Subject: Australian Idol
This topic is for the Aussies - what do you think of Guy winning Australian Idol? Did the best man win?
What are your thoughts BrianMannixGirl?
Guy has a great voice, but I prefer Shannon's rock style over Guy's RnB. What does everyone think?
Subject: Re: Australian Idol
Well the final decision was pretty predictable unfortunately.
My personal fave thru the entire series was Paulini. But out of the boys I loved Millsy (for his sheer luv of life and the way he could connect with a camera) and Shannon for the same reason as Dicko - we are starting to lack the sound of the great Aussie rock voice. There are too many wimpy lads out there in the charts - we need some boys that look like men.
I dont doubt that Guy is talented. But I feel he needs to respect the singer songwriter a bit more. He goes so far off the beaten track when he does a cover that he may as well have not even started with a cover.
Shannon sung the songs the way we wanted to hear them. And boy oh boy oh boy does he scrub up nicely in a suit. Plus he is just a humble hard workin lad. Whats not to like.
Guy rarely looked like he put any effort into dressing - just put on the first thing he pulled out of the bottom of the dirty clothes hamper. And the only way to achieve an afro like that without a perm - is to not wash your hair for 6 months - so imagine what he smells like up close ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
As far as singing and World Idol goes. I wanted someone who could represent the quintessential Aussie. To me Guy could be from anywhere - his "style" (if you can call messy unmatched clothing a style) doesnt scream Aus. His sound doesnt scream Aus. And the Afro just screams Michael Jackson circa 1976 - certainly not Aus.
I certainly wont be paying money to listen to him either on CD or live. But I would definately fork out $$ to see Paulini or Shannon or Courtney Act for that matter - now there is a star !!.
Now I am about to go against my own grain here as I generally hate the release of classic covers. I feel What About Me is in the top ten of all time greatest Aus rock classics. Ordinarily I would kill the first person who came along and covered it.
BUT
I would buy Shannons version tomorrow. So I sure hope its his first release.
Gecko - have you seen the line up on ten next year ? We have US Idol 3, new Big Brother, new Aus Idol 2, new all kinds of reality delights - sigh - I wont need to leave the house !!!! And 7 is biting back with Popstars again.
Subject: Re: Australian Idol
I agree with you on so many things here (what a surprise :D).
First - if we wanted an AUSSIE Idol, Shannon was it. A laid back country boy, "G'day Mate" sort of fella. He sounds like a classic Aussie rocker. The sort of guy to go and have a beer with!!! I don't think you could pick a better Aussie Idol. And you are sooooooo right - he does scrub up all right in those suits (but what about the sleeveless tight t's and ripped jeans :-*- that wasn't bad either!)
I have always loved "What About Me" - one of my fav songs, but you are right again - Shannon's version rocked. I would buy a cd by him anyday. I also preferred his version of the new single Angels - do you like the new song BMG?
I never liked Paulini (she liked herself enough) but I did like Cosima. Sorry, BMG, but Millsy didn't do much for me either.
I had a bet at work with one of the guys that Shannon would win - I now have to buy him smoko for the rest of the week :P.

They have an Australian Idol too? I hate this Idol crap. ::)

You know what? I'm a rock fan first and foremost, but I completely disagree with you here. Shannon's voice was ordinary at best, he rarely chose a song that suited his limited range, he had minimal to no stage presence and he sang everything like he was a karaoke singer. His best stage move was jumping up and down when he did that Powderfinger song. He started 'Living On A Prayer' in the wrong key (flat), and 'What About Me' was done in a mumbly monotone. He should have been voted off months ago. As for Guy, well, he knows how to work a stage, he has a fantastic voice that could suit just about any style and because he is also a musician and songwriter himself he knew exactly which songs to pick. As for re-arranging the ones he did, to me, that's a sign of true talent. John Farnham and Frank Sinatra used to arrange the songs they sing/sang to suit their style, and I'll brook no argument about how talented they are/were.
So there.

So Goreripper - you didn't like Shannon. That's fine, I was just wondering who you thought the final two should have been. Who do you think the two most talented singers were - Guy and who?

I don't hate these programs, so much as not seeing the point. Kevin Bloody Wilson is MY Australian idol, I'd like to see him in a sing-off with Rolf Harris & Barry Humphries. 'Twould knock this namby-pamby teenager-funded idolatry into touch, it would... :o

While I dont like the actual format of Idol and the ilk - the whole "we'll be back after three more breaks to see who goes into the next round etc". I see no prolem whatsoever with shows that help find talent out there who we wouldnt ordinarily encounter.
We havent had Young Talent Times and Star Searches around for years and years. Where else are people supposed to get themselves seen and heard.
Gecko - I think a lot of Paulini's comments came out wrong. Mostly thru nervousness and being put on the spot for statements etc. Plus I also think there isnt much wrong with admitting you are talented at something. We all have to do it in job applications so whats wrong with someone saying "I have a good voice" - its no different to me saying "actually I have a seriously crap voice" !!! ;D
Fred - dont know where you are from - but you may not have noticed that Idol is a world wide thing. Hence the fact that the next one is called "World Idol".
Gore - I have been quite open thru the comp about the fact that Shannon doesnt have the greatest voice in the world. I imagine he sounds much better on stage in a pub or at the B&S Ball than trying to do Sinatra and The Beatles in front of a TV studio audience.
But on a personal note I would rather look and listen to him do some good ole ocker rock - than watching a dirty unkempt badly dressed gollywog play bad vocal acrobatics with the classics.
Probably explains why Jimmy Barnes can outsell Lenny Kravitz any day !!
I cant wait to see next years Idol - who else can we uncover ?

Yes I know Idol is a world wide thing. It started in England then America, and so on. I'm from Canada btw.

What Gore said ^^ :o
Although now that Guy is complaining about the lack of privacy I am wondering what sort of naive boy he is. What on earth did he expect. The media created him and now they'll get their pound of flesh while it's still fresh!

Paulini. She has a voice like a skyscraper.
In any case, it won't matter who's won. Does anyone remember Bardot, Scandul'us, Selwyn, anyone who's ever won a TV talent quest?
Subject: Re: Australian Idol
I would have to agree with you there Gore.
Thats why I was amazed that the contract BMG has signed with Guy is a 5 cd contract. At a standard rate of say 1 cd release every 18 months or so they will own him for up to ten years. And based on standard "pay back" deals in most contracts - guy wont start making a cent personally until the 3rd cd sells double platinum (140,000).
Based on his current sales of the drippy single - 25000 cut - 7500 sold - its gunna be a long ten years.
And they are putting an awful lot of faith in a "reality tv" find when recent history proves them to be hasbeens after the first single.
On a brighter note - hey Gecko - Shannon releases What About Me on Australia Day. Heard it from a friend whose agent does a bit of PA for BMG.
bwhahahahaha I have only just realised BMG is what you gys call me for short !!!!!! I didnt know I was a record coy !!

Excellent! I will be buying it - as I have said, I have always loved that song, and I LOVE his version.
This is going to sound sad, but the whole time they kept talking about BMG - I kept thinking of you BrianMannixGirl. I always call you BMG for short, and you're the first thing I thought of !!! ;D
Subject: Re: Australian Idol
hahahahaha thats so funny Gecko - It took me all this time to spot it !!!
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOh - Maybe I am actually Dicko in disguise !!
I have to admit - a guy at work has a poster advertising a local band (I think thats what its advertising anyway) called Gecko and when ever I walk past it I think "oooh must log on and see what gecko has been up to !"..
Subject: Re: Australian Idol
That's pretty funny - but I think it just means that we're both kinda sad BMG! ::) ;)
