Subject: Galaxy Express 999

Written By: Fred on 04/25/03 at 06:16 p.m.

Does anyone remember Galaxy Express 999? It was a great show, and it used to be my favorite. Until it got cancelled. Does it still play, I wonder?

A Canadian channel used to air it a few years back, but the morons cancelled it; and all of their anime.   >:(

Anything will be greatly appreciated.

I haven't seen it on tv in almost a million years!

(Ok, yes.. I am exaggerating.)

I do remember it, and I have one of the movies on video.

I'm starting to look for them on DVD, since I'll be getting a player soon.

I also remember one of the other anime's from the Leiji-verse:

Space Pirate Captain Harlock.

TB, you know a lot about this...can you help?

Space Pirate Captain Harlock....hmmm.

I can't say that I remember it. But then again I haven't seen any anime in awhile.
Try looking around the web for some info.

But there's hardly anything that I can find on GG99.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock has been released on DVD in English and Subtitled versions. I only found out about it when I was at Circuit City!! I was, like, "No way :D ! I am soooo getting this when the school year ends."

Ginga Tetsudoo 999 (Galaxy Express 999). Hmmm. I used to watch that series eons ago! The films have been released here and were even featured at art-house theatres around the country. The comic book series has been translated twice. Once by a Japanese-English comic/magazine for students of the Japanese language (remember Magajin? Haha. I must have been the only one buying it in my area!). Viz Comics now has exclusive rights to translate it. I think the series will eventually land over these shores (if it has not already... I haven't checked any new releases for a looooong time!). It's a good story. I rather like the films more than the series itself.

Queen Emeraldas/Millennia is another good one.

There's a couple of Leiji Matsumoto's stuff which never made it to translation (and seem less likely to make it over here) including Endless Road SSX and a few short-stories featuring characters from the Harlock Saga in war settings.

As for me, I am still waiting for Cobra Space Adventure (I won't hold my breath though...). All in the same villain-hero/space pirate trend. Weird and cool stuff :)

Hey remember the music videos that Leiji Matsumoto directed for 4 of the 9 songs on Daft Punk's last album?

Apparently at the Cannes film festival they are going to show a special project that they did together. Hopefully it's the long-awaited music videos for the last 5 songs...

Has anyone seen Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away? Talk about an epic film... WOW  :o I just wish we had an animation co in the US that could rival Japan's but I guess its not cost effective here in the US. I know Disney is good but still are on some levels below Miyazaki's works. At least Disney picked up the US distribution rights  ;D

I think I've seen Spirited Away about 15 times, including about 8 times on my Japanese DVD  ;D

Still undecided which version I'll buy to get the English dub (USA DVD or Australian DVD)...

Wow. You liked the film that much? I didn't like it as much as I think I should have. Maybe with repeated viewings it will grow on me (which was the case with Wings Of Honneamise!).

As far as Miyazaki goes I really liked Umi Ga Kikoeru (If You Listen Closely), Lupin the Third series, and Heidi Of The Alps... only Lupin has made it over to these shores :(

Seven of those times was basically because I promised nausicaa.net that I would write the synopsis for them to put on-line. It took me a lot of re-winding to catch everything.

Definitely for some people it *does* grow on you with repeated viewing.

"Umi" is being released on DVD in Japan in July, I think. *wanders over to CDJapan*...

Hayao Miyazaki is also the director of Princess Mononuke right?

Yes indeed!

Also of the just-released-on-DVD-in-the-USA "Castle In The Sky" and "Kiki's Delivery Service".

His "My Neighbour Totoro" is also out on DVD in the USA from FOX (although the DVD release itself is rather bland - wait for Disney to pick up the rights next year and re-release it with more goodies - it's one of the greatest kid's films ever).

I remember buying the Streamline releases! Funny how the one company who re-introduced anime in the west turned out to be the least successful of them all.

Actually mrgazpacho, the Disney DVD includes the full Japanese version including how they did on getting everything done on time, to each of them making dinner the nights when the deadline was due. I am very glad that Disney now recognizes how important it is to keep the film original.

TB, MrGazpacho, (Or anyone that has a good suggestion) you guys seems to watch alot of anime, what companies do you think does the best translations over all? (ADV, Manga,Pioneer, Vis, AnimeWorks, US-Manga or AnimEigo?) Or do you only buy the non dubbed versions-I know a couple of Anime enthusiasts that ONLY buy non dubbed versions, they claim it looses alot in the translation. I know that some things dont translate well when it comes to matching voice overs (as seen with alot of streamline pictures early releases in comparison to the subtitled versions. This was normal due to the budget they had, but at least we got the gist of the films.)

I am late in coming to making an anime collection but have started with the basics, Akira, Ghost in the shell, Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, Kite, Perfect Blue, Princess Mononoke, Fist of the North star, and Spirited Away. I am mainly looking for movies since I find that some OAVs (totally different from series based-one diviated from the other) tend to be a waste of time and many series when put on DVD only have 1-2 episodes per (what a waste of DVD space!) and the price is still high! However Divx and WinMX are helping me there, I have started on my Sorcerer hunters, Golden boy, Dragon ball, Robotech and Love Hina series.

Some of the new stuff I have seen on adult swim that I am interested in is .hack/sign (I play EverQuest what do you expect? :P ) Pilot Candidate, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Rurouni Kenshin.

Any more suggestions to check out in any form of OAV, Series, and Movies to checkout/rent would be appreciated.

*Note that I am burned out on Mecha for the most part. (Gundam for one) but for some reason like Pilot Candidate. I loved Star Blazers and Robotech as a kid.

I bought the Japanese version of Spirited Away about a year ago so the English dub wasn't really available at the time...

I don't really watch *that* much anime, so I can't comment on dub quality comparisons. All I know is the early stuff (e.g. Appleseed) had humunguous liberties taken, such as the well-known British practice of "fifteening" - adding gratuitous swearing to get a stricter film rating in order to appeal to an older audience  ::)

It is rumoured Samurai Pizza Cats was dubbed without *any* reference to the original script at all (i.e. totally made up  :P ).

I mainly watch movies myself - so recommendations ahoy!  ;D

Any (and every!) movie from Studio Ghibli is worth getting.
I've only seen the Oh! My Goddess movie, but it's nice. The OAV (only about 5 eps) should be just as good.
Tarzan Boy mentioned it, but Wings Of Honneamise is good. It's the first project from the same production team (GAINAX) that did Evangelion and Ghost In The Shell. Their 6-part OAV Gunbuster is a seminal bit of space opera, with one of the most famous endings ever.
The Patlabor movies are good. They had heavy involvement from OSHII Mamoru, who directed the Ghost In The Shell movie. He also developed the movie Jin-Roh: the Wolf Brigade.
Night On The Galactic Railroad is a tale of two young boys in this life and the next, based on a story by MIYAZAWA Kenji, a poet and philosopher.
For sheer inanity, you can't go past All-Purpose Cultural Cat-Girl Nuku-Nuku. The story of a custody battle between a weird scientist, his wife and her crazed office-lady assistants, their son and his protective cyborg girl with the brain of their cat...

OK, enough for now :)

I was strictly a non-dubbing type. I only made exceptions with big studios like Disney or if it was done for television. Otherwise I would never pay for a English dub. AnimEigo is the best company if you want a word-for-word translation of what is going on. They stick the to the original as much as they can; sometimes they have to double or triple subtitle stuff and insert liner-notes about the translation! That's pretty crazy, so you can tell this is done by people who are true fanatics. Pioneer stuff is pretty good and so is Bandai. Viz has some godawful dubbing and I won't even begin to comment on Manga Video. ADV has some crappy subtitling to the point where whole entire dialogues and songs do not match the original at all - and I don't even speak Japanese (that's how bad the translations are!).

Personal faves:

Feature Films-

The Wings Of Honneamise
Akira
Memories
PatLabor
Beautiful Dreamer
Ghost In The Shell
Ninja Scroll

OAVs-

GunBuster :P
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 :P
Macross Plus
Vampire Miyu
Mermaid's Scar
Cowboy BeBop
Outlaw Star
New Cutey Honey :P

TV Series-

Candy Candy
Captain Harlock
Cobra Space Adventure
DNA2
Urusei Yatsura

It's eye-catching. I don't know what else to state. I used to watch a lot of it years ago, but once in a while I also tune in to Adult Swim. My little brother watches it too, so that's cool.

When I finally become independantly wealthy, (by whatever means) I am going to print out this thread and take it with me to the anime/manga store I just discovered in town.

Lots of great reccommendations from people whose opinions I trust.

And also because of the big sign in the store that said:  "Don't see what you are looking for?  Tell us...we WILL get it."

Thanks for the info TB, MrGazpacho! I do have Wings Of Honneamise on tape, dubbed, but I still can see how good it is! I hope the Japanese never drop thier quality products, I look at our stuff, the Simpsons, South Park, Samari Jack and I am quite dissapointed in what we have done. You take a look at the Japanese weekly series stuff and there is a big difference. I know that the design of series like southpark make it funny and is a signiture of the series, but it seems to me the new stuff is just getting less and less. :-/

Oh no, I am into films and animation in general. I can watch something like Kimagure Orange Road as well as Spongebob Squarepants and be equally entertained. I think US animation and production companies have a different take on animation. Even after years of watching the Japanese industry, they still aim animation towards children. Japanese society is more reserved, but their entertainment paints a whole different picture. In North America and other English-speaking countries, it is vice-versa; they are very liberal societies with restrictions on their entertainment (mainly when it comes to sex, but violence and language are edited for us as well, believe it or not!). I like both forms of entertainment (family-oriented and edgy stuff). They both serve their purpose to entertain yours truly.

I think South Park is high-larious! And so is The Inachu Ping-Pong Club! Dirty humour transcends all boundaries :D !

... back to Matsumoto... apparently it was CONFIRMED that the entire Daft Punk album had videos made, so this almost definitely *is* what will be screened at Cannes...  8)
