Subject: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Who's your fave team in the Eastern Conference? In the Western Conference? Who do you predict will take home the cherished mug?
My beloved Canucks got embarassed by St. Louis in game 1 but came back to tie the series in game 2. If they get through this series they can go all the way in the West. Their biggest competition is Dallas and if Turco gets off his game then they're all over them. Detroit has a chance but they're gonna have to play better than they have against Anaheim so far.
My other fave team, the Devils have a stranglehold on the Bruins in the East. I predict they will face Ottawa for the conference final unless an upset happens.
What say you, hockey fan?
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
I'm one those people that says goaltending wins Cups. Therefore I say that the Devils will reach the finals on the back of the best goalie in the game today, Martin Brodeur. At the beginning of the playoffs I said that it would be the Devils and the Avalanche in the finals, and even though Patrick Roy was left with his jock swinging from the rafters in game one, I stand by my prediction.
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
I'd like to see a Canadian team at least get to the Finals. I think Vancouver and Ottawa have the right stuff to make it all the way. Vancouver over Ottawa in seven games ;)

This would be fantastic for those of us in Canada!! LOL...I can see Mr. Bettman having a cow though.
Don Cherry predicted a Senators/Canucks final about a month ago but I think he's changed his tune a bit.
I also believe goaltending wins you cups and I could see a Devils/Avs final again. Only this time the Avs don't have Ray Borque so the Devils would feel just fine kicking they're butt!! Heheeee...sorry Detroit fans but I don't think Cujo has the right stuff...

Plus Jagr's a sellout (I'm still mad about that). So sad when the Penguins become nothing more than a farm team for the rest of the league :(

Unfortunately, my favorite team didnt make it (Kings). But if I had to make a prediction I would have to pick a Colorado vs. Ottawa final.

Holy Crap! Can you believe that Anaheim is up 3 games to 0 against Detroit? WOW!! Who'd a thunk it?
My Canucks just can't get past the stellar defense of the Blues. They're like a blanket on them. Very good defensive play. And the penalties...hooo boy...it's bad for both teams. I do question the officiating in the games I've seen so far. They're calling EVERYTHING in the Canucks/Blues yet are letting everything GO in the Devils/Bruins games I've seen.
The Devils can knock the Bruins out tonight. GO NEW JERSEY!
Rumours are flying around here that Mario is going to retire and Pittsburgh is gonna go through a major rebuild. And sorry about the Caps PoP...I agree with the comment about Jagr being a sell-out.

I would LOVE to see the "Dead Wings" get knocked out early...then I can give all my attention to the Colorado Avalanche :)

The officiating in the Oil/Stars series has been pretty bad as well. I hope the Devils send the Bruins packing tonight, being a Habs fan, I can't stand them. But not as much as I hate those whiny crybaby Toronto Maplelaughs.

I'll say Stars and Devils, but only because the Wings are all but out of it. They're only down 0-3 to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

With a name like STARStender I assumed you were a Marty Turco fan? Not wanting the Stars to take it? I think St. Louis could pull it off too. Osgood hasn't had much rubber thrown at him though in this series...and as much as I love Joe Sakic I really don't want the Avs to win it again...
Who said Maplelaughs? Heheeeee....I about peed!!!
edited to add that the Devils didn't do it tonight...Boston kicked them 5 - 1!!
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Word is that Shayne Corson has quit the Mapleleafs. So now the players have to deal with the media frenzy that this will cause, with this and all the injuries they have, the Flyers should be able to take them out, if they could score some goals and get some decent goaltending .

NJ Devils advance to round 2!!
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
I'm a die-hard Red Wings fan, even after their utterly embarrassing defeat in the first round . Go ahead and laugh - they deserve it this year. No one bothered to show up for the games, but their biggest mistake all year was picking up that overrated Joseph!
I don't care who wins now, as long as its not the Anaheim "Disney on Ice" ( which will never happen). And no, I'm not from Detroit, I'm from Chicago, home of the sh******t hockey team ever!
As for other teams: West: Colorado has a good chance if Roy learns to keep his fat a** in the crease and doesn't wander off to handle the puck (he gets burned too often, when will he learn?). St. Louis will not advance far because Osgood lets in too many shots made from any further than the tops of the circles. Shoot close to the blue line and he becomes a seive. Anaheim? Yeah, right. Dallas? Probably will be battered after the Edmonton series, so 50 - 50 chance.
East: New Jersey - still playing that boring yet effective trap defense, so chances are good (I hate having to admit that!). Philly/Toronto - whoever wins will be very battered after that series, but both strong teams - so maybe ( I still keep hoping someone will knock that a*****e Domi on his ass). Ottawa, nope, sorry, try again next year, like always. Washington/Tampa - doesn't matter who wins, the south east division is weaker than the rest. No Chance.
Prediction: New Jersey/ Colorado finals ( which I obviously WILL NOT watch). Winner - Jersey in 6.
Any one else have predictions?
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
IF Vancouver can get past St. Louis I predict a Vancouver/New Jersey final...if they can't then I predict Colorado/New Jersey. I will watch it. Not just because I'm a Devils fan as well but because hockey is hockey and I love the game!
What do you think the odds paid in Vegas for the Ducks to sweep the Dead Things? Heheeee...some folks probably made a killing! But will they go all the way? Nope. Not in my books.

Wow! What a game between Dallas and Anaheim!! 5th longest in Playoff history! At least it was a nice goal and not garbage that won it ;D
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Is Cechmanek that good or are the Senators just that bad? I thought they had the Flyers on the ropes even down 1-0 and they squandered all kinds of scoring chances.
Meanwhile, how about them Wild, eh? ;D
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
I find Cechmanek plays the same style as Dominik Hasek played. He just seems to throw himself in front of the puck as opposed to reacting to it. I don't think Cechmanek is consistent enough to win this series for Philly, all it takes is one goal to throw him off his game.
Those Wild seem to be conjuring up the ghosts of 1991. Who else but Jacques Lemaire would dare to use a two goalie system in the playoffs?
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
I'm all about the two-goalie system...different looks for different shifts :) I wish they'd translate it to football, but I guess they have to stay with one QB for some trick plays to work.

When stopping sideways put most of your weight on your inside skate. If your skates are sharp and they dig in you might stop too sharply and kiss the ice, if thats the case then practice with dull skates until you get the hang of it.

That makes sense...that's what I usually try to do, but for some reason my heels won't dig in.
I've had my hockey skates for 7 years and I've kept them in excellent shape for when I play, always sharp and rust-free. I never lose my edge but I just can't seem to dig in the right way, so instead of stopping and skirting up a lot of ice I slide sideways for about 10 feet (3 meters for you :D) and that just won't cut it :-/
Any other pointers, and other ways I can stop rather than the turn/sideways stopping technique? Thanks.

I disagree. I play hockey regularly and have since I was 7 (a LONG LONG time ago lol)...when I stop "sideways" as you put it, I put all my weight on my outside leg..or the leg that closest to the direction I'm heading and I put my weight squarely on the ball of my foot and drag my inside toe. I stop instantly and I'm already on the right leg to push off to head the opposite direction. Outside leg...watch the players on TV...that's why the snow flies up..if it was inside leg you would spray snow on your outside leg.
Ice skating is more about the ball of your foot than the heel. That's where you get your speed from...pushing with the ball of your foot. Think about running...taking off from a stand still you push with the ball of your foot...same with skating.
Just my thoughts on the subject :)

I meant to say outside, the inside is used for balance. I agree with not using the heel of the skate, you'll just end up making a sharp turn.
When I was a child I used to stop on just the inside foot, I would lift my outside foot completely off the ice. My coach put an end to that, but I still do it sometimes to this day, i'm just comfortable that way.

Yeah, I actually thought about that last night and I was like, "Hmmm, waitaminute..." But perhaps what I've been doing wrong is what you suggested, using my heel. Ever since my beloved Islanders lost to the Sens in round 1 I've been rooting for the Devils.
I love Brodeur. He is so under-rated and doesn't get the respect he deserves. I'm also a big Scott Stevens fan. There are few things more beautiful in hockey than an open-ice check initiated by number 4.
Someone said in an earlier post that goaltending wins the play-offs. I've got to expand that to add stingy defense. The Devs lost the season series to Ottawa, but I'm not worried. They seem to know how to take their game to the next level.
In the west, if someone had told me back in March that the Ducks would be in the conference finals, I wouldn't have believed them. They're riding some great goaltending. Jiggy has made some incredible saves. Plus, they have some great veterans in Oates and Thomas, and that always helps in the locker room.
I have no idea who's going to take the Canucks-Wild series, but I think the Canucks have the stronger team.
I'm hoping to see the Devils play the Canucks in the final. (which means all 3 NY teams will have played the Canucks in the Stanley Cup finals)
Ultimately, it doesn't matter to me who is in the finals, as long there's hockey to watch on TV.

Dude Jonman, I don't know how to tell you this...but massive CHOKE!
Canucks blow a 2-0 lead, and the Wild score 3 goals in the third to run away with it! 4-2 final. Dang. What a game 7.

Another sad chapter in Vancouver pro-sports. But who would've thought the Mighty Ducks and Wild, two expansion teams, would play for a berth in the Stanley Cup finals?!! :o
Now I am rooting for the Sens to win it all, but I belive the evils experience will carry them to the title.

I still can't believe we had a 3 - 1 series lead on Monday and here it is Thursday and our season is finished. What the f*** happened? There's gonna be some serious evaluations happening now. If I were Dan Cloutier I'd maybe pack a few things...just in case...

End Quote
Some of the saves he's made defy physical laws. I didn't realize someone could move that fast. I'd say it was because the Wild were inept, but seeing as they dispatched Colorado and Vancouver (in seven games, but still!), I'd say that it takes a special goalie to blank a team for two games and change.
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Yeah, make that three shutouts in a row. Giguere is officially invincible.
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Did you see the Devils get hosed on that goal last night? It was SO in!! I was jumping off my couch and then...nothing. Even the goal judge didn't see it! Wow!
I loved Colin Campbell's explanation..."That's one of the problems with the hurry-up face-off..." Dude, if you have 6 people in the replay booth and at least 6 different TV's don't you think you could look at more than ONE ANGLE AT A TIME??
They really blew that one...I can't believe they didn't see it until it was too late.
Still, the Devils didn't need the goal as Marty Brodeur was his usual amazing self! ;D
Can the Wild find a way through JSG tonight?

I hope not! As much as I would hate to see a name like "The Mighty Ducks" on the cup, I can't help but root for J.S Giguere.

This is the part where I throw my karma missile at Ottawa so they will stop SUCKING. :P
It'd be kind of sad for TV execs, but I'd love to see an Anaheim-Ottawa final ;) We'll see...we'll see. I think Giguere and Brodeur are just too darn good though, so any way, a return of the Cup to Cah-nah-dah may have to wait :-/
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Hey, they stopped sucking! :D
Now let's see what happens in Ottawa tonight in Game 7 8)
Subject: Re: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Well...'tis about that time to concede the Cup to the Devilish ones ::)
But quite a series, no? :) Very exciting, back and forth, never any true "momentum"...and the "Mighty Ducks of Anaheim" engraving shall remain off the cherished chalice for at least another season ;D

Yes, a very exciting series! Back and forth. It was heartbreaking to see Giguere crying after the game. I feel bad for the Ducks as they also deserved to win it.
However I'm VERY happy for my NEW JERSEY DEVILS, the 2003 Stanley Cup Champions!!

RANGERS IN 2004 ;D THE ONLY CONCLUSION I CAN COME TO OF WHY THE DEVILS BEEN SO GOOD FOR ALL THESE YEARS IS ONE REASON---BRODEUR (sorry about the CAPS)

I have to agree that Brodeur has been excellent, although not the ONLY reason...in '95 it was also Scott Stevens, Ken Daneyko, Bobby Holik and *gasp* CLOD Lemieux...then in 2000 it was Scott Stevens, Bobby Holik, Patrick Elias, Scott Gomez and *gasp* Alexander Mogilny...THIS year it was Scott Stevens, Patrick Elias, Scott Neidermeyer, Jason Gionta, Turner Stevenson and Jeff Friesen who helped Mr. Brodeur out to win the cup. The Devils also have won 3 cups with 3 different coaches so ya know that ain't what's doing it...
The Rangers? Serious? Come on...the highest payroll with ZERO production...what a joke to the league they have become...they are a prime example of why salary caps will work...the players that WANT to play WILL...without regard of money...the more they make the less production there is...and the NYR are the PERFECT example of that. Even hiring Scotty Bowman couldn't help them...and when the job WAS offered to him he said (and I quote) "I thought about it for about 12 seconds and decided no thank-you"...even Scotty knows the team doesn't gel...there's zero chemistry on that team. Sather used to be considered a hockey genius...now people are wondering if maybe he was just lucky to get the players he did in those Edmonton dynasty years...
Anyway, next season is only 13 weeks away!! Bring it on!!
;D ;D ;D ;D

Depends on who you ask. Some people prefer sports where men are getting their faces smashed into a hard surface with several penalties and broken teeth. I prefer football. ;D
