Subject: Germans Win World Cup; What's Next For Americans?
The German frauleins won the Womens' World Cup this afternoon, beating Sweden in overtime 2-1. (And I was pulling for Sweden, too. It was sad seeing them lose.) It looks like the current U.S. womens' team will be no more after the Olympics. Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, and Julie Foudy (among others) will retire following 2004. Will the U.S. return to their dominant position as the top ranked team in the world? Or will they be relegated to has-beens? And will the American men ever be a World Cup contender?

with the extreme popualrity (and profitibilty) of football (American version), basketball, and of course, baseball, World Cup takes a back seat in the grand scheme of American sports.
Americans just never fully adopted World Cup, and personally I don't think we ever will, or at least not at the level other countries have.
Personally, a World Cup game = nap time for me. :-X I just can't force myself to gain interest in it, especially when football and basketball are around.

Still, regardless of how you feel about the sport of soccer, you can't argue with the fact that the women's game is better than the men's game, and that the teams work very hard and have to run for more distance than the more popular American sports. (Baseball in the regular season after the NBA ends is nap time for me.) I hope the U.S. women do retain their top status after the superstars leave the sport.

I do agree with you on that..
Basebal regular season is boooooooring and NBA Post-season is the only time they seem to try.
But back to soccer, its not necessarily just my personal opinion about it, I think its a vast majority of Americans opinion, otherwise it would be more popular. I think a lot of Americans dismiss it because it is seen as European sport.
Personally, I just think its boring. :)

With respect 80sRocked, if "a lot of Americans dismiss it because it is seen as European sport"....if that is the best reason that can be found to support your theory, it speaks volumes.
But not about the game you are discussing.

I didn't mean anything disrespectful. I think you were reading too deep into the statement. Its nothing personal against Europeans or anything like that. :)
It was referring to our (Americans) stubbornness to sometimes accept things that we aren't used to. Nothing personal.
I guess I worded it wrong. But I couldn't think of another way to word it.
(sorry for getting off on a tangent, it wasn't intentional. So now, back to the topic)

My apologies 80sR, I was reading it incorrectly. Thank you for clarifying it.

The World Cup is the only time I watch football (soccer). It really is a big deal to countries like Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, Russia and especially England. Korea made their mark in the last one. The spectacle that is The World Cup is something quite amazing indeed.
80srocked, didn't you feel a little bit of pride when USA hosted World Cup 1994?

...we did?
I'm kidding of course. But honestly, I didn't have any interest in it whatsoever.

Sometimes, Bobby, I don't understand American football, especially how some referees are blind even with Instant Replay. :-/
