Subject: Canadians? No smiling...!
A nice little gem from tonight's London Evening Standard...
Posing for a passport photograph is now a solemn affair in Canada, where the foreign ministry has banned people from smiling in their pictures.
Canadians have been told to adopt a "neutral expression" for the photograph, which, say officials, "means no laughing, smiles, or frowning".
The ban came into effect on 15th August but for passport applicants who like to display a little personality there is a "smile amnesty" that will run until 3rd November.
Wow! I never realised you could laugh, smile, or frown in a passport photo...I thought you had to look deadpan...I can't really describe what expression I'm wearing on mine, but it has been known to frighten small children...!

i saw that artical...apparently, you're also not allowed to wear sunglasses, but you may wear glasses that are tinted and allow the eyeball to be seen. ???

If i lived in Canada i wouldn`t wanna laugh or smile anyway, so whats the big deal ??? :P
Subject: Re: Canadians? No smiling...!
wait a minute.....I always thought that right before they take the photo they always tell you that your wife died...that way you look the worst you can in the photo...

I would probably smile by accident, I would smile just because I would be thinking i'm not allowed to, so that would make me laugh. I often smile at inappropriate times, like when i'm getting in trouble and that gets me in MORE trouble, or when I hear about someone's cat getting hit by a car or something like that.

I live in Canada. I've never had a passport picture taken and if I had I would have smiled. Just a simple smile, like for a school picture, not like some passport pictures I've seen where the people look like they are posing for a magazine cover.
I guess I won't know. No big deal, it's only a little photograph.

That was a great documentary! It even has the city I live in it (Windsor)! I think its the only major documentary partially taped here.
Anyways, I don't understand a lot of American politics or the American judicial system, so most those articles flew over my head. However, I get the sense that some people think the Patriot Act II is a bad thing.

Looks like I'm a little late in replying to this thread...
No teeth, eh? Grrrr... >:(
I just had mine renewed last year, so I think I'm good for another...4 years. I sure wish they'd make it a 10-year passport (like the Americans). :-/

Well, good thing that is Canada and not Idaho. If a Canadian foes to Pocatello, he might end up getting arrested. Below is a REAL LAW from Pocatello, Idaho:
"It is prohibited for pedestrians and motorists to display frowns, grimaces, scowls, threatening and glowering looks, gloomy and depressed facial appearances, generally all of which reflect unfavorably upon the city's reputation."
