Subject: Kid goes to jail for website

Written By: John_Seminal on 08/05/03 at 02:07 p.m.

A 20 year old, who started a website which was aimed at "exposing police brutality" and "overthrowing the US government", has been sentanced to a year in federal prision. On his website he had links to other sites with information about how to make bombs.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/08/05/anarchist.prison.ap/index.html

The interesting thing from what I have been reading is he did not have the instructions for making bombs on his website, but a link to someone elses website. The government threatened to charge him with new terrorism laws, and sentance him to 20 years, so he plead guilty to a lesser offence and was sentanced to serve one year in prison, and upon his release to be under the watch of the parole service for three additional years.

Does anyone think it is a good idea for government to throw people in jail for having links on their website? This kinda reminds me about the arrests made for people who had links to DeCSS a few years ago.

Eh?  Why didn't they shut down the sites he linked to instead?

And it's great to see they're still misusing the word 'anarchist'.  ::)

well, to start with, he's definitely not, by any means, a "kid".

With that said...as far as being sentenced to jail for linking to sites, I think in this case it was a bit of an extreme sentence.

I'm wondering if there's more to the story than what were are being told.  If what we have heard is all there is to hear, and all he did was link to them, then I guess they probably should have just shut his site down, shut the linked sites down, and gave him some kind of warning or maybe a fine or something.

As I have said before, Big Brother (read Big John) is watching.  Don't step out of line ( as the Buffalo Springfield put it in their ONE hit) or the man come and take you away.
Rediculous

It doesn't mention violent means explicitly.

I think it is like those laws after columbine which make it illegal to help others do violent acts (like parents who do not lock away guns). By offering a combination of "we hate this and that" and "how to make a bomb" all in one central location, I can see how some nut might build a bomb. But I agree, I would have taken his site down and given him probation- told him to stay away from PC's for a year or two. I do not think jail is an appropriate sentance because nobody was harmed.

That's pretty intense. I mean, "exposing police brutality" and "overthrowing the U.S. Goverment." :o

The article doesn't really tell us explicitly what kind of content was on the site. Did he advocate using physical violence?

Austin himself (the kid) admitted to posting the bomb-making links to enable others to use bombs during "demonstrations".   :o  Why do you need a bomb at a demonstration? Hmmmmmmm.

Austin also stated that he "feared his case was eligible for a terrorism enhancement", so there must have been something  to these charges.

I agree.  As said in my earlier post, I think theres some details we aren't aware of.

Also, I think the media(at least from what I saw) was trying to give the impression that this guy was just an "innocent kid".  He's 20, he's not a kid.
