Subject: Not really sure if this is the right board

Written By: karen (Guest) on 05/17/03 at 03:57 p.m.

I am logging on from home at the moment where I use AOL.  (I know!).  Anyway I have a question that maybe someone here can answer.  I always get loads of junk mail to my AOL e-mail account. I just delete them all without reading.  Usually they're for Viagra and stuff.

Just recently I've noticed loads about septic tanks.  Here in the U.K. they're not that common.  How many people here have a septic tank?  Are they really that common in other countries?

As far as I know, they are only used in rural and suburban areas.  I don't know about countries other than the US, so I will not hazzard a guess.

Those of us in the city have sewer connections.

My aunt used to have one, and they are a screaming pain to maintain.  Every few years, they would have to have it dug up, and something done to it.  I'm not sure what, as I was too young at the time to be very much interested.

When she moved to Florida, she insisted on being close enough to a city that she would not have a septic tank.  "Never again, not while there is breath in my body, not while I have a choice", were the words she chose.

I used to live up on a mountain and had one. Now, I am in the center of town so I have town sewer. Septic tanks are needed when you are out in the boonies away from sewer lines.

BTW, at the bottom of those annoying ads is a link that you can go to to unsubscribe and get your name off of their mailing lists. That should cut down on the spam you get.

And you know what they do then Cat? They do erase your name from thier list but then they give your address to 10 other partnered companies!  :P However I think on some websites that you feel are trustworthy (i.e. big companies) you can request your name to be removed without fear of it being sold to someone else.

Sometimes not responding at all can be better than asking your name to be removed.

I have found the best way to keep down Email is to do all your web verification and shopping from a hotmail account or similar, leave your main account just for friends and family.

In Australia basically every house had a septic tank.  But in the last 15 years they have stopped allowing them to be constructed during building of new homes.

When I bought my house 10 years ago I was given a time limit to convert from septic to sewerage within 12 months of purchase.  Anyone who buys an older house in Perth gets the same proviso - eventually they will all be eliminated.

I have to say - getting rid of it really cut down on my local cockroach population !!!!!!!!!!!!

What everyone else has said is correct, septic tanks are very common in rural areas.  Where I live, there are some houses that have been there awhile, while other new ones are being built around them, but they are still on septic as it costs quite a bit (around here, at least) to have it switched over to the new sewer systems.  My best friend lives in a subdivision where it is ALL septic and it is a pain.  She can't even have a garbage disposal because of it.  Plus, sometimes you have to have it "drained" if it gets full, which is downright nasty!!!

SPAM - aaarrrgghhhh! I hate it, hate it, hate it   >:(  >:(

And karen, I'm getting that septic tank spam too!

Just goes to show how random and irritating spam is as a marketing tool. Do you know ANYBODY
who has made a purchase based on receiving a SPAM email!?

Thanks for solving that little mystery.  I guess its easy to forget that in bigger countries 'rural' really does mean that.

As for being careful where I register my e-mail address to cut down on spam I have never told any company of my AOL account!  I only use AOL from home occasionally so read my work e-mail most of all.  That is the address I give out if I want people to get in touch.

Karen, have you ever plugged in your AOL address on any website?  Like if you've ever bought anything online or registered ror a newsletter or at a messageboard?

A lot of sites that say they will not give out your e-mail address are not totally secure.  They may not be sharing your addy, but there are "bots" that will harvest your address from the web.

I keep a Yahoo address just for that purpose.  All my SPAM goes there.  Only close friends and family get my "real" address.

It could also be poor security on AOL's part too.
