Subject: Jo Brand -- Fat British Comedienne
http&&&www.chortle.co.uk/comics/jbrand.html
You seen this gal?
Thanks God she is just popular in the UK.
She has a mustache. Yikes!
And dig this quote about her on this site link I included:
Like other leftist agitproppers, she hectors us on how to be politically correct in the multicultural inner city Hell that is London, whilst she herself lives in a money-lined nest in leafy suburbia. I am amazed that the views of wealthy middleclass liberals are still given elbow-space.
Heh-heh!

Hi Zippo!
May I ask in fairness if you have seen any of her comedy?
Jo Brand is a great comic with a dry sense of humour. She mocks herself to get the laughs as well.
As for the political nature of the first quote, she has political views (like anybody) but I doubt she can be called a hypocrite for making a success out of her life.
What do the British people on the board think?
Subject: Re: Jo Brand -- Fat British Comedienne
Nope, I've only seen snippets of her act.
She seems very bitter and angry. Because of the way she looks mostly.
I don't doubt that she's funny. You can't take her seriously though since women like her JUST SCREAM: 'SOUR GRAPES!!!'
Like if little Naomi Wolfe had been homely and not pretty, her book The Beauty Myth would have just been more sour grapes as well.
Just ugly girls mad about the fact they aren't as pretty as Cameron Diaz.
Just how I see it.

Huy, well, not to get all righteous but usually i don't judge my comedians on the way they look ;D Granted, she isn't one of the top comedians around and she can be very unoriginal - and her pseudo-misandrony can be very laboured sometimes - sometimes but she can still be very funny at times, especially some of the deadpan stuff.
As i say, she's not one of my absolute favourite comedians so i don't catch a lot of the stuff she does, so i can't really comment on the whole P.C./Class/Location debate.

Zippo - Maybe it's my left-wing bias but that seems a fairly simplified argument to me. I agree, whether people like it or not, looks are still a very big factor for people - especially in the case of women. Personally, i think Jo Brand isn't as bothered as you think about the way she looks. When you say she's very bitter and angry, i think you are missing the sardonicism; the self-irony and as i say, she does deadpan quite well.
I agree that maybe she may have not ended up as a cynical comedian if she had been good-looking. But i think that cuts both ways: this will probably strike you as a typically lefty argument but the thing with people like Cameron Diaz is that they are that pretty they don't have to think.
Opviously, Jo Brand wouldn't get any acting jobs or even anything on T.V. to be honest if she was just a straight-forward actor.
And on the other side, if Cameron Diaz lost her looks today - how long would her 'talent' keep her in the spotlight?
On Naomi, i'm pretty sure properly feminist literature has been labelled as sour grapes and the like and they've been dismissed as ugly, man-hating feminists who are bitter turn to lesbianism because men don't want them - although that's never said outrightly, usually.
It seems to me, it's more your interpretation that changes rather than the book itself, if the woman is unnattractive. Maybe that's just my prejudice.

Well,
The Naomi Wolfe insight about her book would be sour grapes if she was homely...
This was brought up by a woman journalist in the 90's. While interviewing her.
On CNBC I think. Her name was Jane Wallace. I think the show was Equal Time.
She was a co-host of the with Mary Matalin. The lady who married James Carville. Don't ask me why. Equal Time was a good show.
But once Jane left the show lost something.
But yes, women's looks count more. Just the way it is.
And yes, Cameron Diaz would not have her career if she wasn't so pretty. She is a decent actress though.
She's no Glenn Close though.

I'm not going to dive into this. It's way too shallow.

ye wha?

Quoting:

End Quote
:-) And you'd not want to hit your head on the bottom... especially not Jo Brand's
Jo Brand can be extremely funny as well as being very witty, though as a male I find some of the "leaving the loo seat up" sort of stuff a bit wearing. I saw her on stage a few years ago and she was brilliant - her timing is spot on. As already pointed out, her humour is often extremely dry and sardonic, and frequently sarcastic, so if you're not getting the context of the joke, you might be missing the point completely.

I actually find Ruby Wax obnoxious. Now I have seen enough of Ruby Wax on sitcoms and chat shows to make a personal opinion.

Ruby Wax is an American living in England, right?
She did a funny cameo on Absolutely Fabulous.
She had facial hair. Like a lot of middle aged women.
