Subject: The future of Space exploration...
How further do you think we should continue to go with Space exploration?
Is it all really worth it/necessary?
Subject: Re: The future of Space exploration...
Yeah I would love to be alive when we explore outer space with Space ships but I'll be dead by that time.Hopefully we could colonize other planets?

Personally, I would like to see much of that money spent here at home. Here in the US, we don't take very good care of our elderly. They deserve a lot more than they are getting in the way of health care and social security.

You make a good point, Gamblefish. Although, I wouldn't mind living to see man walk on Mars.

Man do I have mixed feelings about this..pardon me while add my two cents..
I, more that anyone, have always wanted to see man walk on other planets, watched & read enough sci-fi to dream the dream, and we're more capable now to actually make the journey (although it would still be a very long trip)..
But once I look around to all the disorder and chaos of the present time and place, I really think we need to focus on our problems and issues on this blue planet (while it's still blue) first.
I hate to say it, but man has a terrible history when it comes to exploration and the resulting explotation..ask the Incas or Aztecs what they thought about the Spainards exploring, and then "discovering" their land and the destruction, disese & slavery thereafter..ditto Columbus & native Americans.
It would be awful to see Mars or other planets spoiled by the greed and ignorace of man..what will hapeen if we colonize?
Will we savor the natural wonder of it all or start raping the land, pave it over and put up a Starbucks/Kinko's/Domino's at the fist chance? Are we going to argue over land (as man has always and still does today), which country gets what part of Mars? Instead of WWIII, do we have Mars WarI?
I guess the question should be..Does man have the right to explore? And what does he do thereafter?

Oh heck! I love sci-fi and the whole Star Trek idea of "Space, The Final Frontier..." sounds very cool.
However, I find myself agreeing here with gumbypiz.

Another point -
I was thinking about how much man has helped in the deterioration of our planet, not considering the natural planetary deterioration already in progress caused by the planet's own elements.
I initially thought that it would be a good idea to have somewhere to go, perhaps Mars, in the case of Earth becoming inadequate to sustain life.
As far as nature goes, Ice ages wiped away much of Earth's life in the past. That's just one single example.
As far as humans go, the destruction of trees, animal life, environment, pollution, overuse of natural resources, wars...; Earth's deterioration is positively much more accelerated due to these factors.
Then I wondered whether we humans even deserve to escape to a new world without having cared for the one we currently have.
Surely history would repeat itself as it almost always does.
In my opinion, most humans find it difficult to learn from mistakes.

Good Point.

Use the money to educate the people who live on this planet!

Already happened. On Mars there are a couple hundred kilograms of junk already on it's surface in the form of dead exploratory craft. Not to mention the radioactive waste left there by the Viking spacecraft of the 70's. Only the outer planets are 'clean' -- so far. Hmm.. I just had a thought, maybe aliens have been here after all, they just cleaned up after themselves when they left. ;)
Want a peek at a likely possibility if attitudes aren't changed? Look to the garbage on Mt.Everest.

Ever watch any of the Star Trek shows.
Personally, with the economic situation being unbearable in America, our Government should spend more money on Helping the Less Fortunate, not on Space Probes or Junk like that.
