No New Nukes

Ask Congress to vote "NO" to new nuclear weapons.

The Senate is expected to vote on funding for new nuclear weapons in early September. It turns out that Senator Arlen Specter's vote is key if there's any hope of forging a more sane nuclear weapons policy. This vote will be very close.

The Administration has asked Congress to fund a new nuclear weapon called the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator (RNEP) or "bunker buster". The RNEP would be a redesigned nuclear weapon for use against underground bunkers. Reportedly, it would have a yield around seventy times the size of the Hiroshima bomb.

Building new nuclear weapons for battlefield use would put at risk international efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and risk starting a new arms race.

Help encourage Senator Specter to vote against new nuclear weapons! Please call, fax, or e-mail him; urge him to oppose funding for new nuclear weapons. Tell him that you believe new nuclear weapons would endanger global security.

Building this would be the height of hypocrisy. Not that they would let that worry them...

I will call my friends, Bernie (Sanders) Jim (Jeffords) and Pat (Leahy), my congressional deligation, and pass on the message, although I don't think it necessary.  I'm sure they are already on board.
