Subject: New Holidays!

Written By: DizzleJ on 09/07/03 at 09:08 p.m.

I'm all for it. I think we should celebrate every holiday, extravagantly and amazingly full of energy. Take Halloween for instance. On October 1st everyone should start thier decorating and decorate well! I think if we celebrate more holidays we will grow closer as a nation and happier! As, I said before, out here we celebrate holidays pretty well, but I would love to celebrate even more! Like when, it is Thanksgiving, spend tons of money on a huge feast, spend this time with family and friends! And the Day after put your Christmas lights and decorations up!!! ;D
I would love to see more holidays. Like since 9/11 is coming up, don't you think we should honor those who died, and make it a national holiday, similar to Veterans day? No, disrespect, but a special reverance of silence, spending time with loved ones, and most of all having pride in America for being strong in times of sorrow.

You know, we just need more!

I see some problems with this. First of all - i think people celebrate holidays enough as it is and anyone who chooses not to has every right not to. Also, people seem to get pretty stressed out about christmas shopping so if you made more holidays a really big deal that would add a lot more stress... and i think americans are some of the most stressed out people in the world already... at least among industrialized nations. Not everyone can aford to spend lots of money on holidays and we shouldn't be pressuring them to decrease their quality of life in order to be more patriotic. And there is a such thing as too much patriotism, its called jingoism and it causes nations to believe that they are so great that they have the right to invade whatever nation they want

People don't have to decorate a whole bunch or whatever, but there are lots of ways to celebrate holidays.  Like wearing green, or dressing up like a freak (if you're not one already).  On dump your significant jerk day, dump your significant jerk, on bubble wrap appreciation day, appreciate your buble wrap, on no homework day, don't do your homework!  It's easy!!

The problem with holidays is that they get so commericalized. Look at Christmas. There are stores that already have Christmas stuff up and just about everywhere have Halloween stuff out. I am deffinately for celebrating just about anything but, unfortunately in this day and age, it is to make a buck.

You are very pessimistic. You are one of those half empty kind of people aren't you? Who cares if holidays are more commericalized? What is so bad about that?? So you get to celebrate with more decorations, what is so bad about that. There is never a reason to dis Christmas.

What is the deal with you man?? You don't like holdays either?? Americans can be very un stressed out first of all. I don't know where you are, but people are very relaxed during holidays. That is the whole point, a break from boredom and tedium, with joy and celebration. You are also very pessimistic. You are also one of those half empty kind of people. Holidays are for fun. And I would say most people agree that holidays are fun times. What's the deal with your anti-patriotism setiment??

I agree with Catwoman but that is why I like Christmas and all those things - especially bonfire night!

I love the idea of having a lit Christmas tree in the front room with decorations. The rest of the year isn't as pretty so you have to take the opportunity.  :)

Whoops haven't stuck to topic, DizzleJ.

I think a national bouncy castle day would be brilliant! I love jumping on those things.  ;D

I don't know if you can create anymore holidays that will be celebrated by multiple nations.  I think we have all posible holidays without getting silly about it.

As for national holidays, it depends what country you live in, but I think in Canada, we have just enough holidays.  Adding new holidays will only take away from other ones.

my xmas tree is still up from 2001...or 2000.  i can't even remember anymore. ::)

in eighth grade, my law & government class celebrated "national colin powell appriciation day."  (don't ask, it delt with a wax museum...)  and almost every day in that class was the famous holiday "boxer died today." (think animal farm) ...man, that was a weird class.

How bout, Save your college mascot day, it would be an environmental type holiday, like at the Univ. of GA it's a bulldog, at U. of FL a gator, at MN a gopher, at U of IN a hoosier, what's a hoosier?

Uh, yeah.

I think when we put up all these decorations, and get stressed from holiday shopping, etc., we are forgetting the true meaning of Christmas.  Do you see more Santas and Rudolphs and snowmen in front yards or Baby Jesuses??

I do NOT agree with what you said: "That is the whole point, a break from boredom and tedium, with joy and celebration."  Um, I'm sorry, but we do not celebrate Christmas and Easter and Thanksgiving so we can relax.  I mean, it's okay to put up Christmas lights and Christmas trees and get together and celebrate, et cetra.  I have no problem with that whatsoever.  But for that to be the "whole point", uh, no.  Little kids think that Santa is the true meaning of Christmas and that we celebrate Easter because the Easter Bunny comes to our house and gives us candy.  It's okay for kids to believe in Santa Claus and The Easter Bunny but it is important for them to understand the TRUE meaning of these holidays.  And, I think you could use a little freshening up on the subject, too.

Yeah.

I'm not againt being proud to live in your country. But i am against war and too much pride in your country makes people support their country's policy without question even if that policy is a war that destroys families at home and abroad. And i'm not against celebration of holidays but it sounds like this thread proposes pressuring people to celebrate holidays even if they don't really want to. Also, people are pretty relaxed during christmas but what about when they are rushing around crowded malls trying to buy presents for people. And  remember the government can only make secular holidays national holidays because of something called the 1st amendment which says that religion is separate from the government and gives people the right to choose their own religious beliefs and practices.

I don't think a lack of unity is a problem for the united states. Our problem seems to be that we're so concerned with the war on terror (which seems to be about as productive as the war on drugs) that we're doing a lot worse fighting the war on poverty at home (if any attempt is being made at all to help the lower  economic classes)

Christmas has lost all it's meaning....the more $ you spend on someone the more you mean to them....Halloween is constantly under attack from the bible thumpers..but there are the morons who stick razor blades in apples and poison more candy....then there are the people who get an entire "Month" to celebrate while some have nary a day and others have nothing....bah, hum-bug  ::)

DizzleJ - How old are you?  I get the impression that you are a young person.  Who do you think pays for all these decorations?  Who pays for the gifts?   My kids do not need any more gifts or celebrations.   Their whole life seems to be a celebration.  Birthday parties are now unbelievable affairs.   Cat is not being a pessimist - she's being a realist.

We love Christmas.  In our household the Christmas Tree goes up on 1st December,  we sing carols at our church, go to Mass on Christmas Eve and then spend Christmas Day with family and friends.

But alas the first credit card statement of the New Year  arrives!

A lot of people dread Christmas because of the financial strain it puts on their household.

By the way I am not a "half empty" person.  I enjoy life and celebrating it - I just don't think we have to pay through the nose for it!!

I am proud to now celebrate International Pickle Week (which started in 1948, believe it or not, and is 10 days long but they still call it a week).  They always hold in in May and it covers Memorial Day weekend.  Yep.  I can celebrate me some pickles.

Too many of the "holidays" out there are created by the greeting card companies, which is a bit annoying.  Of course, if something becomes a Federal holiday and I get a day off of work for it, I don't know if I'm going to complain much... but I certainly don't need a holiday to celebrate life, that's an ongoing thing.
