Subject: The Summer Storms of 2003

Written By: Indy Gent on 07/10/03 at 09:17 p.m.

At least in my part of the US, there have been seemingly an endless chain of strong, damaging thunderstorms and a lot of flash flooding. Of course, everywhere in the United States except for the drought-stricken southern half of California and Arizona have experienced some flooding. But this has to be the soggiest July in several years in Indy, and the tornadoes seem to be sneaking up our area. How is the weather where you live?

Rainy. :( We're finally supposed to get some nice weather the next couple of days, but just about every day there is a "chance of rain" in the forecast and there have been plenty of storms.   :-/

The weather where I live in Northern England is fine, but I was holidaying in Jersey, Channel Islands a couple of weeks ago and the first night I arrived, there was an incredible thunderstorm.
It went on for 12 hours and there was forked lightning coming from all over the sky.  Not much fun when you're sleeping on a metal camp bed beside a window!!!!!!!

We didn't really get any bad storms around here.  Just rain.  Lots and lots of rain.

I was going to ask how people in the mid-west were doing with all the flooding. Are you in the flood zone, Indy?

Things here have been dry for quite a while but today we have much needed rain. It is still not as bad as last year-we were under dought conditions but after a wet winter, we are much better-but still need the rain.

I know the question wasn't directed toward me but, unfortunately, I'm in the flood zone.

Our county was among the 30-some in Indiana to be declared Federal Disaster areas by the Pres today.  Many many people are still stranded and tons of homes and businesses are still under 5+ feet of water.

Today is the first day in the last 6 we didn't have a bad storm with a ton of rain.

To answer your question, Cat, yes. And as of this writing, the White River cities of central Indiana are 7 feet above flood stage and rising. We will get a break until next Wednesday, but it was just supposed to be partly cloudy today, and there is a thunderstorm causing me to be stuck at work for a few more minutes (I hope not much longer.)
And it isn't nearly as bad as in Rome, GA, where most of my dad's family is. The Weather Channel is forecasting a chance of rain for the next two weeks.

I was actually thinking of you too, 80s. I haven't seen you around and was wondering if you were evacuated or not. I am glad to see you here.

My thoughts are with all of you who are in that area. I hope things get better.
