Subject: Man wakes from coma, still believes he's in 1984

Written By: Bobby on 07/11/03 at 03:23 a.m.

Have a look at this headline. I rarely copy headlines onto the 00s board but this got my attention.

There are some people that say they are 'stuck in the 80s' but this guy really is.

I'm reminded of that episode of the Simpsons where the guy in the coma wakes up and asks if Sonny and Cher still have that TV show. When he's told that she won an Oscar and he's now a Congressman, the guy dies of shock.  :)

You can now get the viewpoint of a 19/20 year old guy from 1984.  Sure he's 39 now, but his mind is still in 1984.

He's like a time traveler, his view of 1984 is unaltered by rose tinted glasses.  This guy would know the real 1984 as it really was.  So you can ask him all kind of funky questions.  I bet he'll be shocked to find out that Madonna is a middled aged woman, George Michael is a has been that is gay, and that Michael Jackson is a messed up weirdo with a melted face.

The Madonna and Cyndi Lauper thing will be interesting.  That would be like a 19 year old guy going into a coma now, and waking up to finding Britney Spears as a 40 something year old chick in 2023.  The guy is bound to be shocked that the 80's are now a retro decade right next to Elvis.  Someone should send him to this site, so he can see it all.

Oh man!!! :o :-really over in every sense of the word; maybe not so much from the environmental aspect, but politically and pop culture-wise....

...R.I.P. :-Modified to add that it is a blesssing all around that this man woke up after so many years in a coma and it is also wonderful to read his family never gave up on him. :) I wish them all the best. :)

Actually, he DID wake up in (George Orwell's) 1984  :(

Like Hairspray, I also wish him and his family well.

It really is a miracle that this man woke up at all. He may not like what America is like after the 80s, but his family is glad to see him alive at any era. :)

He was 19 when he went into the coma?  Hmm...everything he thought was cool back then in 1984 is basically 20 years old.  I'll bet it's a shock to him to find out he's nearly 40 years old and a middle aged man.  He probably thinks he's still a kid.

I remember there was a Twilight Zone or Amazing Stories  episode done back in the 80's with a story like this.  A guy went into coma back in the 1940's, and then awoke in the 80's and he was stunned at the changes that happened while he was sleeping.

The whole thing is such a captivating concept. The man would be faced with a reality v fantasy conflict. He has no idea of the CD, the DVD, games consoles as they are now and even mobile phones have got smaller.

Since then, America has had at least two more presidents, Britain has had two more prime ministers, countless actors, actresses and pop stars that he knew in a previous time have passed away.

I'm just wondering whether that could be all too much for one man to handle.

I feel sorry for the bloke. He's lost the best years of his life. He's gone from beginning his young-adulthood to being middle-aged. Personally, i'm not sure i could handle that. Not to mention all the time he's missed with his family.

When he went into a coma, his daugher wasn't even born - and now she's a woman of roughly the same age as he was at the time.

That must be a lot to deal with. :-/

He also might have to adjust with today's technology.
DVDs: He might get used to them and enjoy it since they have enchaned sound/images.
His first DVDs should be his favorite movies/TV shows from/before 1984.
Later on: (It'll take a while for him to get used to & learn some history) Some great movies from the mid '80's & 1990's.
If he was a fan of "Bosom Buddies" and liked Tom Hanks, he might be suprised/delighted that he's one of  the greatest actors today.

The same goes for CDs. (Of his favorite albums. Whether he was into metal, new wave, pop, etc.)
Then the "OMG" '80's compilation would show some history of pop music after 1984 and some memories from the early '80's.

Unfortionally, he might be suprised in shock about Madonna, Michael Jackson, and George Michael.

For a brief pop culture history lesson:
"I Love The '80's", magazines, & any cheesy E! special.
He might be dissapointed that MTV is now garbage, most of the huge film/music stars from the early '80's aren't that successful (having minor roles in films, infomercials, etc.) or have aged or nolonger around, and some of his favorite tv shows have been butchered onto film or remade on tv.
Whether he likes it or not.
He might feel comfortable watching "Nick At Nite" (catching up with the Keatons & cast of  of "Cheers"), "VH1 Classic" (check out the great videos from the early '80's, later videos from his favorite artists, and  several classics he might enjoy like A-Ha's "Take On Me", the return of Aerosmith, Pet Shop Boys, Michael Jackson's little sister, The Bangles, Bon Jovi etc.), and ESPN Classic to witness many great spoirting events he missed or enjoiyed.

I feel sorry for that guy.  I mean I really feel bad for him.  He was just a teenage kid when that happened to him in 1984.  That has got to be rough to lose that much of his life like that and just being a vegetable in a coma.  It was probably just as rough on his family too.

Imagine you're a 19 year old kid that is into Eminem or whatever, then you go into a coma and wake up some 20 odd years later in 2023 or 2024.  You find out Eminem is a fat 50 year old slob and that Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera are 40 something year old women.  And then you look up N'SYNC and find out they're all old bald slobs that are doing some embarrassing 25th anniversary reunion tour or something like that.  Then you talk about what you thought was cool from the 90's and Early 2000's and the kids in 2024 will be like "Huh?  Who were they?  Like OMG I wasn't even alive back in 2003!"
