Well, I wondered when it was going to happen here:

I'm an avid Kazaa user, and I have mixed feelings about this.

I use Kazza on a daily basis too, but I don't have many files compared to some of the people I know. I state this in every thread regarding Kazaa:

I have 650 music files on Kazaa, BUT consider this:

- 50% of my files are of music tracks that belong to CDs I've ALREADY BOUGHT. I just find it easy to play the song using Kazaa, rather then find the CD.

- 30% are music files where either they aren't on CDs (eg. Muppet quotes, Canadian TV show themes, Monty Python audio clips from movies, etc.) or I don't know where to buy them because this possible CD is hard to find.

So this means only 20% of my 650 files are "illegal".

And, isn't the CRIA before the Supreme Court trying to get a tax on all ISPs? I think they are trying to look more powerful than they really are. I've also heard it would be more difficult to prosecute in Canadian courts because our copyright laws are a bit weaker than the USA's.

Meh..

I have about 400-500 files on Kazaa. Almost all of them are pop videos. Is that illegal?   ???

Videos?  Jeez, i've been trying to collect various 80's vids for a while now.  I have about 30 or so, I should get a list off ya sometime.

I have 445 songs shared.  141 are songs off CD's I own (which I want to rerecord at a higher bit-rate.  I use 192 kbs right now).  The rest are from bands whose names i'm probably keeping alive by sharing their old music!  All but 30 or so are 80's pop songs.  Although I have entire CD's on share, I have yet to see anyone download the whole lot.  They were picking out what they liked.

I don't think they can go after someone for having music videos.  As far as I know, they don't sell them like they do CD's so I guess they can't argue loss of income.  When you think about it, by sharing videos we're doing some advertising for them.    ;)

I may have to hide my files from others to reduce my exposure.. I hate to do it, as I have searched other people when they are downloading off of me and have found several hard to find songs that way.  In fact, last night I had a guy leech 30 or so songs off me, and popped me a message thanking me for the songs by "The Box" (Canadian pop band out of Quebec).  Of all the songs I share I get more messages about that band than all the others combined.  Many of them stated they simply can't find their CD's anywhere.  The guy last night had one of their old tapes and accidentally got it chewed up in his player a few nights before.  His girlfriend was pretty pi$$ed off with him and now his a$$ is saved!  ;D

According to CRIA, sales of compact discs in Canada have fallen by $450-million, or 23%, since 1999.

I wonder if the quality of the music released over the last five years has contributed to this?

No wait, it has  >:(
This is the main reason why the cd sales have dropped. You will find that over 50% of kazaa users only share the cds they have bought themselves...

That's like letting John Wayne Gacy off the hook because some of the dead bodies found in his crawlspace were killed by him in an act of self-defense.  "Hey, I really only murdered 20 of them...cut me some slack here..."

What, only "a little bit guilty" ;-)

Currently I have about 3GB in >1k files - and with the exception of a handful I've downloaded to check (or sometimes write) parodies, they're nearly all songs I've got on vinyl.  I bet it wouldn't take many cases against people like me for them to decide it was too costly a business...

There's also a few that I downloaded, listened to then bought the CDs (Nickelback, for example)

The rest are things I've never seen for sale anywhere (lots of obscure comedy stuff).

Yeah. They should pay us not sue us.  ;D

Give me a message of the videos you want and I will tell you if I have them or not.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but anyone into the P2P filesharing networks (KaZaA, E-Mule, etc..) may want to check out this message board dedicated to it:

You have to register first.

Yet another set back for CRIA, albeit a temporary one.  Keep your fingers crossed.
