Subject: Will humanity ever conquer obesity?

Written By: AndrewTalkingWalnut on 01/20/04 at 03:08 p.m.

I am trying to loose weight, I am fairly attractive, but if I lost say 100 pounds, my face would be thinner, and I would really be a hunk,

I wonder, when will science find a way for all of us to be thin, and have an ideal Metabolism?
 Diets are a real pain.

Who knows?  Maybe someday there will be a "pill" that increases metabolism.  To date, no such a thing has been produced, despite all those ads you see on TV.

And if a weight loss program involves just a "crash diet", that will SLOW DOWN the metabolism and is counterproductive.  CRASH DIET is about the worst thing you can do to lose weight.

The general concensus of doctors (who are not into selling weight-loss secrets) is a program that comprises:

-Restrict calorie intake to a REASONABLE level (like 1500-2000 calories per day, not a "starvation diet")

-The calories be BALANCED amongst protein, carbos, veggies, and fats.  Not an "all protein" or "all carbo" proposition, but balance.

-Reasonable exercise progam.  I "think" they call for 20 minutes per day at the "target heart rate" (ie you at least break a little sweat)

-(My recommendation): You gotta write down what you eat.  It is amazing by how much you can blow the "calorie budget" with some of the munchies they seel these days.  :P

From my experience the biggest hurdle to all of this is getting a "jump start" on it.  I have been most successful when I did it with a friend, and by-and-large the habits that I learned have stuck.  :)

If you want to lose 100lb, why not ask your doctor if there is a REPUTABLE weight-loss group in your town, and find a "buddy" to team up on the project?  :D

That's the problem right there.  Society is looking for the "magic pill solution".

Too much "up-sizing" and "biggie-sizing" in the food industry, both in fast food and "health" (have you seen the size of some of those muffins??  :o).  To top it all off, we seem to equate quantity/size with value.  Yer basic example of mindless-consumerism.  And my friends give me a hard time when I don't pay the extra 25 cents to double the size of my Coca-Cola.  I tell them I have to save the cash they want to borrow off me in 20 years so that they can buy their insulin.   ;)

Gotta secret for ya: be skeptical of what they put in your food (especially those "diet" or "light" labels), don't eat until you're full, and be active.

One other secret... eat SLOWLY.  The slower you eat, the more "full" you will feel, and you tend to eat less.

That's true!  We, as North Americans, quite literally gobble our food like a pack of sloven wolves... and that's probably insulting the wolves!  :D.  Anyways, i've known many people who travel abroad, and i'm told that in some nations they eat at a very leisurely pace.  Where we'll chow down a complete meal in 30 minutes or so, they'll take twice that at least.

The reason for that is were just plain hungry like dogs.We see food ,we just come running and we gobble our food down like it's our last meal on earth.I get that sometimes. ;D

:oAs someone who has a weight problem, I have a constant battle against temptation daily. Believe me,food addiction(yes there's such a thing)is darn HARD to deal with. It took Type II Diabetes to break me away from sugary stuff. I NEVER feel full. It's as if I'm a bottomless pit! This is hard to admit, but I'm 5'6 1/2 and weigh over 300 pounds. A lot of the overeating issue for me is beating myself up for being a differently-abled person. It's hard to feel good about myself when society puts down people like me. But thru counseling,I'm trying to think better about myself. 8)
