Subject: Dale Earnhardt 1951-2001

Written By: NASCARnut on 11/18/03 at 07:31 p.m.

:'(Where were you when NASCAR's 7-time champion,DALE EARNHARDT,was killed on the last lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001? :'( :'(I was in the hospital with pneumonia.too sick to watch the race. I think that it's a good thing I didn't watch it,I was a HUGE fan of the man in the black #3 Chevy,it would have made me more depressed. Earnhardt earned that "Intimidator"nickname by being a hard-as-nails,nitty gritty, down n' dirty RACER!! That's how he won the Winston Cup SEVEN times. He also used head games with other drivers, psyching them out and capitalizing on their mistakes. You either loved or hated Earnhardt-I chose to be 'forever a fan'!  8)

Not being an avid race fan, don't know the whole story, but heard someone caused him to crash. Apparently, Dale was carrying out strategy to boost his team forward, and the opposition tried to stop their plan.  Can you explain what happened in the race?

He was doing a lot of blocking while Dale Jr. and Michael Waltrip were racing in front of him.  There was some contact between Dale Sr. and Sterling Marlin which did cause his head-on collision with the wall.

I was watching the race when it happened, but I had no idea that it was a fatal crash at the time.  No one really did I don't think.  About an hour later as I was cooking dinner, my best friend called me and said she heard on the radio that he died.  I couldnt believe it!

I'm a Jeff Gordon fan, never really rooted for Dale, but this was a terrible thing and I personally don't think racing has been the same since.

Tony Stewart (#20 Home Depot Pontiac)wrecked the same day,but basically got out unharmed. Daytona, like the track at Talladega,Alabama,is known for huge wrecks, aka "TBO"(The Big One)which some fans LOVE to see.Saw Tony Stewart on TV last night,he thinks it's awful that fans want drivers to wreck!
