Subject: What's the opinion on Howard Dean?
With this being the year of the US elections I was wondering what the general feeling is about Howard Dean the apparent Democratic front runner.
I checked out his web site and he sounds like a centre-right canidate (from a Canadian stand point) but what's the opinion of him the the US of A? Too left? not strong enough? not enough $$?
Subject: Re: What's the opinion on Howard Dean?
Don't think Dean has what is needed to beat Bush.
He has enough $$, but I don't think that is the issue..just don't think he has the following of enough of the voting public (democrats or otherwise)...democrats don't seem to really have their act together yet.
If the job situation gets worse in the major voting states, & more of our soilders continue to die in Iraq, that could change however and Bush's latest proposals on imagration has seemed to anger his own party.
We'll have to wait and see.
By the by, I'm not a dem or a GOP supporter (and proud to vote independent).

From another Canadian viewpoint, Dean seems to be on the right side fringes of Liberalism. He says he wants a balanced budget. For this reason, Conker, I think Dean and P. Martin would get along very well.

I think Howard Dean is ok-not the greatest but I think he would do a good job. Looking at his record as governor, he has balenced the budget, made sure that every kid under 18 has health insurence as well as some low income adults. He is not as far to left as most people think. He is a fiscal conservative actually. He is also pro-gun as well as pro-choice. But, because the U.S. is so used to the far right that is in power now, anything close to the center seems to the far left. He is really not afraid of calling a spade a spade. Unfortunately, some people don't like that-the fact that he is calling it like it is. Haven't decided if that is good or bad. As far as politicians go, I think he is more honest the rest. When he first started running, I wasn't too sure if I was going to vote for him or not. It depended on who else was running. At this point, he is going to get my vote-mainly because of the others who are running. Many of the others who are running on the Dem ticket, voted for some of the things that I disagree with-the tax cuts for the rich and the war in Iraq. I did have a chance of meeting him a few years ago before I made my choice. As I was leaving, I told him good-luck with the campaign. When I turned away, I said "you are going to need it." Don't know if he heard me or not.

He just lost at least one vote...and since this is a big news item, probably hundreds.
Voter criticizes Dean
...so Dean tells him to sit down and shut up. REEEEEEEALLY presidential there.

I love how he's sabataging his own political chances.....some of the things he says..I wonder if he realizes hes running for president.......

um... where did he tell him to shut up? In those forums, you get to ask your question, and not continue your own mini-debate with the candidate when he responds. Sounds like the person asking the question was out of line more than Dean was.

(Disclosure: I tend to be a Republican)
Originally, Dean impressed me because he was not afraid to say what was on his mind. But as the campaign has progressed, it does not seem that he has "what it takes" to win a national election.
He will not be able to control his temper
He blew it when the "race card" was played yesterday. He weaseled out, then Sharpton took him to the mat and he had to admit that in 12 years as Vermont governor, his entire cabinet was 100% white.
He should stop whining wbout the other Democrat candidates that are attacking him. Attacks are what happen in campaigns. If he thinks the Dems are tough, what does he think the Repubs will do?
Hypocrisy about his sealed records from the Governor days
The "Bush is not my neighbor" remark is going to get him the nickname "Mean Dean"
His "gay union" stance will cost him votes from mainstream democrats.
The Republicans cannot wait for this guy to get nominated, because he will not hold up to the pressure of a campaign in the "big leagues". It would be a collosal defeat of the Dems if they nominate this guy.

I mistyped, and I understand the forum rules, but what I meant is that while the voter was being confrontational, Dean was not at all political about telling him to sit down and essentially shut up.

I agree 100%.
Dean is more of a side-show act than anything lately.
He is suffering from a major case of "foot-in-mouth" nearly every time he speaks in public. His past is catching up to him, and he has a major anger management problem. If he can't control himself in a simple debate, how will he react dealing with national and international issues? I hope we never have to find out, personally, I don't think we will, thank goodness.
Subject: Re: What's the opinion on Howard Dean?
I think he's nut. A psycho nut.
Subject: Re: What's the opinion on Howard Dean?
Even some of his Democratic cohorts would call him a flamer. Dean has already lost most of his lead since Al Gore endorsed him and Saddam's capture. Still Dick Gephart and not Joe Leiberman could be his closest competior for the Presidental nomination.

My View of Howard Dean,
I guess he's OK

Does anyone think Howard Dean is too Left-Wing

You are right, here. When this happened, I saw "self destruct" written all over it. It made him look like a whiner, not a very good move.

This will stick with him throughout the election, I'm afraid.
Subject: Re: What's the opinion on Howard Dean?
I'm not a big political person, but I know some of the stuff...and to put things short, I'm not crazy about Bush but I like Bush a heckuva lot better than Dean.
Oh so many reasons...
Subject: Re: What's the opinion on Howard Dean?
This is an interesting discussion not so much on whether or not people will vote for Dean or if he's got an anger management problem etc but to see the divide between Canadian and American opinions on some things.
He seems so far left in the US and centre or centre Right (a red Tory?) in Canada.
Thanks for the comments
