Subject: Covers that Ruin the Original for You
Don't you hate it when someone does a terrible cover of a song you like; sometimes to the point that you can no longer listen to the original?
Some songs that come to mind, for me, are
Boyzone's (i think) cover of Baby, Can I Hold You originally by Tracy Chapman
Metallica's (amongst many other songs they've slaughtered) cover of So What by the Anti-Nowhere League
and just recently some RnB (of all things :P :( ) group called
Outlandish have done a disgustingly cheesey cover of Khaled's Aïcha...now i've heard all sorts of covers of this from Reggae, to Salsa, to Turkish Pop but none of them were offensive - but this... :P And they've totally destroyed the verse (rant end ;) ).
That's all i can think of (for now ::) ). Anyone else?

I just heard the first minute of Crowded House's "Don't Dream. It's Over." by some female singer who "wizzed" all over it. :P I had to turn off the radio, it was so bad, IMO.
Subject: Re: Covers that Ruin the Original for You
The last half a minute of "Killing Me Softly" by Fugees. Why did they murder that song with that pointless rapping?
Subject: Re: Covers that Ruin the Original for You
Robbie Williams version of George Michael's "Freedom" is diabolical, as are:
Will Young - Light my fire
Jose Feliciano - Light my fire (Why mess with such an excellent tune?)
Billie Piper - Last Christmas

I just heard Mariah Carey's version of "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" and it was awful. :-X :-X She completely distroyed that song.

Fugees cover of Killing Me Softly- I don't know if Roberta Flack did the original, but it was her version I was familiar with. Lauren Hills' addition of extra notes in the chorus destroyed my early memories of my mum singing the song...
Emma Buntons' cover of 'What I am' by Edie Brickell. Different accent, different intonation, different end effect (i.e. dissatisfaction).
I'm sure there's more, but I haven't woken up enough to think of them... :P

That would be by Sixpence None The Richer. :)
NOT my favorite cover. :-/ :P

"I Love Rock n Roll" by Britney...
Well, it hasn't actually ruined the original for me, but it was a darn good excuse for a parody ;-)

I didn't mind the rapping on that. Actually, i think all in all, i prefer their version to the original *shrugs*. :)

Anything by Jamoroquai. Though he doesn't ostensibly do covers, all his music is 'derivative'. (I would say 'ripped off' if I wasn't conscious of litigation). I can no longer listen to Stevie Wonder without thinking of the 'prat in the hat', and how much money the new pretender has made from this. >:(
Subject: Re: Covers that Ruin the Original for You
lol, Britney- M. Bolton covered, "I don't want to wait anymore" by the Tubes, Bolton stinks
Kids in America good original by Kim Wilde, cover sounded like bubble gum
Some lousy group covered, "Signs"

Louise Nurding - Stuck in the Middle With You
Undercover - Baker Street
Under Cover - Slipaway
Fine Young Cannibals - Suspicious Minds
Mike Flowers Pops - Wonderwall
Mike Flowers Pops - Don't Cry for me Argentina
Gareth Gates - Spirit in the Sky
and many many more who should be loked up in the cell of the crap (can I say Crap) cover

I quite liked that version actually. Sounded well mad when i first heard it on the radio. And they take the mick out of Michael in the video too ;D Although, a lot of the music from the original is lost, as is usually the way with these types of covers.

I prefer Don McClean's version of American Pie to Madonna's.

I agree with you, I think it's probably the one of the best covers of recent years. I like it just as much as the original.

I have to disagree with you on this one. I've never been a fan of The Doors, and when they did "Light My Fire" it just went on and on and on. I love Jose Feliciano's acoustic guitar picking in his version. To me it just made the song so much nicer to listen to!
Subject: Re: Covers that Ruin the Original for You
Just downloaded the Clash's version (your fault maddog) of Junior Murvins Police And Thieves....it's terrible! Won't put me off the original though, I just won't listen to their version anymore

taTu's cover of "How Soon is Now?" is absolutely atrocious.
although it doesn't make me want to jam a spork in my ear like Everclear's cover of it does.

Yes Gareth Gates and Louise Nurding covered unneccessarily. As for Mike Flowers Pops, he was quite a bizarre individual (imagine Fred from Scooby Doo's dad) and did a very different version of Wonderwall - in fact, talking about songs I know that have been covered differently, I love 'Dancing in the Dark' by Big Daddy (I love this version as well as Bruce's).
'Mambo No 5' - Bob the Builder (why was this covered only a year or so after the original?)
'Celebration' - Kylie Minogue (Give me Kool and the Gang's version anytime)
'A little Respect' - Wheatus (no thanks - prefer Erasure's)
Also, Girls Aloud have just covered 'Girls on Film' originally by Duran Duran. Oddly enough, the song in itself sounds the same (no added beats or stupid effects) and the only difference is that it's girls singing.

I didn't know Girls Aloud covered that song, but they did cover East 17's Stay Another Day.

Jose Feliciano's "Light my fire" is just both morally and ethicly wrong...

Actually,I have no problem with both of them. ;D

this is a different song to the original. It is the same tune that's all. More a parody than a cover.
Back on topic I'm not sure that it spoiled the original but I don't like Atomic Kittens version of 'Tide is High' although it did introduce my four year old to some good music.
I actually prefer the Bauhaus version of 'Ziggy Stardust' and the Power Station version of 'Get it On'. Some covers are not worse than the original.

Oh yes, nothing can beat the original. To me Madonna's remake of American Pie has to be one of the low points of her long career.
Also, not technically remakes but practically anything Puff Daddy or Will Smith (which in fact are the majority of their hits) heavily sample suck. If I were the original artists of the songs they rip off Id be POed.

I like Uncle Kracker, and his cover of "Drift away" was alright, but I only like him if he stays away from that rap rock stuff. Like with "follow me" and "In a little while"

I think both versions of "Drift Away" were terrible songs, but Uncle Kracker's really ruins it.

Yeah, I agree about Jamoroquai. He even had the nerve to bash other artists on one of those MTV or VH1 specials a few years back. I thought it was pretty funny. Its like look who's talking.
I think the Dixie Chicks ruined Landslide after the Pumpkins did such a good cover of Stevie Nicks.

I happened to catch the Murder Dolls Completely DESTROYING White Wedding on T.V the other night.I never ever want to hear that again !
As to bad covers you should hear my mother kick off whenever she hears UB40's version of Red,Red Wine !
Subject: Re: Covers that Ruin the Original for You
I'll probably get lots of bashing for this, but I didn't at all care for Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails.
I have nothing against the guy, it's just that Trent Reznor's voice has a depth and a sadness that not many others can match.
Subject: Re: Covers that Ruin the Original for You
'Under The Bridge' by All Saints, originally by Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Though I don't care for much of the Chillis' music, to turn a heartfelt song apparently about the horrors of drug addiction into a simpering girl-pop slush is truly criminal. And as for the video... :P

Um. No offense to Trent Reznor, but that preppie does not show near the pain that Johnny Cash has felt in one half-second of his life.

damn i know!!! i was SOOOOO mad when I found out about that! I'm not against all covers (Joe Elliott of Def Leppard personally gave permission to a radio station to play a piano version of "Pour Some Sugar on Me" because a fan (who became his friend) showed it to him and he loved it) but that one....is just...EVIL!!

Supertramp...I mean Madonnas version of American Pie....Tina Turners woeful version of John Waites "Missing You"....and Dolly Parton doing "Stairway To Heaven ::)...and let's not forget Bolton's rendition of "When A Man Loves A Woman"...which when taken to court he emphatically denied stealing... :o Yes, he lost!

I wasn't that impressed with Marilyn Manson's cover of 'Tainted Love' and 'Sweet Dreams are made of these'. What's his next song gonna be? 'I just can't get enough' originally done by Depeche Mode?
Subject: Re: Covers that Ruin the Original for You
For me it's either Uncle Cracker's version of Drift Away, a song while maybe not great was a good reflection of it's era.
Or anything covered by Celine Dion, not that she picks great songs to cover but that layer of 'cheese' she applies to everything....while she may be Canadian and it's nice to see one of your own succeed, I'm glad she's living in Vegas now.
