this was the topic on the "Radio Factor"(Bill O'Riellys radio show) tonight.
It is drastic and will never be implemented simply because internet file-sharing is so huge and cannot be stopped, short of shutting down the entire internet.
I'm going out on a limb here to say that Hatch has probably never seen the ridiculous prices of CD's as compared to downloading music off the net. :D

Well it did say he was a part-time composer, so he may be speaking with emotion. I think the real reason CD sales are down is because of DVD's. Who is going to spend $16 for the "Die Another Day" soundtrack when they can get the whole DVD for $13 at Wal-Mart. Music should be priced bassed on demand; however, CD prices have been fixed for so long the industry doesn't want to change their practice.

thats a great point.
the argument some callers were making on "the Radio Factor" tonight is that CD's are so expensive because they are the "newest" thing, compared to cassettes which are the "older genreation of music".
That is bull-crap. If thats the case, then that, to me, is an admittance that the music industry is basically screwing us. If I can buy a blank CD for less than $.50, then why on earth does it cost me $15+ to buy a CD full of crappy songs with a fancy cover. ???
Subject: Re: I am Begining to hate certain Republicans too.
Ok, I know I am from Utah, but don't blame me. I promise I didn't vote for him. In fact there are quite a few of us who would love to see him gone.
I think this is ridiculous. It was brought up on the radio today. What if you are a business owner and one of your employees downloads a song and gets their computer zapped. Will that get the whole network? It is a royally stupid idea, but I wouldn't expect any less from Orrin Hatch. What a moron. ::)
Subject: Re: I am Begining to hate certain Republicans too.
He can't seriously have considered this idea. If he has, he's far too senile to continue in the Senate.
Subject: Re: I am Begining to hate certain Republicans too.
the best part, is his website uses an unregistered menuing system. Which means someone should take out his website by his logic.
There have been so many cases lately, where files have been mis-identified by the RIAA, and caused legal headaches for legitimate owners, that this isn't even practical.
Subject: Re: I am Begining to hate certain Republicans too.
This is just plain crazy! Ever hear of overkill, Sen. Hatch?

Of course the music industry is screwing you (and me). Its call free market capitalism - charge what the market will bear. And each company has a monopoly on the music they release, so if you want, say, the Beatles you have to get them from the company that holds the copywrite.

yet another reason it will never be implemented.
Waaaay to many possible unforseen/unexpected consequenses.
get a grip Orrin! ::)

Now see, the potential damage to important computer systems makes this idea impossible to implement. It would be far more practical to just visit each individual user's computer personally and smash it with a sledgehammer, which is pretty much, after all, what Sen. Hatch is proposing. After the second violation, you can start slashing their tires, and the third you can break their knees.

Shhhhh, Kenny, don't give the man any more ideas. :o
Subject: Re: I am Begining to hate certain Republicans too.
I reckon they should do it. The entire Internet would be destroyed within two days and the world would descend into anarchy.
;D
Subject: Re: I am Begining to hate certain Republicans too.
Orrin Hatch shouldn't be wasting his time trying to stop the copywriting of music because others will find a way to go around the boundaries he is trying to legislate. He should help George W. find those weapons of mass destruction. :-X

If the Music Industry was using the free market, they would be charging what people would pay; however, CD prices are fixed, and therefore are not using the "free market". How can you say "the free market is screwing you" then go on to say "the reason you are being screwed over is because of a monopoly"? Which is it the free market, or the absense of one?

You are quite correct. The man is and always will be a moron.
Actually, he has the attitude that he knows what is right for everyone. He is a very patronizing man...he knows best just sit back and trust him. There is no need for the little people to be involved in politics, just keep electing him. (most Utah Republicans have that same attitude. It has been said that a Utah Democrat is the same as a US Republican and I believe that.) Unfortunately, most of the voters keep voting for people like him because they are a bunch of sheep...they see the R behind the name and vote for it, then they whine about the job that they do. drives me insane.

Ahh, Indy, you just gave me a great idea. Let's give him Hans Blix's old job and then forget to bring him back :D...oh wait, that wouldn't be fair to the Iraquis, would it? :-/

As Adam Smith observed, in The Wealth of Nations (first published 1n 1776), businesspeople HATE the free market, and will always strive to create monopolies. Reason being, according to Smith, that competition forces sellers to sell their product at its value, while monopoly allows them to gouge. My use of the term "free market" was sort of tongue in cheek, since there "aint" no such thing.

Right now, Micheal Jackson owns the rights to all of The Beatles songs. Frightening, no?
