Subject: Am I The Only One Who Think Rap Music Sucks?

Written By: ringer on 06/26/03 at 03:13 p.m.

I think rap is crap.

99% of it anyway.

Just lame-o rip offs, oh, pardon me, "samplings" of original songs and they talk, oh, sorry, "rap" over it.

I like a couple rock-rap fusion songs.  Like Radio Song by REM and KRS One.  And a couple more.

But Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre (what is up with their being TWO Dr. Dre's?, should anyone care) and the rest leave me cold.

Rap is a slightly less lame version of country music.  Rap was the disco of the 90's.

I think white people like to be "hip" and say how much they like rap and how brilliant it is.  I guess cos anything black people invent must be cool.

But rap is not one of those things.

Black music like rock, R&B, soul, blues, even some jazz I can enjoy.

But rap?  Crap.  Ugly sounding music (it's not even music) with ugly words talking about boring pointless junk.

What do they rap about?  Hoes, drinking a forty ounce, cops suck, racism sucks.  Aaa, I already know racism sucks, guys.

I hope it will go out of style like disco did.  Rap is punishment for slavery.  And no, it is not racism to not like rap music.

And I hate white kids acting like ghetto black kids.  This crap drives me nuts.  M&M, or Emeniem or whatever his name is...*sigh* I kinda sorta like him, god help me.  Even though he is one of those ghetto sounding white kids.

Falco (rock me amadeus) sang rap!  God help me, I liked him too.

I bought one rap single in my life.  I Goto Work by Kool Moe Dee.  It had this synthesizer horn sounding section in the background I liked.

I also liked this song that used the guitar riff from Led Zepplein's Kashmir that was used in the movie Bad Lieutenant.  Bye Schooly something...that was a cool bad song.  But it was rock-rap fusion.

And LL Cool J did an MTV unplugged where he did rap backed by acoustic instruments that was cool.  I remember to this day him rapping Mama Said Knock You Out with both arms raised and chucks of white deodrant under his sweaty arms.  That clip was kinda cool.

Still I think 99% of blows.  Opinions???

Does every topic you discuss have to be divided into "Black" and "White"?

I'm white and I used to listen to a lot of rap music. I didn't listen to it because I wanted to be cool like the "Black" man, I listened to it because I liked the music and the content appealed to me. Not all rap is about b****es, hos, fortys, and blunts.

You have to parody a rap song before you can appreciate the ubsurd intricacies of the rhymes they come up with. Eminem once rhymed "hundred million c**ks per second" with "Muthaf**king gospel record". I don't care if you think it's in good taste, it's still incredibly hard to pull something off like that and still have the song make sense.

As to rap and disco. I think techno is more the disco of our time. Both have really simple beats. Disco has the more laid back *bum  bum  bum  bum*. Whille techno goes about the rate of a heartbeat on E *bumbumbumbum*.

Disco and Techno are incredibly similar.

my opinion? well sounds to me like you haven't heard much rap.....new rappers suck..yes but old rappers are cool..yes thry ripped some songs off but who doesn't.....and disco hasn't gone out of style..you still hear it in some remixes... and it's obviously music being that it is called music.....and how would we know what music sounds like..maybe any kind of music is no music.......and as for Tupac and Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre being morons why dont you pick up a Biography on them...they can be smarter then you give them credit for...I mean you dont live with them or know them personally..so how would you know they are morons? and as for all of them rapping about B!tches and Drinking and things like that...I've heard a couple where they dont......also rapping like how you mentioned you sort of like Eminem...they like to get thier anger out...and if thats there talent and the can show people how they feel through it then they are going to do it.......so thats my opinion on what you are saying.

But yes, not everyone can do what a lot of the major rappers do.

But not everyone can do what Garth Brooks does...

It's called an opinion.  If you don't agree with someone, that's fine, but name-calling is totally unnecessary.  (And I don't care if I sounded like a teacher just then.)

Brushing aside the editorializing on rappers; no, you are absolutely NOT the only one who doesn't care for rap.  First and foremost, rap is theoretically NOT music.  Music has four elements, and in rap, one of the crucial elements seems to be missing: MELODY.  As with anything, there is an elemental basis for the composition of music. The material essence of music lies with its melody, harmony, rhythm, and dynamics.  Melody is a musical and successive line of tones or pitches perceived as a unity; not a SINGLE tone. Its characteristics include range, shape, and movement.  I submit:  Rap is spoken poetry with a soundtrack.  Is it art?  Possibly.  Is it entertainment?  For many, it is, so I don't begrudge anyone who wants to listen to it.  Thing is, I've never heard any rap that wasn't distorted by ungrounded, over-modulated, sub-par subwoofers that scare the bejesus out of small children and old people.

Subject: Re: Am I The Only One Who Think Rap Music Sucks?

Written By: John_Harvey on 06/26/03 at 08:15 p.m.

Is it art? That's a bit silly as you described it as poetry with a soundtrack. Poetry is art. Why wouldn't rap be art.

Basically, you are saying rap isn't music, because they don't sing. Death metal bands scream (mostly), does that mean it's not music?

That depends upon what style of death metal you listen to. Plenty of DM bands use melody and conventional song structure: verse/chorus/verse/chorus... Metal is obstencibly an extreme form of hard rock music, and while I see your point (in a lot of DM bands, the vocals are merely used as another instrument, and not really as 'singing' as it is normally defined), the basic structure of the music isn't that different to other conventional forms, and the beats and rhythms are vital to the songs.
As a general rule, however, rap is different. Technically, rap doesn't even need a beat behind it, because the beat isn't important, so most of the time the "music" element of rap isn't even necessary. Therefore, technically speaking, rap isn't 'music', but it is art. Rap is a vocal delivery style. If you want to argue about the music, you probably should be talking about the wider genre itself: hip hop.

You have a lot to learn when it comes to expressing yourself in messageboards, especially those of the moderated kind.

That's my opinion on your post.

As far as the topic -

IMO, old Rap was innovative and interesting; I even liked it to some degree. I haven't liked Rap since the mid 80's when all the fun seemed to be sucked out of it and was replaced with profanity, anarchy and violence. Yeah, "Gangsta" Rap ruined it for me, pretty much. Eh, no big loss as far as I'm concerned. I do, however, respect other's opinions and tastes in music. For those of you who like Rap, more power to you.

Well, not all rap music sucks.  Like someone said, the old school stuff is pretty cool.  I used to not like a lot of the later rap, but I think that's because for a while Poop Doody was saturating the market with his talentless tripe.  I would probably respect him more if he knew how to play more than one note (I think even that is lifted from something).

I'm pretty much down with anything that's come from the west coast, and starting to develop an appreciation (for the comic value at least) for the Dirrty South movement.  But other than LL, DMC, PE, Beasties and 3rd Bass, there's not a lot of rap outta NY lately that I like.  And you can throw some Miami Bass my way anytime - I heard a great mixshow on 107.7FM about an hour outside of ATL a few weeks back and it was non-stop booty-bass; energy level up the whole time.  I think I was doing about 90MPH on I-20 then...

But, you are probably not the only one who thinks 99% of it is crap...unfortunately for people like you, I think it's going to be around for awhile.  :-/

I agree with Hairspray.

I love to listen to 'Rappers delight' by Sugarhill gang' and 'The message' and 'White lines' by Grandmaster Flash. I don't mind rap as long as I can hear what they are trying to say. The emphasis in rap at the moment is not what you say but how fast you say it. I was listening to Sean Paul yesterday and by the end of the song was bewildered by it.

I have stated my, hopefully objective, opinion without judging anybody else. That is the most important part of debating, Ringer. Try not to be controversial for controversial's sake. Not only will it gain you few friends (regardless of whether you want them or not), people will be less inclined to hear what you have to say.

As for Garth Brooks I don't mind him. 'Boot Scootin' Boogie' is my favourite.  :D

One thing I have noticed is that White teenagers are far
more accepting of rap then they were 10 years ago.  Back in 1993, a typical 17 or 18 year old White kid would have turned his nose up against a lot of the rap artists of back then like Tupac and Snoop Dogg.

Today in 2003, White teenagers tend to love rap A LOT more.  Even defending it more then Blacks do.  It's just interesting how that changed.  Even 5 years ago in 1998, it was still a bit different.  Not many White teenagers would say they love rap.

I wonder how much the success of Eminem has to do with this?  Has he brought on a generation of White converts?  Eminem and the rap-metal bands have really altered the demographic for rap music.   I mean before the only White rappers were sorta embarrassing like Vanilla Ice or Beastie Boys.

Gangsta rap emering in the late 80s ruined it for a lot folks.  There were many rappers who hated the mainstream, lighthearted fluff rap of the Sugar Hill Gang, Run DMC, Wil Smith, and M.C. Hammer.  So they purposely made it louder, angrier, and unaccessable to mainstream White America.

And everything ringer said about rap is true of most forms of music.  There's always going to be a lot of watered-down, sterilised, simplified, lower quality pieces from a genre that are made for the charts. I imagine the fact that he's only ever heard the famous stuff might contribute to his opinion.

I discovered rap in 1998. I used to drive a couple of people to school in my senior year of high school and they liked to listen to Hot 97(New York station) in the morning when I picked them up. By late 98 I really didn't the rap music at that time anymore. Listening to a hip-hop station got me to listen to more R&B music that was happening at that time(112, Aaliyah, Next, KiCi & JoJo etc.) Howver I did start to dig into older hip-hop music like LL Cool J, Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince, Rakim(The greatest MC of all time in my opinion.) So there is rap music to appreciate thats older. I don't appreciate the rap music thats out now. It sounds watered down lyrically.

Having listened over the weekend to a dozen or so recent rap songs, I have come to the conclusion that the majority of these new words are made up because the rap artist in question doesn't have a large enough vocabulary to say what they want to using the words they know.  It's basically talentless rubbish that makes it on attitude over ability.  If people want to buy this s**t, it's their own lookout...

But (and it's a big but)-  I'm not criticizing the whole genre, merely the (large) majority of current rappers.  Look back to the late 50s/early 60s - there was some seriously crap rock n roll, too; every genre has had its talented exponents and its less-talented hangers-on... hopefully in ten or twenty years time, we'll all have forgotten some of these idiots and the memorable songs will still be with us.

Greed is a common characteristic of all people. The American culture of excess and money making schemes soon seeped into rap music and made it dirty. The market was preteens and teenagers; the product was pop; and the formula was the usual: drugs, projected fun, coolness, and sex.

I doubt rap will ever die, it's roots are too deeply embeded in American culture to disintegrate. But pop music is meant to die and ressurect itself. Today's pop is turning over to guitars and compostitions, hopefully this will open the minds (and music industry) of next generation Americans.

I do indeed like some rap. Just like I enjoy some rock,techno,jazz/Bebop,etc. I think there is always music which appeals to people. Meaning every normal kid arround the age of 17/18 has most likely heard some song by either 50 Cent or Eminem. Now, I enjoy some of thier songs such as "In Da Club" and "The Slim Shady Song". Rap really is a form of music. It is all about rythem and tempo and Beats. I am glad that Eminem is rapping around because most of his songs are alot less Gansta unlike his Protege: 50 Cent.
However, I see no need to have sooo much swearing and filthy language in modern day rapping. Or in any form of music for that matter. That is why lately, I have stopped listening to modern music. I just don't want to listen to songs about swearing and drugs and sexual encounters. That is why I really do enjoy music that had a good melody or beat without any singing. Such as Bebop or Techno/Dance. You know even if it only has a couple words that is fine. Like "Just Breathe".
Does anybody else feel that today's music can be immoral and distastefull?

Subject: Re: Am I The Only One Who Think Rap Music Sucks?

To be fair 'immoral' and 'distasteful' are subjective.

And i know i must sound like a broken record but as a socialist i really do see a lot of things as a class issue.  It's opvious that the further up you go in terms of class, swearing in everyday speech becomes rarer, less acceptable and more obscene.  Hip-hop is essentially a working-class subculture so there is understandabley more swearing in it than some people are used to.  Although, i do believe that a lot of gangsta rap and the like tend to step it up a few gears to increase the shock or taboo 'your-mother-wouldn`t-like-it' factor for their teenage, middle-class audience.

It's kind of a gravity style the rappers have, with their pants sagging.  The crotch being pulled toward the ground with the pant waist worn just above the groin - looks comical - you gotta chuckle when some kid walks by just a rapping and sagging.  Anyone explain the style?

Subject: Re: Am I The Only One Who Think Rap Music Sucks?

I read an article about this a long time ago.  In that, the explanations ranged from the idea that 'ghetto youths' were unable to afford clothes so they'd get ill-fitting hand-me-downs - apparently from older or bigger siblings or friends - and people must have just thought it looked cool and it just caught on to that it's a throwback from the earlier part of the 20th Century where black male prostitutes would wear baggy trousers so as to give easy access to their customers.

Personally, i think the second one sounds like a joke.
