Subject: I survied the 2003 blackout!
Wow, being from the suberb of New York City, Valley Stream, New York, my power went out at about 4:20. I spent my afternoon talking on the phone to my friend who was alone in his house and didnt know what to do, and I invited him to come to mine, but he never showed, maybe I should call or something...anyway, I got to bbq for dinner, yay, and then I just rode out on the open road checking out the dark dark surrounding towns, to find that two towns over, in Rockville Center, New York, power was up and fully restored. When I returned home at like 11, power was back, but cablevision wasnt up, so I couldnt tell you guys until now, when Cablevision returned. Thanks for your concern you know ::), I thought the board would be flooded with this stuff. ;) :) Anyway, I survived, adn thats all that matters.

It's great you made it alright. I had just replied to your post on this issue in the other thread too. Aren't you glad you weren't trapped in an elevator or subway?
I had the same thought you did about how there was very little on the subject in the forums. Maybe some people's power is still out?

Yeah, over half the state is still out...just the towns by Rockville Center are up and running. Well Billy works in the Library at Hofstra university, and there mightve been problems with people in the elevators, that would suck beign trapped there.
but you shouldve seen it on the street, I was driving around, and I needed gas, so we stopped into a gas station in Lynbrook(town between Valley stream(where I live), and Rockville Center), and the line was like two blocks long. And there were cars actually trying to cut the line and get in from the seccond enterence of the gas station for gas, and a fist fight was started by a motorist and a gas station attendent. Im suprised there was enough gas to last for that many cars. And the drivers were crazy tonight, I almost got rear-ended like 8 times.
But thanks for your concern... :)

Well, considering I couldn't get online at all last night, I think it's safe to say that the power outage (in some way, shape or form) affected those who weren't in the NE as well.
Anyway, I'm glad you & Billy survived. And, all others out there who did. :D

The lunchtime news here in Britain carried a report on this. I only caught the last bit of it. They are still not sure what the cause was but it seems likely that a fire at a power station caused the problem. The grid is probably close to maximum capacity with everyone running the air-con. One station going down overloaded other parts and it dominoed from there.
Hope no one was too badly affected by this, other than not being able to get on-line of course!

In Australia the story has changed during the course of the day. First we heard it may have been terrorists. Can't blame em for thinking that. Then we hear on tonights news that due to the hot weather too many air conditioners were being used which caused a huge demand on the system and it shut down.
I 've been wondering about Howard today. Given that he is phobic about train travel I hope he wasn't on the subway when power was lost.
Glad it was caused by nothing more than hot people trying to cool down.
Cheers.
Subject: Re: I survied the 2003 blackout!
I heard it was caused by either a power failure or a fire.
Subject: Re: I survied the 2003 blackout!
Like I said in another thread, we just got a power surge. Couldn't figure out what caused it until I turned on the t.v. about hour later.

I was so lucky.I just came off the city bus from work at about 4:20 yesterday and I saw traffic lights were out so I thought it was the traffic lights only,my assumption. As I came home,I saw my Mother and neighbor standing outside and they told me,"There has been a blackout".I couldn't believe it,I just freaked out.No air conditioner,no fan,no nothing.I was sweating like a pig.My Mother and I were waiting for my Father at about midnight and I tried to go to sleep. The windows were wide open. The power, what's most of it came on this morning at about 8am.I breathed a sigh of relief and we made it.16 hours(NYC)without power was not that great but I lived it,I can say that.So what if I miss a day of work, who cares. What counts is that everyone is alive! ;)

i just got power back about 15 minutes ago even though they had power across the street all morning
Subject: Re: I survied the 2003 blackout!
it's glad to hear that everyone survived the blackout. i was at my grandmother's house when we heard about it; she didn't loose power (i don't think they lost power here either). i kept wondering how the board members were doing and who was affected by the power outage. (is that a sign of being addicted to the boards? ;))
Subject: Re: I survied the 2003 blackout!
hey, i survived, too...and i was working in a grocery store at the time. let me tell you...grocery stores during blackouts are a little piece of h*ll on earth.
Subject: Re: I survied the 2003 blackout!
I can relate to you guys who didn't have power yesterday. I grew up in a place that was always having rolling power outages. Do you know what those are? We had set schedules as to when our area would be without power because the place where I lived couldn't supply the load that was necessary to sustain everybody. Sometimes our power would be out for a couple of hours at a time, two or three times a day. Other times it was longer. It wasn't fun, but we learned to live with it.
I don't know why some people make such a big deal out of a single incident. I have a feeling that it's probably because many take having power, water, etc. for granted.

I'm in a suburb of Detroit. The power just came back on about an hour ago! I was out in my car charging my cell phone and the neighbors all came outside yelling "IT'S ON!! IT'S ON!!"

Yeah, well it looks like we could all blame Canada for this one...;D...I knew it wasnt terrorism all along...but thank you everybody for your support...

It is ironic that:
I came off the bus on that Thursday afternoon at about 4:20pm and BOOM! It had started. It never happened an hour before cause I was still on the train and everything was fine at first.I could've been stuck in the city.Lucky Me! ;D
4:11pm and 9/11.somewhat similar.
Does anyone else have any ironies from that day?

Oh yeah, I forgot youre in Queens...when did you get your power back?
Subject: Re: I survied the 2003 blackout!
Being here NYC (Brooklyn) , our electricity went out at 4:11 P.M.. It was 91* that day. All was well.Drivers were pretty much not taking turns at intersections, though. My friend in Manhattan saw a guy come out of a pub, with beer mug in hand, to direct traffic. Our electricity came back around 3:00 A.M. Friday morning. 8)

No offence, but is New York accident prone?

I woke up at about 6:30 In the morning, and I tried to see if the power was back on. It wasn't, so I went back to sleep. And at about 7:00, I heard my VCR come on. The power was finally back on!
Subject: Re: I survied the 2003 blackout!
I hope everything is OK now and I'm glad (for now) that it wasn't a terrorist act. But we have had our share of blackouts at least once every other year, usually with ice storms in the winter or thunderstorms in the summer. I was fun before 9-11, but not anymore. :(

Everything that needed electricity finally flickered itself back on.I was just suprised. Some of the things were mostly out of sync.
