Subject: Cuba
I was watching "The Today Show" this morning and they had the editor from some travel magazine who ranked the best sites in the world to vacation at. For the carribian, Cuba came in #1, beating out places in the carribian like Jamaca or the Camen Islands. He cited "very friendly people", great food, untouched beautiful landscapes, and that it is not too expensive as his reasons why Cuba is a great vacation destination. His magazine said Cuba is one of the most beautiful islands in the world.
My question to you is, if you had the free time and dough, would you go to Cuba?
My anwser is yes. If nothing else than to see where Hemingway lived out his latter years. I would like to stay at the hotel he lived at, and drink martini's while I listen to stories of fishing captins and Marlins. Plus, from what they said on the show this morning, they made the natural landmarks sound so beautiful.

Yus. I can't see any reason why not. My parents and my younger brother went recently and they liked it.
Plus it would be interesting - despite the fact it's not exactly a perfect rendition of Communism - to see this little haven from Capitalism before it disappears: fast food chains already have dibs on sites on the promanade in Havana.
Also, countries with a poor economy and a large reliance tourist income tend to have a thriving sex industry ;)
Although, they are apparently all on rations and therefore all thin. :-/
In any case, the music is meant to be good and it would be interesting to see how Cuban Communism works itself rather than the ivory tower speculation i tend to get into in political arguments.

having been to a few Carribean islands already, and loved it, I would definitely travel to Cuba for a vacation.
Live there? Not a chance in hades.
Vacation there? Definitely.

'Nice place to visit, but i wouldn't wanna live there' - probably an inaccurate quote but you probably get the gist. :D
I agree. As i say, these people are on rations and plus, as has been pointed out in another thread, once you stay there you can't leave. And also, as my brother has relayed to me, there are basically only 2 internet cafés in Havana and for both you need to flash your passport to show you're a tourist aren't a Cuban citizen.
I'm an internet addict - i don't think i'd cope. Even in this country it's the only way to get around state-censorship. Although, there are plenty of sites i can't get at because they are blocked.

I love to see new places. The only problem I would have with going to Cuba would be my fear of flying. The more and more I fly, the more and more I hate it. We went down to Puerto Rico a few years ago. I loved it down there and really enjoyed myself. It was just the plane trip that I hated. I know if the chance ever arose, I would have to swallow my fear once again.

Same here Cat.
I don't necessarilly have a fear of flying normally, but flying over the ocean really did make me uncomfortable for some reason. But Puerto Rico is great. I spent some time there as a youngster 15 years ago on a church mission trip, then returned a few years ago with some family to San Juan. It is really great down there.

We went down to see DC's family (his dad was living in San Juan at the time). I was bit nervious (not just because of the plane trip) but meeting his dad for the first time-plus to meet his aunts, uncles, cousins. I have never been kissed so much by a bunch of people I have never met in my life! :) But, I did learn how to order a white wine in Spanish. ;)

(1) It might not disappear, or at least what the Cubans consider the heart of the revolution might not disappear.
(2) Shame on you :o From what I hear there "jinateras or jinateros, depending on your taste, but not a real "sex insustry". Private contractors, but no real industry, and the Gov't cracks down on them - as it should, for the "dignidad de Cuba".
(3) The music is GEART, always has been. I'd go in a tick, but it is still illegal for most U.S. citizens - wonder why?
Subject: Re: Cuba
Yeah. Maybe sex industry was the wrong word. I was just looking for the right way to phrase it without repeating myself or violating the rules of the board.

Hmmm... it keeps getting better and better. And to think I wanted to go for the food and the scenery. Now you are telling me they have good music and hookers too? I do not want to take my evil ways there, but this sounds like a party.
