Subject: Motorcycle Helmets and Seatbelts
I came upon this question and answer on the web and thought it would make an intersting topic for all of us to discuss.
Question: Do laws that require citizens to wear motorcycle helmets and use seatbelts infringe upon citizens' rights? If so, should they be repealed?
Answer: There seems to be some confusion between rights and privileges. Owning, driving or riding in a car or on a motorcycle is a privilege, not a right. As an owner or driver you have a responsibility to insure the safety of yourself and your passengers. This includes buckling up in a car or wearing a helmut on motocycles. It is also good safety practice to wear a helmet when bicycling. When you practice good safety you have a better chance of living and enjoying both your rights and privileges.

It could be argued that not wearing your seatbelt could harm other road-users. :-/
Did you know it's perfectly legal in this country to open your car door in front of an on-coming motorcyclist? :D

To who and why?

First, to yourself. After that, those who love you (don't ask me why - ok a cheap shot, and just kidding ;D). Last, to the (as they call it in Massachussets) Commonwealth.
Why? The first two are obvious. The last has to do with the expense incured by the rest of us if you fly through the windshield or spill your guts on the road and live. Medical expenses, insurance rates, hospital overcrowding or medics not available to treat real accident victims (ie someone hurt by a cause beyond their control) etc. because of the stupidity of such an irresponsible person. Every action has consequences that extend WAY beyond the actor.
