Subject: Covers that Ruin the Original for You

Written By: Hoeveel on 08/12/03 at 09:50 p.m.

Don't you hate it when someone does a terrible cover of a song you like; sometimes to the point that you can no longer listen to the original?

Some songs that come to mind, for me, are

Boyzone's (i think) cover of Baby, Can I Hold You originally by Tracy Chapman
Metallica's (amongst many other songs they've slaughtered) cover of So What by the Anti-Nowhere League
and just recently some RnB (of all things :P :( ) group called
Outlandish have done a disgustingly cheesey cover of Khaled's Aïcha...now i've heard all sorts of covers of this from Reggae, to Salsa, to Turkish Pop but none of them were offensive - but this... :P  And they've totally destroyed the verse (rant end ;) ).

That's all i can think of (for now  ::) ).  Anyone else?

I just heard the first minute of Crowded House's "Don't Dream. It's Over." by some female singer who "wizzed" all over it. :P I had to turn off the radio, it was so bad, IMO.

The last half a minute of "Killing Me Softly" by Fugees. Why did they murder that song with that pointless rapping?

Robbie Williams version of George Michael's "Freedom" is diabolical, as are:

Will Young - Light my fire
Jose Feliciano - Light my fire (Why mess with such an excellent tune?)
Billie Piper - Last Christmas

Fugees cover of Killing Me Softly- I don't know if Roberta Flack did the original, but it was her version I was familiar with. Lauren Hills' addition of extra notes in the chorus destroyed my early memories of my mum singing the song...

Emma Buntons' cover of 'What I am' by Edie Brickell. Different accent, different intonation, different end effect (i.e. dissatisfaction).

I'm sure there's more, but I haven't woken up enough to think of them... :P

"I Love Rock n Roll" by Britney...

Well, it hasn't actually ruined the original for me, but it was a darn good excuse for a parody ;-)

Anything by Jamoroquai. Though he doesn't ostensibly do covers, all his music is 'derivative'. (I would say 'ripped off' if I wasn't conscious of litigation). I can no longer listen to Stevie Wonder without thinking of the 'prat in the hat', and how much money the new pretender has made from this. >:(

Kids in America good original by Kim Wilde, cover sounded like bubble gum

Some lousy group covered, "Signs"

I quite liked that version actually.  Sounded well mad when i first heard it on the radio.  And they take the mick out of Michael in the video too ;D  Although, a lot of the music from the original is lost, as is usually the way with these types of covers.

I have to disagree with you on this one.  I've never been a fan of The Doors, and when they did "Light My Fire" it just went on and on and on.  I love Jose Feliciano's acoustic guitar picking in his version.  To me it just made the song so much nicer to listen to!

Yes Gareth Gates and Louise Nurding covered unneccessarily. As for Mike Flowers Pops, he was quite a bizarre individual (imagine Fred from Scooby Doo's dad) and did a very different version of Wonderwall - in fact, talking about songs I know that have been covered differently, I love 'Dancing in the Dark' by Big Daddy (I love this version as well as Bruce's).

'Mambo No 5' - Bob the Builder (why was this covered only a year or so after the original?)
'Celebration' - Kylie Minogue (Give me Kool and the Gang's version anytime)
'A little Respect' - Wheatus (no thanks - prefer Erasure's)

Also, Girls Aloud have just covered 'Girls on Film' originally by Duran Duran. Oddly enough, the song in itself sounds the same (no added beats or stupid effects) and the only difference is that it's girls singing.

this is a different song to the original.  It is the same tune that's all.  More a parody than a cover.

Back on topic I'm not sure that it spoiled the original but I don't like Atomic Kittens version of 'Tide is High' although it did introduce my four year old to some good music.

I actually prefer the Bauhaus version of 'Ziggy Stardust' and the Power Station version of 'Get it On'.  Some covers are not worse than the original.

Oh yes, nothing can beat the original. To me Madonna's remake of American Pie has to be one of the low points of her long career.

Also,  not technically remakes but practically anything Puff Daddy or Will Smith (which in fact are the majority of their hits) heavily sample suck.  If I were the original artists of the songs they rip off Id be POed.

Yeah, I agree about Jamoroquai.  He even had the nerve to bash other artists on one of those MTV or VH1 specials a few years back.  I thought it was pretty funny.  Its like look who's talking.

I'll probably get lots of bashing for this, but I didn't at all care for Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails.
I have nothing against the guy, it's just that Trent Reznor's voice has a depth and a sadness that not many others can match.

'Under The Bridge' by All Saints, originally by Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Though I don't care for much of the Chillis' music, to turn a heartfelt song apparently about the horrors of drug addiction into a simpering girl-pop slush is truly criminal. And as for the video... :P

For me it's either Uncle Cracker's version of Drift Away, a song while maybe not great was a good reflection of it's era.

Or anything covered by Celine Dion, not that she picks great songs to cover but that layer of 'cheese' she applies to everything....while she may be Canadian and it's nice to see one of your own succeed, I'm glad she's living in Vegas now.
