That list is barely even worth remarking on. Where's Steve Vai, the inventor of the seven string guitar now popularised by the likes of Korn? Where's Joe Satriani? Kirk Hammett? As much as I love Metallica, Hammett is competent at best and boring at worst. Look how far down the list Eddie Van Halen is. That's a joke and an insult at the same time. Hendrix? Why does he keep getting picked as number one? Seriously. He was good for his time, and helped expand the limits of the instrument, and he is certainly influential, but that was almost 35 years ago. I simply refuse to accept that no better guitar player has come along since then. Where are the true modern innovators -- Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen, Gambale, Holdsworth? Trey Azagthoth of Morbid Angel is one of the best lead guitar players EVER. Where's he? Kurt Cobain could hardly even play the frickin' guitar. This just proves to me that Rolling Stone magazine has no relevance to modern rock music.

Perhaps they meant "guitarist who has made the best music," rathern than "most talented guitarist."  If that's the case, Malmsteen deserves no place on this list.  Even so, I am having considerable difficulty imagining Kurt Cobain as number twelve.

It would be wonderful to hear Kurt's comment on being listed at #12.  He was not a fan of Rolling Stone.
I was a subscriber since '86, gave it up after Justin Timberlakes recording earned 5 stars ::) and in the same issue Pearl Jam got 3. >:(

Heh heh. I agree. Malmsteen annoys the hell out of me, but as a guitar player, he annihilates just about everyone on this list. Cobain was a songwriter who played the guitar, but he wasn't a guitarist. Same with Jack White from the White Stripes. That guy doesn't even know if his drummer is his ex-wife, or his sister!

Yeah, what he said.  Eddie Van Halen's placement defies comment.

Its a matter of opinion but many people seem to think that Cobain was a great guitarist.  People used to assume he couldn't play until he would go on shows (SNL) and prove them wrong.  From what I hear, he was quite underrated.  Not just anyone can use the vintage gear he did and play those riffs.  He had really fast hands and made it look easy.

I saw Kurt play once and he was great, but I don't consider him as one of the top 20 guitarists of all time. When Eddie Van Halen comes in at 80 on the list, it's apparent that all or most of the people involved in putting this together were on crack at the time.
