They just announced that the number of SARS related deaths in Toronto is now 18.

Health officials keep saying that there is nothing to fear, yet the numbers keep rising.

Health officials in Vancouver are advising us to NOT travel to Toronto unless is absolutely necessary.

This is scary sh!t!! Especially with Vancouver airport being the gateway to the pacific countries where this all started...

I knew it was Vancouvers falt.  That's it Jon, I'm closing the boarders. >:( ;)
Seattle has it hit pretty hard too, I'm not sweating it yet cause to many other ways to die right now, but if we got some good math people out there-
How long before it gets us all at the current rate it's spreading?

I saw where the world heatlh agency named Toronto as an "avoid unless necessary" location, yet the Toronto leaders are still claiming theres nothing wrong?  They even went as far to try to get the world health org. to remove them from the list.

That is so very irrisponsible and selfish from the leadership of Toronto.  In my opinion.

The problem is blatant with the death numbers to prove it, and it seems all the Toronto leadership is concerned about is potential loss of revunue from lack of tourism. :(

I dont worry about SARS too much. Think of it like this: 18 people out of 5 million, in Toronto died from SARS. More people die from cigarette smoke!

Although it is spreading quickly, I would say not to worry too much.

Why are people so worried about this? Doesn't it have something like a 4% fatality rate and a low communicability? If you want to worry about something, how about malaria? It still kills millions every year.

Still, I'm more afraid of drunk drivers.

personally, I'm not worried in the slightest about SARS. (now if I lived in China, then maybe)

But, like everything else, the media is making this out to be the next "plague".

In a few months it will be something we sould be worried about.   ::)

As am I. It's far more likely you'll die in a road smash than be killed by terrorists or some exotic disease; however, the death rate from SARS isn't 4% or even 10%. According to the figures quoted here, it's 16%! That's high! This may not be the next Black Death, but with a 16% mortality rate (and no cure!) it's something we should be concerned about.

Personally, I'm enjoying Jon Rappaport's tantrums about SARS at NoMoreFakeNews.

I actually can't find a couple of the articles I read the other day in which he asserted a certain lack of science, a reasonable assertion, in the SARS investigation: science by press conference. And there's also apparently a tale of an apartment complex, the Amoy Gardens.

Here's the thing, and I'm looking for a reference on it right now:

- Apparently, the "SARS" at Amoy Gardens was any number of diseases which could have been passed through the sewage pipes. So the story goes--and this is what I need a reference for (I might have to buy Rappaport's premium content)--the outbreak stopped as soon as the contaminated sewage pipes were shut down. In other words, no airborne contact, and only theories of direct contact and transferrence from inanimate objects, as well as cockroaches suffice to suggest SARS, whatever it is or isn't, as opposed to any number of diseases available in sewage that might more readily explain the diarrhea.

I'm going to pre-emptively blame the media. No, wait, I can't. Oh, wait. Yes I can.
