80's or early 1990's.  There were plenty of gangsta stuff from that time that people considered obsecene.....

like Ice-T, Ice Cube, 2 Live Crew, Public Enemey, NWA, and ofcourse 2pac.

Comparing stupid stuff like M.C. Hammer or Vanilla Ice to real rappers is like comparing a goofy mainstream pop hair metal act like Bon Jovi to something much more hardcore like Quiet Riot, RATT, Judas Priest, or Ozzy back when he was a bad a** crazy evil man and not a blubering middle aged father.

Old School Rap will always rule LL Cool J,3rd Bass,EPMD, etc etc.Rap stopped being fun in the mid 90s because everyone went gangsta even Hammer tried being "gangsta".Todays rap is God Awful most the time the rapper is off beat with the music.I do like DMX and loved Eminems rhymes in 8 mile LMAO!Rappers did better jobs sampling in the old school days.Today theres no song that can be sampled when Jay Z did "Hard Knocks Life"from Annie I was like you gotta be kidding ::)I m sure they kind find a way to sample a country  song next ::).Im so sick of the videos too its the same thing over and over.Makes me crave Tone-Locs low budget videos LOL!

I wondered why every Rap star turned "gangsta"? was it because of the influence of drugs, violence, nudity"? ???

I agree that rap today is all about the same thing ( girls, money, jewelry and rims, etc). It's now of form of advertising rather than the creativeness. It's about the throwbacks, caps and shoes than the lyrics.

That's why I like Jay-Z, Nas and Mos Def because they take it beyond all the superficial, materialistic things. sure they do occasionally but it's not every song. They rap about what's real, stuff that matters rather than the lame lyrics by Nelly, Chingy, Murphy Lee, etc, as far as i'm concern they could fall of the face of the earth and I wouldnt care b/c they rap about the same stupid stuff. But hey, it must be doing them justice cause they got good sales. Why change a good thing.

I don't know where you're from but that was one of the best songs by Jay-Z. Although i do agree with you, I am tired of rap songs using samples. It was cool at first but now it's making me sick.

Ugh! I can't say how much I hate today's rap. I don't know why people like it so much. Today when I was in school and in Social Studies class there was G-Unit written all over the desk I was sitting in.
It also said 50 Cent, Sean Paul, and Chingy on it.

anyway, here's my list of the worst rappers of today.

5. New Snoop Dogg, I like his old music better, like "Doggystyle" or "Nothing but a G' Thang" (which was a duet with Dr.Dre)
4.50 Cent- One of the examples of bad rap today. When he sang the chorus to "P.I.M.P" he sounded horrible.
3. Ja Rule- I hate him as much as other people who like rap hate him.
2.Nelly-I have no Idea what "Yo Street in a Range Rover" means (Which is what he said in "Country Grammar").
1. Chingy-I just hate that song "Right Thurr" .Who taught him how to spell anyway?

the Roots

I agree with NASCARnut.  I like those few artists.

I grew up on OLD SCHOOL rap.  I remember when MCs would actually "battle".  These artists of today...lol...have prewritten rhymes.  If you ask them to freestyle they would probably sh%t their pants.

Today the videos are horrible and sooooooo predictable...booty poppin bimbos...$100,000 cars...the mansions...palm trees...bling bling...champagne...etc...

It cracks me up because these guys want these stripper/model-esque women when they aren't exactly male models themselves...  In fact, most of these performers have been struck with the ugly stick.  LOL ::)

LOFL!  You got to be kidding.  MC Hammer was a joke, Vanilla Ice was a big joke.  Kris Kross was ok they did try to start a trend, and Digital Underground was cool.  But those were just dance songs.  If you want to talk about rhyming try Biz Markie, Grand Master Flash, Doug E Fresh, KRS One, LL Cool J, etc.

Want some old school?  Try.....
