Subject: Guitars

I recently got a new electric guitar and amp (B.C. Rich Virgin N.J. series, and Behringer Blue Devil GX112 amp).

Anybody else got a guitar?

Also if you could teach me a thing or 2 about different types of distortion I would greatly appreciate it.  :)

I started out with crap, really cheap electric, which needed some pretty serious distortion before it started sounding remotely OK: I used a Yamaha Distortion effects pedal which gives a very Black Sabbath sort of sound; I guess you'd call the "other" sort of distortion more the overdriven 80s metal sound.

Most of my playing now is on a Sigma acoustic which sounds beautiful, though I still have a Hohner electric which plugs into a Dean Somebodyorother (I keep wanting to call it a Dean Martin ;-)) 100W amp for those times I need to get a bit of serious volume.  I still have the crappy old electric, it just doesn't get played much.

I have a Rickenbacker 330 and a Fender '65 Delux Reverb Amp, don't use distortion much as I mostly play melodic rock, i.e. Joe Jackson, soft Foo Fighters (Learn to Fly), Let's Active, Smithereens, REM,  my own originals.

I currently play classical with nylon strings...good guitar, but hard to tune...I got my eyes on a Fendor Stratacustic...an electric-acustic guitar...with a larger fret board and thinner body...good unit...

Like Philbo I started out with a cheap, cheap electric guitar. It was a Mann and a very bad Les Paul copy. It was very difficult to keep in tune. I played it through an old tube amp my dad used for his gigs and it sounded awful. Man, I wish I had that amp now!!

I currently have 5 guitars...

A classical acoustic with nylon strings
A Yamaha acoustic
2 Fender Stratocasters, one white with a maple neck and whitepick guard that I had to special order from Fender in 83 because they never made them then and the next thing I know the dude from Europe is playing one in the Final Countdown Video!! I should get royalties!! LOL the other is black with a rosewood neck and white pickguard and is my favorite guitar I've ever played. They sound totally different from each other too which I love.
A Gibson Les Paul custom Gem Series (emerald).

I have an old Roland Cube 60 amp and a small Peavey Rage practice amp. I have a DOD tube distortion pedal and a Boss Chorus pedal. I also have a Golden Throat talk box that I never use because it requires an amp with seperate power and speaker cabs...I'm saving it for when I finally get a Marshall Lead 150 with a 4X12 :)

I play a Peavey bass at work through a MusicMan amp but neither are mine. :(

I personally prefer Tube distortion over a normal overdrive as tube sounds fuller and sweeter and overdrive sounds dirty...if that makes any sense.

I don't really. It's the one I play the least. I do like it for certain songs though...Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain can't be played on any other type of guitar IMHO...but that's all about the unique sound of the nylon strings...

I suppose it's great for finger picking but I suck at finger picking ;)

Most beautiful guitar I ever saw was a 60s Gibson ES 355, cherry wood with lovely grain and all this gold hardware.  Never saw another guitar like it.  I'm partial to the 60s Rick 660s like the Byrds and Tom Petty played, like the twang.
