Subject: Covers that are better than the original
A thread following on from Hoeveels which occurred to me after listening to the radio this morning. They played
Dancing in the Streets by Mick Jagger and David Bowie
which, IMO, is better than the original by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.
So which other cover versions do people think are better than the originals
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
Hi karen...
I'm of the opinion that originals are better left alone, but here's three that blows that theory out of the water...
1. We Can Work It Out - Stevie Wonder
Doesn't just pull the Beatles' version apart but rips it limb from limb...great performance (as much as I like the original...)
2. Hey Jude - Wilson Pickett
Ditto the comments above...
3. It Must Be Love - Madness
Which has become the definitive version of the long-forgotten Labi Siffre original (which was weak-ish, in any event...)
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
I prefer Atomic Kitten's versions of Eternal Flame and The Tide Is High to the original versions, although they're pretty good. Also Steps' versions of Tragedy and Chain Reaction are fab. AK and Steps are 2 of my favourite bands.
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
I can only think of one at the moment -
"Red, Red Wine" by UB40 is much better than Neil Diamond's.
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
Yo la tengo does "Be thankful for what you got" quite soulfully even though the original version had the beat and soul.
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
I cant say that Lenny Kravitz and Ozzy Osbourne's version of "Purple Haze" is better than Jimi Hendrix's, but it comes close. ;D

Nooooooo!!!!!!Blasphamy!!!
I despise their remake (if you can call it that) or 'Eternal Flame', they ruined a perfectly fantastic song - in fact, my favourite love song of all time.
Covers I like better:
Jealous Guy - Roxy Music
Tears of a Clown - The Beat
Easy - Faith No More
Smooth Criminal - AAF (Just slightly better that MJ's imo)
I don't wanna talk about it - Everything but the girl
Come on Eileen - Save Ferris
Can't Take My Eyes Off You - Boys Town Gang
Hazy Shade of Winter - Bangles
Don't Leave Me This Way - Communards
All Cried Out - Allure
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
Hmm...Eternal Flame is one of the few soppy love songs i can stand (i even quite like it :o ) ) but that's definitely the Bangles' version, like most '90s+ pop acts Atomic Kitten don't seem to cover anything satisfactorily. Although, is the Bangles' version the original?

Slayers version of Dissident Aggressor is better than the original by Judas Priest ;D
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
Id say that GNr's "Knocking on heavens door" is better than Dylans...and Manfred Manns "The mighty Quinn" and "Blinded by the light" are better than the ones that Bob Dylan and Springsteen put out...

I didn't say it was better. I just prefer the way Lenny is playing the guitar for this song. It's more......how can I put this.....heavy.
Don't get me wrong I think Jimi's the best guitarist to ever grace the planet.
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
I agree with Paul's comments concerning the Beatles covers, definitely. Another that qualifies would be....
With A Little Help From My Friends - Joe Cocker style.
The First Cut is the Deepest - Rod Stewart did credit to this Cat Stevens original.
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
Two instances that immediately come to mind...
The Everly Brothers do a great job on Mandolin Wind, Lay Lady Lay, Have You Ever Loved Somebody, Fifi The Flea, The Collector, amongst others...
The Corrs' Dreams is 20 times better than Fleetwood Mac's version...

I only think that because they are all, minus the male, incredably hot.

I don't know, I've just never been a fan of the original really :) I just like Save Ferris's spin on it.
Oh, and yeah I agree that The Corrs version of 'Dreams' is a lot better - and I'm not that way inclined, so I can't be biased for thinking the girls are hot ;D

well he is an awesome bassist, but I dont swing that way... ;D
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
Roberta Flack is a great songwriter, but I've never really been able to get myself to like her brand of 70's shlocky soft-pop. This is why I like the Fugees' version of "Killing Me Softly" so much.

Hey Karen, I like that song as done by Van Halen from thier 1982 offering "Diver Down" :D
As for others...I like the Phil Collins version of "You Can't Hurry Love" much more than the Supremes...and yet I don't like his remake of "Groovy Kind Of Love". I liked the original by the Mindbenders from 1966. Last for now but not least I HATED the remake of "Missing You" by Tina Turner....John Waites' original is by far the best...IMHO ;) Let's not even get me started on Dolly Parton "Stairway To Heaven" or Supertramp Madonna ruining "American Pie" :P
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
Aerosmith's version of "Come Together" is better than the Beatles'. I know that's blasphemy, but there's a kind of nasty slinkiness to the original, and they were the perfect band to bring it out. Also, Reel Big Fish did a great ska/lounge version of "Hungry Like The Wolf" on a Duran Duran tribute album.
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
Lets add:
Quartz feat Dina Carroll - It's Too Late (Don't really care for the Carole King version)
Pet Shop Boys - Always Of My Mind
Wheatus - A Little Respect
I think that usually if you hear the cover before you hear the original then you tend to prefer it. An exception for me is Gloria Jones's 'Tainted Love' - as I love both hers and Soft Cells versions equally.
Hoeveel - Yes, the Bangles version is the original.

I think perhaps this is true when you are younger but not as you mature.
I can't thik of any examples right now but there are some songs where I heard the cover version first but prefer the original. If I think of any I'll post them
Subject: Re: Covers that are better than the original
I agree about AAF-Smooth Criminal
Also Jimi Hendrix-All Along the Watchtower. Dylan even said Hendrix did it better.
