Subject: FBI files on American Citizens
What do you think it takes for the FBI to start a file on an American citizen? Everyone knows what Hoover did, but those days are over, right?? Or do you think everyone has a file, and the number to your file is your SS number? I wonder what kind of stuff the government keeps in there anyways.
Personally, I am against data mining.
Modified to add: I can just imagine George W Bush's FBI file: "@sshole, but don't screw with his daddy".

I think the average American has nothing on their files. I think they'd only have files on people who where some kind of threat to them; or a pest.
And about 90-odd% of Americans are harmless - in that area.

I know I have a file. I'm curious what is in it. Somewhere in Washington are my fingerprints, too. It was started when I joined the A.F. I wonder if anything was put into it after I got out. Probably, I'm living with a radical. ;)

Modified to add: Why should they be allowed to keep the DNA after a person finishes their service? If the reason they keep DNA is to identify bodies, when a person leaves the military, then what interest does the military have in keeping DNA? Could it be because poor people join the military and they want to keep data about us. Security for the rich right?

The article stated that the regestry was set up AFTER Dessert Storm. I got out before Dessert Storm so I doubt that my DNA is there. But then again, you never know. :-/ I think you may be right about wanting to keep tabs on people.

Of course this is one BIG invasion of privacy. The whole idea, I think, is to scare people out of discenting. "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU DUDE - so you better behave." I, for one could give a flying F. Let the SOBs watch. I will NOT be scared out of my freedom of speech, which if it means anything, it means the right to disagree. Are you FBI guys getting this or should I repeat it? Let me know. You know where to find me.

You know Hoover kept all sorts of stuff in FBI files on American citizens, such as if they preffer #1 or #2 for fun. I wonder if they put in his file that he wore pantyhose under his $500 trousers. ::)
I guess that saying about power currupting is ture. I saw in a book once that Hoover tried to blackmail JFK with pictures of him and women he had at the white house. I wish I could remember the title. It was 20 pages of an expert from a book I had to read for a college class.

If you read the article posted, you will see that
"Normally, the registry will retain DNA cards for 50
years, the same length of time military medical records are
kept on file. Once you complete your full service
obligation, you also can request destruction of your DNA
record."
As far as this being an invasion of your privacy, I don't see that. When you join the military, you give your fingerprints and dental records, why not your DNA? As has been the case in recent years, there have been many who have fulfilled their terms of service who have been recalled for military action. If they keep it on file, those who have been recalled to service already have it done. There is no need to collect this info again, which saves a bit of $$.
BTW, I'm pretty sure I have an FBI file as I have a relative who has been wanted by them for many, many years. I really don't care what's in it.

O.K., this is going to sound strange (to say the least) if i'm wrong, but - #1 and #2 are scatological euphamisms in the U.S. right? That's all i can think of that it would mean :-X

Hoover knew about people's sex lives. He knew if you were gay. He knew if you preffered to park your car in the #2 slot.

It would be very funny if it wasn't so real. And this is how they spend our tax $$$, rather than protecting our kids and fighting crime. By the way, what happened to Jimmy Hoffa (you agents have an answer?).

Growing up during the Cold War, I remember hearing all those horror stories about the KGB. "See, that is what communistism is about-no freedom, no nothing." But, it seems that this "FREE" nation of ours has the equivilant of the KGB. This government department goes unchecked and can basically do whatever it likes and infrenges on our Constitutional Rights!

It all depends on who writes the history. We are doing the same in guantanamo bay. We have taken people and jailed them without a judge or lawyer seeing them. Except we are civilized and lable them "enemy combatants". I guess that makes all the differance.
