Complete waste of time? Would you buy one?

Movie rentals without late fines sounds good to me.

How dumb is that? I think you just throw them away. Complete waste of plastic.

I can understand why Disney would want to market these. The rental chains would have to buy thousands of them! Instead of five or six copies of each one, they would need to buy hundreds and hundreds of copies at a time! The problem I can foresee is that most video rental stores store the DVDs themselves away, separate from their covers. So I can see rental store clerks taking the DVDs out of the packaging and storing them in a drawer behind the counter. By the time the title gets rented, the disc has become unplayable and the store gets a bunch of angry customers.

The way it looks to me is a means of stores not kitted up for rental being able to shift product at rental prices: the likes of Blockbuster and the rest should feel threatenend by this sort of technology, as it means that your local newsagent or (more likely) supermarket will have these on the shelves at the same cost (or cheaper) as renting the thing.
I just hope the plastic is recyclable.

I don't think it'll fly. I have a friend who works as a manager at a Blockbuster. She says they make a good portion of their "profit" off of late fees. As far as buying one for my home, my kids watch the same movies over and over again, so it wouldn't be worth it. Besides, unless you are one who has to buy the DVD the minute it comes out, which I'm not, you can usually find them pretty cheap. I just don't see that it's worth it. ::)

that is true. Blockbuster, in my opinion, is the most overpriced/overrated video rental chain in the country. Not too mention all those annoying receipts they stuff in your tape/dvd box! >:( Talk about a total waste of paper.
But regarding the self-destructing DVD's, I can see the good and bad potentials.
Good: no late fees, no returning vidoes anymore, no annoyance caused by renting a DVD only to find it has been scratched and will no longer play when you get it home, etc.
Bad: Disney will no doubt monopolize the market for these things and all stores will have to buy tons of them(as said earlier by another poster).

Since the DVD's can be recorded, I think that there will be a demand for them. That would depend on how much they cost, of course. If they price them just a bit above regular rental fees I would go out a buy a DVD recorder right now.

I agree! I REFUSE to buy or rent anything from Blockbuster. A couple of years ago, I had a $4 late fee that I didn't know about & those jackasses sent me to collections for over FOUR dollars! Which then turned into over $100 for whatever court fees & late fees they tacked on! The worst part about it was, when I finally found out about this, it wasn't through the mail or any other correspondence from Blockbuster.....I found out when I went to lease a car & it was on my credit report. >:(
Now, about these CD's....if they destruct in 48 hours, that would make no sense. See, I rent all my movies from "Hollywood Video" and they let you keep movies for 5 days (for a cheaper price than Blockbuster too!:D). So how would that work? I don't get it ::)

I agree. Heck, it's getting so it costs nearly as much to rent a movie as it does to go to the theatre and see it now. I figure, why bother renting? When a new movie comes out on DVD, the price typically ranges from $15 to $19 dollars. So, for a little more than they want to charge to either rent, OR buy these self-destructing DVD's, I can own my own copy, watch it as many times as I like, even years down the road, and NEVER pay a late fee.
Seems like a no-brainer to me...
