Subject: Et tu, Sammy?
Sosa ejected after corked bat discovered...
:( :-/
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
AAAUUUUGGHHH!!! I always liked him! I rooted for him in the homerun race!
How long was he cheating?
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
I saw on the news this AM that Sammy said he accidentally picked up a practice bat. But they have taken all of his bats for investigation. I haven't heard anything further about it.
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
I seriously don't buy that he "accidentally picked up the practice bat". Gimme a break. ::)
I beleive that about as much as I beleive Wynona Ryder was "practicing for a role" when she decided to walk out of the store with tons of merchandise.
Hopefully for his sake, this won't stick long, but I have a feeling it will for a while at least.
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
Sammy's bats are clean
But now what? :-/
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
Sorry dag...I know how much you love this guy. I can't say I'm upset...I've never been a Sammy fan...there was always something about him that rubbed me the wrong way...he is a great baseball player regardless of the corked bat. But now one has to wonder how great...
Another black mark on the MLB :(

hmmm..."Corked_Bat" what a VERY original name you got there. How did you come up with THAT one?
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
They don't call him "Sammy So-so" for nothing ;)

How did you know I love Sammy? ;)
Personally, I believe him. I know I am biased, but I don't think he cheated. First of all his demeanor. He was very humble and admitted to making a mistake. Most people that cheat are very defensive when caught, he wasn't. Also, he only blamed himself, didn't point fingers. I know this doesn't say cheat or not, but it did say something about his character. I love Sammy and he didn't cheat.

Ain't there got to be a parody in there somewhere...
Now I've been around, but I ain't never seen
This guy who's in the all-time rankings at #17
Sosa, S-O-S-A Sosa,
So-so-so-so-Sosa
But when his bat split, then he had to walk
'Cause the referee spotted the cork
Of Sosa, S-O-S-A Sosa,

Maybe if I had a British "twang" I could false rhyme it, but alas, I am but a piggish American ;D
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
So how do you say "Cork", then?

Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
They rhyme as far as I'm concerned. And a Swedish friend reckons they do.
Britain and American two nations divided by a common language
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
I guess if you are from New England "cork" & "walk" could very well rhyme ::) ???
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
It's really a sad state of affairs when someone that's hit more than 500 home runs has to go out and use a corked bat. I guess this is why I pay less and less attention to the sporting world.

Cheating is rampant in the sporting world, but as my friend liked to say, "It ain't cheating unless you get caught" i.e. Miradonna's "Hand of God" goal ;)
But now that he's caught, even after all his bats checked out, Sammy's going to have a tough time maintaining his reputation :-/
His little steroid tiff with the Sports Illustrated reporter earlier this year didn't help things either ::)
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
After ALL 70-some of his bats were x-rayed, none were found to be corked, and from what I saw when the guy embraced Mark McGuire he is a true good sport, so I believe him when he said he grabbed the wrong bat.
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
Sammy's prepared to be disciplined
At least he's owning up to it, mistake or not.
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
"Sosa is by no means off the hook. Other players who've used corked bats have been suspended for up to 10 games, and Alderson said he thinks precedent will play a part in Watson's decision."
I would have to say that motivation should also be a factor. If the guy made an honest mistake, he was already punished. He got kicked out of the game, and more so, his rep is on the line. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. All his other bats were clean.
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
Anyway ::)
I think that he is doing the right thing. And I guess we will never know if he meant to do it or not. But that's okay, as long as he's being a good sport about it. :)
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
Personally, I don't think the whole incident is a big deal. A corked bat can't add much more of an advantage to a batter than an uncorked bat, and uncorked bats are more likely to break as it is.
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
To cork or not to cork? That is the question. For the record I don't think it was a purposeful thing. But what do I know? :-/

IMO, he's a very nice guy who learned a lesson the hard way...ALWAYS check your bats to make sure you've got your own!
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
I thought this on the way home yesterday: what advantage does a corked bat give, anyway? Is it just because it's lighter... but then weighing the thing would be easier than X-Raying it.
Given that the rest of his bats showed up clean, maybe it was a simple cork-up
;-)

What is really sad, Don, is that I think we are in the minority in believing Sammy. Pretty jaded world we live in.

Hey dagwood....I LOVE Sammy! I just think he should've checked the bat....everyone's entitled to make a mistaqke here and there though ;)

Sammy suspended 8 games
:-/
A just punishment. He plans to appeal, but I believe he's ready to get what he deserves.

Yes, he should have checked the bat. It's just that I have heard lots of people screaming that he did it on purpose. Not my Sammy, I say. :)

For what it is worth Dagwood I agree with you. I don't think it was a purposeful thing. I just wish there was a way to prove it. :(

Unfortunately there isn't. :-/
Oh well, this is baseball, after all. Soon someone else will do something stupid and take the spotlight off of Sammy.
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
Well, after watching several reports and hearing the conclusions of the x-rays and all that, I had a total change of opinion on the Sammy issue from the one I had 2 days ago.
I admit it, I jumped to specualtive conclusions. I guess I tend to agree now that it could have been an accident, and a 1-time thing.
Rock on Sammy. ;)
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
I don't think for a minute that he is innocent he is a professional and he needs to know every time he is at bat that he has a job to do it would be like a carpenter grabbing a saw to pound a nail it just does not happen accidentally you need to keep focused to do your job and I believe he would not lose focus like that he knew what bat he had he is too good not to know

I agree the recent event is somewhat damning on Sammy's behalf, but before you crucify him, provide some proof.
I know I was one of the many that was condemning him at first, but I think everyond deserves a fair trial before being crucified.
Subject: Re: Et tu, Sammy?
I was bought up to believe in giving someone the benefit of the doubt. There will be some day when each one of us could be involved in some incident and have some lame excuse for it. (truth or not)
