This is not the first town to do a law like this.  I know that there is a town in Texas that also did this about 10 years ago.

And in reality, it is not all that new.  In the middle ages, a lot of counties in England required that once a year all men appear in the village square with a functioning long bow, and show that they knew how to use it.

I can even justify this, in the Constitution.  Don;t forget that in the 2nd Ammendment it talks about a "well regulated militia".  Since this is a remote area with no Police Force, it makes sense that they would want their people semi self-sufficient until help arrived.

Also notice that it is easy to refuse to follow the law.  I think it is mostly just a statement.  I support such actions myself, they make more sense to me then those that try to remove guns from the citizens, ensuring that only criminals have guns.

Dissenters only need to pay a periodic $10 "anti-gun tax" :D

Nothing wrong with this law.  There's a similar one in Montana I believe.  Lowest crime rate in the USA if I remember correctly.  Of course, it's a smaller town of a few thousand.  A law like this wouldn't work in major metropolitan areas like L.A. or Miami... but then, people carry guns there all the time anyways!  :)

Safety handling and storage education, and criminal background checks... not banishment is the answer.
