Subject: Too Rich, Too Soon

Written By: Indy Gent on 10/13/03 at 03:03 p.m.

The Olson Twins, the Hilton Sisters, the Culkins. These are examples of young people who were either born to wealthy parents or earned lots of money through acting or other forms of entertainment. Nothing is said about their work with charity. Instead we see them as partygoing socialites or spoiled rich idiots. Should there be an age limit on when a child can be independent enough to deal with finances?

That is a tough question. Child actors have been fighting for a long time. In 1939, the Coogan Law went into effect. This stated that minor actors has to have 15% of their earnings set aside for when they hit majority (which is 18). Jackie Coogan who was a child actor in the 20s/30s, was part of the "Our Gang" group and made quite a bit of money (especially in those days) and his parents spent it all (about $4 million dollars).

However, I don't think it should be the kids who are at fault but the parents, not teaching their kids about the value of money, and the "right way to spend it. But when kids go out on their own for the first time, they tend to go a bit crazy. Look at any college dorm. I think if parents taught their kids to be responable-whether they are actors or not, I don't think we would have too much of the problem of young kids going crazy.

I think this raises a bigger question than just young people being wealthy, but anyone who aquires wealth without really earning it. A-list actors and actresses make 20 mil a picture and lets be honest, it's easy money.  I laugh at the stories of how they work so hard, heck if they think that was so hard I've got job in a salmon cannery in Alaska that has their name on it.  True money is made through hardwork, risk, and innovation, not with a starring role in a romantic comedy. True earned money creates real jobs for others, not a temporary position as bodyguard or personal hairstylist for J-Lo.  Since this money is not really earned they have no reality as to what money really it, if it comes easy to them then it should be that way for everyone.  This is what leads to their freaky politics.

I saw the Oprah show with these rich young bigwigs. The son of the Johnson & Johnson CEO made a video on how shallow his rich friends are. All they do is talk about their money and how rich they are. One of them even dissed his middle income ex-girlfriend.  >:(

The Hilton sisters tried to prove they had some experience  living out in the country when they visited the farm belonging to the ex wife and daughter of Lionel Richie. Yeah right. And their parents tried to tell us that these girls work hard. But we know what their working hard at. ::)

Next on the same show were newlyweds Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson (Homer's b@st@rd girl?). You know about the sham MTV series where they supposedly have the same domestic problems as people like us. Another clip also showed them attempting to fold clothes. No surprise, they suck at it. ;D

People who are rich and didn't earn it should just consider themselves fortunate and enjoy themselves.  I won't hold being honest against them, just don't try to convince me that they work hard and have humble wants and habits.

8) 8) 8)I don't see that the Olsens and hiltons have done anything wrong;they're doing all right to me.The culkins,on the other hand ,seem to be trying to be as wild as Princes william and Harry are made out to be.Cheers!

The point is, Marian, they're not doing anything that would be newsworthy, like speaking for world peace or giving anything to charity. It sounds like they just love the publicity, so they'll do anything to keep themselves in the spotlight. You are right in that they aren't doing anything wrong, just not ethical.

I give the Olsen twins credit...at least they work for it.Those Hilton sisters havent earned S**t!!!Why even give them attention if they did nothing to earn it?But since the media has nothing positive to talk about the put these brats on the cover of Newsweek?THEY ARE AIRHEADS WITH NO CHARACTER!Working gives you character and the sense of accomplishment. So I'll choose to work my butt off....hey I may never be famous for it but its the path I would rather take.

URL :o :o :o :Well actually what i meant is they may have enough money to buy drugs, have prostitutes, gamble and do other things associated with wild young people ,but they choose not to do these things.I saw them on Oprah;they don't seem to be the brightest bulbs in the lamp because they talk like stereotypical teenagers, but I don't think it makes them bad people.Cheers!

I guess I'm not aware of what charities the Hilton sisters are involved in.  Do they contribute to causes such as fighting cancer or cure for AIDS?  I'm not saying they don't but all I ever hear about them is that they know how to party it up on Sunset and Vegas...I guess some people find that fascinating. ::)

They absolutely used to! But they're getting better-looking as they get older, in my opinion.

I don't think they'll ever be considered beautiful though. Then again, by "People" magazine standards...

I don't have an issue so much with them being rich young, it's more that they're famous young and never have a normal childhood.  When do they get to just be kids if they have to start acting like grown-ups when they're that young?

I agree - there is a high chance of turning out somewhat, er, eccentric.

With Michael Jackson being possibly the most extreme case so far...

Incidentally, I was going to say I'd never heard of them, until I realized my daughter has been given a couple of their books... all about the twins' boyfriend troubles: wonderfully appropriate stuff for nine-year-olds :-(
