Subject: Ted Kennedy wants to ban plastic guns
Recently I went to Toys R Us to buy a toy rifle for my nephew's birthday which he really wanted, and was shocked when they told me they no longer carry toy guns because of "Political Correctness" and "Security" issues (and I quote) ::)
Has this gone too far?
Heres a related article:

To quote my uncle:
"If you take little boys' toy guns away, they'll pretend to shoot each other with sticks. If you take the sticks away, they'll use their hands."

I have two sons: the elder one has no real interest in guns, swords, fighting (ball games, now that's another matter); his younger brother was making a gun shape with his fingers and going "Peow" before the age of two, and when he found the only toy gun in the house (from a fancy dress party), he was in seventh heaven.
The desire to go round shooting things obviously can be innate - though I'd love to know where he got some of the imagery from: somewhere between 18months and 2years old he picked up the gun shape and the noise it makes, but it's not immediately apparent from what source.
...though it can also be learned: my youngest child now goes round shooting things with her elder brother- but only when playing with him.

I think that it is a good idea for the purposes mentioned in the article. Some of those plastic guns can look pretty real, pilots or attendants might not be able to tell that it is a fake gun.

We aren't allowed to carry anything on campus that remotely looks like a gun.
"What about brightly colored plastic super-soakers?"
Nope.
"Man! How are we supposed to have wet tee-shirt contests!?"
I don't know... I just don't know...

I remember reading an article about a 7th grader suspended from school for holding a chicken wing in a fashion of holding a gun and pretending to shoot a class mate....this is going too far.....
banning toy guns is kinda going too far as well, but I have no problem with putting those orange or red tips on the end to mark them as toys...

Perhaps... But was that chicken loaded? "Unloaded" chickens kill more people each year then loaded ones. I have vowed to keep chickens out of my home, and if/when children I might have want to visit a friends home I will make certain there chicken free as well. ;) ;D

And some liberal or women's group will call Ted Kennedy a genius. This is just typical politics rearing its ugly head. If you don't want toy guns for your kids, then don't buy them. Parents need to be the boss to children, and a lot of them have cooly pushed that responsibilty away.

I remember all the guns I got to play with as a kid, it's so strange to think that most of them don't exist today. Yep, we used sticks as guns, made guns out of wood scraps, it was all in fun. I think it very fortunate that I got to be a kid through the 70's, we had a lot more freedom to be a child back then.

I like that saying! That's a good one. :) Meanwhile, they allow violent video games and promiscuous preteens on tv/commercials. Go figure, eh. ???

Violent video games do not make people serial killers. >:(
Like almost every parent thinks. ::) I have been playing "violent" games, and watching movies strictly for many years now. And I think that it is the parents responsibility for letting kids play these games. Why don't they just play it themselves to see how "violent" they really are.

Less guns of any sort is a good thing. I do agree with banning plastic guns that look similar to real ones. However, banning colourful water guns and kid dart guns (the ones with the suction cups at the end) that do not look like a real gun should continue being produced.
