Subject: ISP Help

I would like to switch from AOL Plus (AOL's DSL) to a less expensive ISP in the NYC area. Right now, the whole deal with AOL Plus is almost $60.00 per month because you pay AOL and you pay Verizon for the connection. We canot use a dial up service because our phone wires are old and bad.We have AOL but Verizon DSL. (By the way, 9/11, neither AOL or Verizon would refund us for the four days our service was out - I felt Verizon should have because it was their boxes that were located at the WTC).

The whole thing about using AOL to access the internet but having another ISP at the same time confuses me.

OptimumOnLine says they don't have the service in my area.Yet when I sent my info, they said a salesperson would contact me about setting up service for me ??????

Yahoo doesn't have DSL-just a speeded up dial-up connection.

Verizon - that's my only hope. But what does Verizon charge as there "set-up" fee ? (I understand they do not let you install it yourself).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey there!  I live in the DC Metro Area, and I used to have Verizon DSL & I hated it.  Not only was I getting booted all the time and losing my connection, but the customer service was terrible.  I finally switched to Comcast (which is my Digital Cable provider) and I am very happy with it.  I don't know if Comcast is in your area, but you may want to try going with you local Cable company instead.  Just a suggestion!  Hope you get it worked out.  :)

Hi There! as PoP said you might want to look into Cable. I have Roadrunner (now Brighthouse networks) and in most placesl they offer $10 off if you are a student! our cable bill comes to $68/month that is with no premium channels but has the extended package ( Sci-Fi, Oxygen, History, WE etc.) and Roadrunner. I must say that I have tried Verizon DSL (month trial) and was not pleased, my connection to most of my fav. websites were lagged when compared to roadrunner.
So you  might want to look into cable either that or have a dedicated line (from the junction box) put into your house just to the computer modem. so that you can use dial up

We were looking into an alternative to AOL several months back. There is a website (I can't remember what it was-you may want to google ISP to get it) that will tell you all that is available in your area-what each server offers, how much etc. Once you know what is available, you can make a better decision. Good luck.

I don't use or have cable TV. I think Time Warner Cable is in this area and they have a sorta bad rep with their DSL here. Does one HAVE to take the cable TV in order to have the DSL. We don't need cable TV.Also, I am looking for a LESS EXPENSIVE one than I already have.AOL Plus works great but I am looking to cut back. Thanks .:)

You have the 2 mixed up hon, Cable has a cable modem, not DSL. A DSL modem is for telephone hookup only (that I know of it has been a while since I looked into these). I have been very pleased with Time Warner/Brighthouse so far. The quality of service varies per area since alot of the ISPs rent the lines of the local CaTV as well as the phone company and are subjected to those restrictions and traffic.

Yes, you can have cable modem without cable TV. They will install a filter to stop the incoming channels so that your Cable ready TVs cannot recieve the older analog signal. I know in some areas they charge an additional $10 if you do not have CaTV for what they call a "lifeline". This depends on the area as well, since certain parts of Florida, do not need to pay this even though they do not subscribe to any form of CaTV.

For me as a student the cost without CaTV would be $45/month $45 base an additional $10 for the lifeline and -$10 for being a student.

Here is a website that I found like the one CatV mentioned with the lists of the states and the ISPs that are offered in those areas, so you can do a price comparison.

I hope that helps!   :D
